VI STOW, O., F R I D A Y, S E P T E M B E R 15, 1939 THE COMMUNITY CHURCH AND THE PREACHER I like The Community Church in Stow, I am very fond of all her people, I have no quarrel with anyone. However, it's not all sunshine and flowers to be the Minister, it's one of the finer arts, a man should be wise as a serpent and harmless as a dove. So, now, good folks, far and near, be calm and quiet and I will tell you all about it. First I wish that gossipers were all dead, the world wouldn't miss them much. I haven't any personal complaint, therefore, if gossipers tuyn the heat on me it is all right, however, on general principles my vote is against gossip. It is unkind, unchristian, and unbecoming good people. Therefore, I hope this undesirable mongrel will be kept out of Stow. Next Knockers, fault finders, and grumblers are a troublesome breed. It's a great pity that such creatures infest the path of progress. I wish they were all transported. This type of animals are always against anything constructive, they.have no vision, and they always throw mud, dust, or put the brakes on any good project. This is bad enough, but in addition along come the critics. This gang will strain at a gnat and swallow a camel. Someone has been seen with a cigar or a pipe, or they have been to a picture show, or they don't pray. So they want everyone lined up and shot that don't shout or get religion in a great way. Constructive criticism is commendable, but N o. 37 hair splitters and contenders are a headache to a going church. Your Minister believes that salvation is found in Jesus name. Look to Christ and be saved, He is your hope of glory. Hold fast that precious name of Jesus, that, and that only, is the pass-word that admits through the door called Death into the glorious morning of everlasting life. Having been acquitted f r o m condemnation and now adopted into the family of God you are a free man, you have a glorious liberty, a boundless liberty, you are a child of the King. You are a mighty poor specimen of a christian if you whine, fuss, and complain. God's own h a v e outgrown those former things. Sin and worldliness are not alone with the thief, the liar and the drunkard. The same blight that damns them keeps you from the altar of worship, reminds you of your poverty, tells you that you cannot pay or pray, binds your hand and tongue, and denies you a part in the program of the church. Free yourselves, my people, it's the devil that deceives you. Again The wandered, undependable, chasers of fancies, anything that glitters, itching ears, there they go. Some after reincarnation, that sounds big, Yogi Philosophy, spiritualism. Come back to the Bible. Stop, listen to God. Breathe the name of Jesus and be at peace. Again Where are the reapers? Come work in the vineyard of the Lord. My people, have you no vision of the work before us,

Start to sing the chorus, "O Lord, send a revival, and let it begin in me." Last, but not least Woe be to the pikers, they who shirk, the lazy, the backsliders, the indifferent, the gang that persists in coining excuses. Verily, verily, I say unto you, you have your reward, all you may ever expect. Now, my friends, I will go all the way with everyone who loves my Lord, and will pay the price of building an altar of prayer, SIMPLICITY worship and praise to the living God in the land of Stow. GEO. M. HULME HOMECOMING COMMITTEE The ladies will be in charge of HSmecoming activities at Community Church this year. The committee consists of Mrs. Ralph Nichols, Mrs. Harry Osman and Mrs. C. V. Cross. These particular women should be able to prepare a good program. It will take place on Sunday, October 8 and we hope all former members and friends of Community Church will come back home on that date. $ FOOD FOR THOT What fools we are; spend twenty-five thousand dollars to kill one man, and another twenty-five thousand to take care of the wreckage from war. Nu-Way Cleaning and Pressing There is a Difference - INVISIBLE SHOE REBUILDING WA Front St. Cuyahoga Falls for this coming week to hold prayer meeting on Wednesday at 7:30 p. m. in the church auditorium. The orchestra through the courtesy of Mr. Maxwell will meet on Tuesday evening. That this change is made by the orchestra who have held this night for practice longer than any other organized group meeting week nights, speaks well for their generosity, tolerance, and kindness. Those who feel that they can pray, and study the Bible better without the aid of music should now see fit to attend this next Wednesday evening meeting. Rev. Hulme will lead the Bible Study. Since the size of a church's midweek prayer service is quite likely to be an index of the spiritual condition of that church it wouid be a fine thing if a large number would attend Wednesday evening. <S> DEATH Paul L. Hulme, youngest son of Rev. and Mrs. George M. Hulme, passed away on Monday of this week. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 9 the home of his parents. Our sympathy and prayers go out in behalf of our minister, his wife and the relatives, in this their hour of sorrow. NOTICE Rev." Gregory of the Stow Church of Christ will kindly occupy the pulpit of Community Church Sunday morning at 10:45 A. M. He takes the place of Rev. Hulme who lost his youngest son Paul, on Monday of this past week. We wish to thank Rev. Gregory for his thoughtfulness and kindness in relievingfjrev. Hulme this Sunday. Rev. Gregory will pleach as usual in his own church at 9:30 A. M. Dan Hughes, Welsh singer who has just arrived from Wales on the Queen Mary is expected to participate in the service. "TO GAMBLE" Webster says that to gamble is "to play or game for money or other stakes, or to. "lose or squander by gaming." Please note he says "for money or other stakes." "Other stakes" undoubtedly includes merchandise, bridge prizes, or bingo prizes. In a turn about the carnival lot late one evening last week it was not necessary to have someone call it to our attention that many of the enterprises were games of chance. Plain gambling there', we'd say. In one stand a wheel was located that might stop spinning most any placs. Pitching penn'es was another activity. Outstanding was a Bingo game, wh'ch we consider gambling whether conducted by Legion, Fire Department, Grange, Marine Club or Church, and whether the prize is MONEY or OTHER STAKES. When the write-up for the Carnival was made in the August 25th issue of this paper it was understood that there was to be no gambling. Most likely those in charge didn't take the trouble to look up the definition of the word "gamble" in Webster's Dictionary. Cr, it is jus.t possible our copy of Webster is out of date. Evidently many do not consider gambling a sin,,or, they try to soothe their conscience by the thought that "this is no sin." 'Ere long maybe a line or two will be \ written on tlie sin and evil of gambling as defined in Webster. Just this much now: We do know that to gamble is a sin and should not be engaged in by anyone who consider themselves Christian. $ CONSIDER THIS Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. One lady not far away was said to have purchased seven hundred pounds. Numerous would be purchasers asked for 500 pounds, one man wanted 1,000 pounds. Tuesday evening we paid Mr. Weldon of the Kent-Stow Market $1.35 for twenty-five pounds which he had just secured with considerable difficulty from the Wholesaler. The following day

WA-+823 STOW, OHIO I certain grocers in Stow propel were reported to have boosted the price to $8.00 per cwt., in cne instance reputedly selling as much as two hundred pounds to one customer. The top price was reached Friday, the Central Market asking $2.25 for twenty-five pounds. Saturday prices for twenty-five pounds were as follows: Kent-Stow Market, $1.65;: Central Market, $1.79; Stow Market, $1.79; Acme, $1.70; Stow 5c to $1.00 Store, $1.63, later $1.50; with a dollar purchase. The wholesale price on sugar was reported at $6.50 per cwt. Saturday. Most dealers purchase their sugar in small lots as needed. Some though are reported to have purchased a supply when sugar was cheap. One man, north e. considerable distance on Route 91 boasted purchasing five tons at $1.00 per 25 lbs., taking out a ton at a time from the wholesaler as needed. Chas. Furst the latter part of the week unable to secure sugar sold a five pound pail of honey for 55c. Prices this week are lower and should return to normal. Be wise!
