3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Not long ago Robert Louis Wilken, a distinguished professor of the University of Virginia specializing in the history of early Christianity, became a Catholic. His recent work The Spirit of Early Christian Thought, which won resounding praise, has a chapter on the first Christian poet, Prudentius (348 c. 410), a layman. Born in what today is Spain, Prudentius was educated as a lawyer before spending his working lifetime as an administrator for the Roman Empire. After retiring, he became a full-time poet, placing his considerable verbal talents at the service of his strong faith. It was the best he had to offer to God, and he offered it with humility and enthusiasm, explaining: I own no sanctity Nor gold to ease the pauper s wants and misery. Come what may, I will rejoice That feeble lips of mine Have sung Christ s praises. Prudentius wrote of many things, all of them expressive of his belief in the ways of Christ. Two of his most admired creations were extended compositions of prayers for each day s activities and of advice for the continuous struggle to live Christian virtue. One of his hymns is very appropriate to Christmas, our great feast of rejoicing that God has chosen to share and elevate human life. As Prudentius phrased it: Of wonders done and confirmed we sing. The world bears witness, The earth denies not what it saw God in person showing men his holy way. Because the Son of God has taken on human flesh, forever joining God s own life with ours, humanity can never be the same as it was before, because Now we are not what we were, But born to better things. He gives to me yet remains himself. By becoming what is ours God is not less, In giving us what is his He lifts us to heavenly gifts. Thank you if you can help! Msgr. David Hubba FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT, DECEMBER 22, SAD NEWS It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Reverend Monsignor William C. Hatcher. We were blessed to have had Msgr. Hatcher as a weekend assistant here at Saint Joseph since last July. We will miss his warm and friendly demeanor and excellent homilies. Born in Jersey City, Msgr. Hatcher was a graduate of Holy Family High School, Union City, and Seton Hall University where he received a bachelor of arts degree in classical languages. He attended Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington, NJ, where he earned a master of divinity degree in pastoral theology and was ordained a priest on May 29, He was assigned as a parochial vicar to St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Bayonne, NJ, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, Oakland, NJ. He later was appointed administrator at St. Lucy's Church, Jersey City, NJ, and pastor at St. Stephen Parish, Kearny, NJ, St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Bloomfield, NJ, and St. James the Apostle Parish, Springfield, NJ. A Funeral Mass was celebrated by Archbishop John J. Myers, on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013 at St. James the Apostle Church, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, in North Arlington, NJ. PARISH MISSION COMING IN MARCH Plans are in the works to hold a special Lenten Parish Mission here at Saint Joseph on March Our speaker will be Fr. Gary Caster. Fr. Caster, a priest of the Peoria Diocese currently serving as chaplain at Williams College in Massachusetts, has written several books including The Little Way of Lent, Lenten meditations inspired by St. Therese s approach to holiness, and has produced shows for EWTN. He is the author of a new book on our own patron saint, Joseph: The Man Who Raised Jesus. Fr. Caster will introduce us to the man who risked everything to care for Mary and her Son, safeguarding them from harm and cherishing them with a pure and true love. Joseph was a flesh-and-blood testimony of what it means to live according to the Father s will with one s mind and heart centered on Christ. Fr. Caster will help us understand, appreciate, and grow closer to Saint Joseph and to prepare ourselves for his feast day on March 19 and for the coming Easter season. 4 CORNERSTONE: A SPECIAL TIME AND PLACE As a long-time member of Saint Joseph s community I had heard a lot about Cornerstone throughout the years. I always said I wanted to participate but one year led to another, until finally last year I decided to attend. The weekend was filled with many pleasant surprises (none of which I ll mention here). I don t want to give too many secrets away. What I will tell you is that there were many special moments during the weekend. There were moments of friendship and support and of quiet meditation and reflection. Throughout the 26 hours, Cornerstone gave me the chance to escape the outside clutter and noise of everyday life and reflect on my own spiritual journey. There truly was a sense of peace in just being able to reflect quietly without interruptions or distractions. It gave me the chance to reenergize my relationship with God and feel more connected to Him. I found myself in a special time and place, where I could reaffirm my faith. The Cornerstone experience empowered me to grow in faith and be more reflective in my relationship with God. It has given me the courage to act on that faith and move forward with that faith. It has shown me what a faith based community can accomplish. Everyone will undoubtedly take a somewhat different Cornerstone experience away with them. It is my hope that you too will experience the wonders that Cornerstone has to offer. Deborah Smith Del Bove ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Since the first Wednesday of the month will be a holy day January 1, Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God adoration will take place on Wednesday, January 8. SUPPORT FOR PARENTS GRIEVING THE DEATH OF A CHILD The Office of Family Life Ministries of the Archdiocese of Newark sponsors three support groups for parents grieving the death of a child. Groups meet year round on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 pm (July and August at 7:00 pm) at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish