There were about twenty members present out of the 72 on the roll, and was noted that the few who have been talkng of runnng for legslatve honors at the conng electons were not amongst those pres ent. Tho fact of tho absense of theso caused a dscusson as to what to do wh thorn and resulted n a unan mous vote of tho meetng not to sup port any canddato for electon to any ollco, even f such canddato s runnng as a republcan, unless ho s an actve member and n good standng of tho club or of any other republ can club. :0; CUTS TREES DOWN ND GETS NNETY DYS Cashmuro rragona of Kapaa got n troublo over at Grove Farm on tho 14th. When brought up for tral on Saturday ho pleaded gulty and was gven 90 days n Jal, hs helpers each drew 30 days oach. Unfortunately t was not brought out at tho tral that Cashmuro had cut young trees down but moroly had taken frewood, otherwse a stff-o- r sentanco to f tho outrage would havo been gven hm. Cashmuro s ono of tho draftees and has a largo famly to support, so ho cred a great deal and mado much nose, but wh out nny aval. :o: HOW BOUT THE PROTESTS THT OUR GOVERNMENT MDE GNST THE Gormany has derermed to lodgo a protest wh Washngton on tho lynchng of Paul Praeger, n tho who met hs death at Collns-vlllo-, llnos, at tho hands of an enraged mob and from charges of whoso murder a number of defendants wero recently acquted by tho Jury whch hoard tho ovvldonco n tho caso. t s reported by tho Wolff bureau that tn complant to bo lodged wll bo aganst tho permtng of such excesses as led to the Praeger affar. Yamaguch of Llou was fned $10 and $1 costs for runnng hs car whout tallghts at Hanamaulu on tho nght of the 14th. CPT FELD BEUEftS RL The welcome news to tho young men and the unwelcome news to the plantatons has come ut last to Kaua. netween 400 and 000 men wll be called n ths our frst draft. Ths wll serously crpple the plantatons n labor as t s scarce now, that the natonal guard has been moblzed and as there aro about GOO men already under arms. "Wo aro glad to gve the young men a chance to slap tho Kaser" sad one of tho plantaton managers a few days ago, "they want to go and guess wo wll manage to pull through somehow". Wh between 1700 and 1800 men nducted nto federal servce through tho moblzaton of the natonal guard, and allowng for tho reecton of those who wll bo unable o pass the physcal examnaton, s estmated by Captan Goodng Feld, the draft head, that tho name of every class 1 fghtng man n Hawa wll havo to be called n order to furnsh tho quota of 433G persons requred for mlary, servce, July 1st. new angle on the draft developed through the fact that men n tho terrory who have reached the ago of 21 snce June 5th, 1917, and who aro placed n class 1 followng ther regstraton probably ths month, wll bo caled upon f necessary to help complete tho quota, provdng of courso, that they are regstered and classfed before tho frst of next month. Whle Captan Feld does not beleve that wll be necessary to call upon the now regstrants, he s preparng for any unforseen dffculty that may arse, and s plannng to add on to the present lst of fghtng men the class 1 men becomng avalable by the new regstraton. Not a German on ccount of Name When V.-h-. Zoller, who s a secton runner for tho McBrydo Sugar Co., read n the Star-Bullet- n of June, 12, that hs brother, W. N. Zoller, who s now n Porto llco, was lsted as an alen enemy, ho at onco proceeded to Sherff Uco to straghten out that statement. Sad ho, "wo were all born n Broughty Ferry, Scotland, whch s noar Dundee. My father was a German, but on gong to Scotland, o a Brtsh subect before marryng my mother." Ho produced a brth certfcate, and a passport from tho Brsh Mnster, Lord Salsbury, Btatlng that ho s a Brsh subect and sad that hs brother had tho same. Ths s smply a caso of whero a man has a Gorman nuno and tho authores must have thought that he was a German on ths account. Mr. Zoller has been a resdent of theso slands for nearly thrty years and was ono of orgnal Terroral Guards on Maul when tho slands woro declared to bo a republc. PERFUMED GS BOMBS FOR OUR MEN The Germans are perfumng tho varous gasses they scatter over the mercan posons,, Tho latest schemo s to mprognato tho gas shells wh tho perfume of apples, banauas, oranges and pneapples, n tho hope of lurng our men to spots whero tho deadly gasses lurk. Formerly tho varous gasses had a dstnctve odor whch was mmedately dstngushable. Tho mercan gas experts quckly detected tho German perfume trck, and regular fru smells lurkng n low places no longer attract tho mercan troops. :o: Manuel occa, who represents the Thco. H. Daves Co., s agan on Kaua, on ono of hs perodcal vss to the merchants. Manuel wears a perpetual smle and seems confdent that ho agan, as usual, wll land hs usual share of tho Kaua busness. t a conference of draft board offcals-n Captan Felds offce was expected that the quota each dstrct board wll bo requred to furnsh for tho draft