1 THE COMMUNITY CHURCH NEWS VOL. IV STOW, THE WILD WINDS O., F R I D A Y, O C T O B E R 1, 1937 BLOW Why can't I live my life in peace, live it in my own way, unmolested and unafraid, under my own vine and fig tree? Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, that is my desire. If we are correctly informed through the daily press of our country, we are told in the most vehement terms that Italy will defend her Fascist doctrine regardless. Italy's dictator has declared, so we read, that Italy shall be restored to her former glory, that her army and Navy shall dominate as in the olden days, and let no Nation interfere. Russia, through her spokesman, has said, according to the press, that Communism shall be defended and propogated regardless, backed by the largest army, the Reds of Russia. So let the world be warned. If I read correctly, the Emperor of Japan has declared he will drain his nation of blood and gold to stay the tide of Communism in China. Other powers have been as extravagant, as foolhardy as wild and insane, in mad bravado. Why should I, or anyone, be coerced? Why should anyone be compelled to have forced on them doctrine, distasteful and objectionable? Why can't I live my own life in my own way without being over-ridden and brow-beaten into the slavery of another regime? Let the good, the true and N O. 40 worth-while commend itself. Let humanity make choice unerringly because of the evidence of excellence. Why use any doctrine as a fish-bone to choke humanity to death? The Edison lamps have recommended themselves the world around because it is self-evident that they are more desirable than candles and the wick lamps. Herein I find a law in the material world or in any phase of human endeavor, wherever man can see something better than what he has he will try to possess it. This is true of clothes, food, or every comfort of life. The glory of Christianity is to display samples rather than impose systems. It's the life more than dictrine. Missionaries have retarded the advance of Christianity in pagan lands by being over-zealous, over-bearing and coercing the subjects. Nation a f t e r nation today are destroying the good they seek to advance by the vicious and inhuman spirit of war and destruction to whomsoever that subscribes not to their terrorism. It's the history of the race that even peace loving people cannot long exist without being hunted down by invaders or destroying hordes of brigands and plunderers. I ask, why one man or one nation should impose his doctrine on another when it is objectionable? Why can't I live my own life in peace, unmolested and u n a f r a i d? GEO. M. HULME Sunday Evening Topic:"Can the Church Save the World"

3 T H E C O M M U N I T Y C H U R C H. NEWIS a society of saved believers in Christ, who are striving to do His will. The will of Christ may be ascertained by the study of God's word and through prayer. Prayer meetings in the so-called modern church are not what they used to be, quite often there is no prayer meeting. However, thru the efforts of serious-minded, consecrated persons, the study of God's word and prayer in Stow is being revived. We know that eight ladies gathered on Tuesday afternoon of last week at the home of Mrs. Dunn for Bible Study and prayer. On Wednesday evening seventeen persons met under the leadership of Mr. Biggs for Bible Study, and on Friday evening ten more gathered in an inspiring Christian action group meeting at another home. These meetings will be repeated this week and we hope continue. If you would be a Son of God in Spirit and in T r u t h (see Bible School Lesson for Oct. 3) we recommend that you attend one OT more of these meetings which will be held in the same places except the Friday night Christian action group which meets this Friday, 7:30 p. m. at the home of Mrs. Murray, second house on Gorge P a r k Blvd., Stow. <D SUNDAY EVENING SERVICES After a rousing Song Service, Rev. Hulme spoke last Sunday evening on the subject, "Is Christianity Practical?" His text was SEND taken f r o m Christ's summary of the sermon on the Mount which is the parable of the two men who built respective houses one founded on a rock, and the other on the sand. The true christian was likened to the man who built his house on the rock foundation. He reminded us that the present day tendency was for the church to let down the bars and come down to the level of the world. For example, witness the bazaars, smokers, card parties and dances being held in many modern churches. As christians our business is to save the world and we can never save it by coming down to the world. The world must be lifted up spiritually. Many contend that this is not practical, but, Rev. Hulme says the way of the world is the way of destruction. In this world, War, Labor Strife, a n d a failing Social Order are three m a j o r divisions of sin and trouble. The present day methods of the world in dealing with these lead only to more war, more labor strife, and more social difficulties s u c h as divorce, drunkenness, etc., etc. Christian principles if applied to war would substitute the soft ansvver for the sword, "A soft answer turneth away wrath; but grevious words stir up anger," Prov If labor and capital would only remember and apply the golden rule "Thou shalt love thy neighbors as thyself," difficulties would be solved here that FLOWERS Whatever the occasion, your gift of flowers will be appreciated if they are from SILVER L A K E FLORISTS

4 12 THE COMMUNITY CHURCH. NEWIS 476 When in Stow Let us service your car while you shop Shell Gas Station "Eddie" Parsons 140 E. Kent Rd. Stow will never be solved in any other way, and if all parents were christians and would bring up their children to honor and respect them, i.e., to "honor and obey" sins of the social order would vanish. Nothing is more practical than the true christian way of doing things, and the world will always be sick until the way of Christ is applied. Such in brief is a summary of Rev. Hulme's sermon of last Sunday evening. H. J. S. <?> I WILL Every individual will do well to have some well-defined personal objectives at the beginning of this new church year. What do you imagine would happen if each member who has taken the sacrea vows of the church would make the following promises for himself: WA-2224 I will begin each day with a brief time of quiet-of meditation of silence, for Divine guidance the use of the day. I will spend more time in reading the Good Book, in order to familiarize myself with the inexhaustible treasures of the Scriptures. I will strive to create the religious atmosphere in the home because of the lasting contribution it will make to myself ancf children. I will not accept a single meal without first bowing my head and giving thanks to the Giver of all gifts. I will become a regular worshipper at the services of the church, developing the habit ot' church attendance. I will permit my particular ability to be developed and to be used in some service within arid without the church. KNIGHT SERVICE CO. However, we don't expect all of the State of Ohio for they won't know about it. BUT we do expect YOU. For it is 476 Rally Day to sell Chryslers. A card was received this past week from Mrs. J. F. Butcher, who with son Jimmie receive this paper, are spending the winter in San Rafael, California. They attend the Presbyterian Church there and write that they are well. Their address is Apt C St. There was no school this weeh on account of the new heating plant being installed in the basement of the High School Building. This week will be made up, most likely, by shortening the Christmas and Easter vacations. Apparently there are some disadvantages to living in Florida for Mrs. Helen Dibben, formerly of Stow but now of Edgewater, Florida, writes that they are having their rainy season and mosquitos now, but she expects the sun to shine soon. She also misses the fruit and vegetable canning season now on in Stow. Rev. Hulme will preach next Sunday evening in the Tabernacle on the subject "Can the Church save the World." The last two Sunday evening services have been held in the Church auditorium but stoves are being installed this week in the tabernacle and next Sunday's evening services will be held there. The new soft shoulders along the newly resurfaced Hudson Rd. have been the cause of at least two accidents recently. Last Wednesday evening, Mrs. Mabel Cowell of Darrowville demolished her car when the sand along the roadside threw her so as to side-swipe a truck and trailer she was attempting to pass. Mrs. Cowell suffered a bruised shoulder. Some hours later "Russ" Scholtz, West Arndale Rd. with seven in ^ar had practically the same sort of an accident, only, his car turning over sent five to the hospital, all more or

The Hoopers on their Estate seem to have ground most suitable for the growing of extra fine vegetables and flowers.