Center, 60 Byrd Avenue, Bloomfield and on the third Monday of each month at St. Peter the Apostle Parish Center, 445 Fifth Avenue, River Edge. The Support Group for Fathers Who Have Lost a Child meets quarterly at Notre Dame Parish Center, 359 Central Avenue, North Caldwell. There is no preregistration for any of the groups and there is no fee. NEW HOPE PREGNANCY RESOURCE CENTER The excitement about the new center in Englewood continues. More volunteers are needed to keep up with the expanding workload. The Center works with women who are newly pregnant and shows them what a beautiful choice life is. The women work with New Hope mentors and staff to strengthen their ties with their babies, to their careers and to their spirituality. Join this rewarding alternative-to-abortion effort. All home health aides are certified by the NJ Board of Nursing. Care can be provided for anyone, of any age, who needs assistance from families caring for a chronically ill loved one, to new parents learning to care for a newborn, and those who simply need help as they age or become disabled. Services can be arranged for as little as a few hours a week or for up to 24 hours a day seven days a week. Billing is done weekly and major credit card payments are accepted. 6 MAKING BEAUTIFUL MUSIC AT SAINT JOSEPH! If you ve been blessed to be present at a 12:30 pm Sunday Mass at Saint Joseph Church, you have heard the wonderful music of Richard Leavy (center) Peter Greco (left) and Monroe Quinn (right). Dubbed by Peter as 12:30 RPM (for their coincidentally appropriate first initials), these three musicians have been enhancing our Sunday afternoon liturgies for more than a year. Rich Leavy began his career in music in second grade studying and competing in dance both jazz and tap. When at age 11, a professional musician noted, Kid, you ve got a lot of rhythm, Rich decided to give the drums a try as well. He formed his first band in seventh grade, Little Richie and the Rebels, and played all the school dances. By 16, his band The Fugitives was signed by Atlantic Records and given 300 hours of studio time. At nineteen, he decided to turn his hobby, recording, into a career and worked in that field for ten years. However, during that time he also continued to play night clubs and benefits. When he formed his third band, Music City Band, it went on to have 7 pieces and last 22 years. Rich, who moved at age ten from Leonia to Paramus where he still resides, supported his family (wife Charlanne and their three children) with a career in sales, but he never gave up his music and continued to play professionally. He loves the challenge of playing his particular instrument in church. You don t see many drummers in Catholic churches. His most difficult task, he says, is playing during the solemn moments of the Mass, such as at Communion time. How can I improve the music with my drums, but not change it; add something and make the music and the moment even more special? Folks who have heard Rich play agree he has succeeded at that very well. Peter Greco is a familiar face to the parishioners of Saint Joseph. He has been here since 1996, first working with our former music director of 45 years, Bill Ryan. Peter remembers Bill encouraging him and saying, Your goal should be to make the music better, more prayerful for everyone. When Bill became ill, Peter filled in for him at all the Masses. Peter is a self-taught musician who plays entirely by ear. His musical career began at age 3 when his Aunt SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ 6 Ruth let him play on her old Emenee organ. He started to learn the piano at age 5 or 6 while listening to his cousin Lisa as she practiced. At age 9, when he picked up a guitar his grandfather, a cabinetmaker, had made, he added that to the 13 instruments he now plays. (Peter fondly remembers the first piece he learned on the guitar the Israeli folk song Zum Gali Gali. ) Area residents who shopped at A&S Department Store in Paramus may remember Peter playing the piano there. He has also for many years played and sung at Macaluso s Restaurant in Hawthorne. In 2006, he began accompanying Domenick Panfile, a leader of song at Saint Joseph, at church concerts and other venues. He also sits in with The Michael J. Luipersbeck Jazz Group, singing and playing piano and guitar. Peter likes the quote often attributed to St. Augustine that he who sings, prays twice. He loves the feeling of church music, both traditional and folk. He sums it up when he points to the statue of the Madonna and child that stands behind the choir and says, I think playing the Lord s music makes the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus smile. Peter s music makes us smile too. Monroe Quinn, our parish Music Director, conducts both our adult and youth choirs as well. Monroe learned his first chords on the piano as a preschooler and played piano at nursing homes with his dad, a professional drummer. In 1982, when his brother Alan who was touring with the show Beatlemania, brought home a guitar, it was love at first sight. After high school, Monroe began to study seriously with guitar great Remo Palmieri, who along with his father and brother, became his biggest musical influences. Monroe met his wife Joy, a classically trained opera singer, while playing at The Fest for Beatles Fans. He has performed in Brazil, Canada and Jamaica and played with such artists as Mickey Dolenz, Billy Preston, Peter Noone (of Herman s Hermits) and Dion (and the Belmonts). He recently released his own CD of jazz music On Riverside Drive and has been published in the premier music magazine, Just Jazz Guitar. Monroe took the helm of our Music Ministry right before Advent three years ago. Since then one of the things he enjoys most is arranging for the choir. His arrangement of America, the Beautiful was recently performed by multiple choirs at the Thanksgiving Interfaith Prayer Service at St. Peter s in River Edge. Monroe is thrilled to be making a joyful noise unto the Lord with Peter and Rich and to enhance the worship experience for the people with added instrumentation.