would bo establshed. But n vew of the number of fghtng men tnlrnn hv f l r pnnrl mnlhnmnn. -- o, - was uucucu o uuur mu aporuu-men- t untl the commander at Fort rmstrong has furnshed the exact number of clasa 1 men accepted for servce n tho federal guard, and each bo-r- d has reported the number of men remanng n tho fghtng class. When theso two fgures are secured they wll be deducted from tho C252 fghtng men stll remanng on tho records. Ths wll reduce tho number by a farly largo fgure, whch makes t necessary that probably all of tho class 1 men wll be called up for physcal examnaton for the frst draft. ccordng to Captan Feld, may be necessary to draw on all dvsons n class 1. conservatve estmate of the number of men Oahu wll be called upon to furnsh s fxed at about 2,000, but may run hgher, n vew of the number of men taken by the guard, s mpossble now to estmate the number Hawa, Mau and Kaua wll bo called upon to turn-lh-. Robnson Boy Thrd n Draft One of the frst men to b called for tho draft from Kaua wll bo Sel-wy- n rtoblnson. Selwyn recently was placed n Class 1 after hs plea for deferred classfcaton had been turned down by unanmous voto of the dstrct draft board. He stands thrd n the lst accordng to tho drawng last fall. That he wll be one of tho frst to bo summoned was tho statement of a member of the draft board. Y. M. C.. Club Makes Resoluton Tho Y. M. C.. Club of Hanamaulu expresses s thanks publlcally to tho drectors of the Lhue Plantaton for tho nterest shown s employees n Ub communy, and for the publc socal hall aud park whch you havo provded for tho cntro communy. More than ths wo know that tho men taken from ths sland by tho moblzaton of tho natonal guard has made tho labor suaton very acute for all tho plantatons of Kaua. Therefore wo havo decded that eachlnan who s o stll n tho of "ths plantaton owes t aa a patrotc duty to hs country to holp tho plantaton n s food producng ndustry by workng every every day that s possble. Wo pledge ourselves as a Y. M. C.. club to hold for our deal tho plan of workng twenty-fv- e days each month, and lookng upon all who, contnue to work twenty days or less each month as slackers, (accdents or llness excepted.) We know that every thng wo do to help relevo tho shortage of labor not only helps tho plantaton, but also helps our great government n ths terrlblo struggle for democracy and most of all helps us by ncreasng tho Bzo of our pay envelopes. Wo challenge the laborers of the other plantatons to excell our efforts. (Sdg.) Ceasar ndrade, Pros. gablto Baclm, Ylco-pre- Wenceslao gbayanl, Sec. Vctor nco, rrreasurer. PRCE OF SUBSTTUTES SHOULD DE- CLNE ccordng to a warnng scut mllers and dealers through the Federal Food dmnstrators n all states, cornneal and oatmeal should be at least!0 per cent cheaper than wheat Hour, and con Hour and barley flour should be 10 per cent cheaper. The dmnstrators have also been advsed that the attempt of certan bakers to advance the uce of bread s not nstled by the prce of substutes. Car shortage and storm weather caused hgh prces last wnter, but now that there are lberal supples of Hour substutes, hgh prces must be explaned and ustfed to the state and local admnstrators. Every buyer s called upon to assst the local Food dmnstrator by reportng any attempt to overcharge for substutes. MOW MNY WLL SGN THS PLEDGE? There has been que an agaton, snce the Food dmnstrator, Herbert. Hoover, asked that all who could would go whout vyheat untl next harvest, n the slands for pledges on ths measure. There has been consderable talk here on Kaua by a great many of our people, that they would do ths, and now we are askng all who wll sgn the followng pledge to do so and to mal n to the edor of ths paper. Those who sgn the pledge wll be placed on the honor roll and ther names wll be publshed n the Garden sland from tme to tme so that the maory of the people n the slands may know that we are helpng conserve the wheat. There are no great hardshps n the sgnng of ths pledge, as only entals the gong whout of any wheat n any shape untl next harvest, and as there are plenty of substutes to be eaten n the place of wheat, we wll not mss very much. The pledge s as follows: "Be resolved that, a resdent of the sland of Kaua, do wsh to serve the nterest of my country, and our lles, and do volutarly pledge myself to consume no wheat products untl the next harvest or about Sepenbcr 1st, t) S. Xumc ddress. RE THESE HOTELS SLCKERS? Some tme ago when He Government asked those of us who could, to go whout wheat tll next harvest, several of the leadng hotels n sgned the pledge that they would serve no more wheat products. Now they have backed out, played ndan, as were, and gve for the reason, that ther guests are leavng because they can get no wheat. What knd of people are these guests? They do not labor hard enough to need the wheat! What knd of people are these who are runnng these hotels? We would say, that they are not very patrotc or tha they would tell ther guests who must have wheat, ( when they do not need to leave and go to some slacker hotel, and further that they should publsh the names of these guests so that all mght know who they were. person s ust as much a slacker who refuses to do whout wheat (when they do not need as s the man who refuses 1o help the government n any of s war ams, or to go to the front and tght. Ths can be done by substuton more easly than by any other method. We must make athletcs more nterestng than the cock fght or other gamblng games. We must make the nght school, club meetngs, and other socal actves more nterestng than exstng evls. nd then eventally we wll wn the fght for clean czenshp, Several of the Kaua plantatons are usng the surest methods of correctng the home lfe of ther laborers. They realze that the home nstnct beats n every breast and have provded com fortable homes wh good sanaton and surrounded by a garden plot. The laborer feels that as long as he s n the employ of the plantaton ths cozy cottage n whch he lves, surrounded by flowers and a vegetable garden s hs home, and that preservng s beauty and sanary condon depends upon hs personal work. How dfferent ths s from the camp where sev eral famles are assgned to one large house whch s devded nto compart ments for each famly, wh no garden, flowers or home lfe to themselves. The Young Mens Chrstan ssocaton has a real msson among these people. One of the most successful methods used n ganng ther frend shp and n furtherng the work promoted among them, s that of vsng each camp worked n regular ly, assocatng wh the men and mak ng few select frends upon whom we can rely for help n carryng on the work n that camp. club s organzed and made as near self governng as possble; the Y. M. C.. secretary actng as an advsor, and takng the lead n all the work of the club and s actves. Ths brngs to mnd two methods of Y. M. C.. work: The ssocaton has for s emblem the trangle representng sprual, mental and physcal development. n the early-yea- of the YMCs career, rs was thought that a secretary must be able to do the work of ten men, or he should not be permted to re man on s. payroll. Some person sym bolzed ths thought wh a drawng of a secretary carryng a huge tr angle on hs shoulders lke the an cent tlas. The trangle had ten dvergng lnes each outlnng one mans work. Experence soon tau ght them that they were wrong, for when ths type of secretary was call ed to another feld of servce, he lefl luhlnd htm a group of earnest people eager for ther own betterment, but unable to lead themselves or to dc any constructve work. They had not developed leadershp,, dependng upon anothers personaly wh the re su that the work suffered serous declne whle a new man was adapt ng hmself to the work. The new methods used now, may best be represented by the above plan reversed, wh the secretary s tng on top of the trangle drectng the work of ten men whle keepng hmself well employed; developng as many strong leaders as he can, each wh hs own personaly. The new plan makes possble a larger prog ram whch wll not collapse when the secretary leaves and some new man takes hs place. Ths s the plan that we are en deavorng to use on Kaua. We have defnately organzed clubs whch are vsed twce each week, gong one afternoon for athletcs and another evenng for the club meetng. We have a regular schedule so that each club knows that we are comng and wll be expectng us. We also hap pen around at rregular tmes to see f they are playng games when not expectng us. t present the Lhue work embraces eght clubs, wh an other to be added soon. Ths requr es that two clubs and one set of ath letcs be supervsed n one day durn part of the week. Sometme ago a group of Fplpno boys at the Lawal Pneapple Cannery whout the knowledge of Mr. Loom s or myself, organzed a thrvng Y M. Before long ho fame of ths club reached "sec retaral" ears and ths group was ncorporated nto the regular schedul- - Slnce that tme they have been used on several occasons and have donated all of the proceeds of ther work to the Red Cross socety. The boys of Lhue plantaton Camp wnessed one of these enter tanments, and set to work to out rval ther Lawa frends. The camp group have and stll are gvng nterestng entertanng performman- - cea n and near Lhue. The nght schools of the varous camps n and near Lhue have an en rollment slghtly less than one hund red. Ths work may be classed as of greater mportance than all the above by some people, and as an encouragng sgn. The boys are eager for school work and frequently the women attend the school regardless of the fact that the work s ntended for men. There are many more such happenngs as the above whch those supportng ths work should know, but tme and space do not perm. :o: The tol shpments of pork pro ducts for the frst twenty days of prl were 198,067,343 pounds, as compared wh 187,555,642 pounds for the frst twenty days of March.
