2 St. Patrick Church 235 Chapel Street Grass Valley, CA phone fax web Fr. Sylvester Kwiatkowski, Pastor Fr. Robert Brooks, Parochial Vicar (residence St. Canice Church) PASTOR S CORNER By Father Sylvester Kwiatkowski Our words and actions reflect what is in our heart. They have the potential to build or destroy life, human relationships, and communities. When we align our intentions with goodness, love, compassion, and forgiveness we can become what we intend. People will have a deeper understanding of our heart by our words and actions. We are encouraged to reflect on God s Word as the source and foundation of the moral life. We use the Ten Commandments as guidelines for living in right relationship with God and neighbor. We purify our heart s intentions with prayer and fasting. Life is good when our thoughts and actions reflect God s will. They want to express a heartfelt thank you for our hospitality and kindness during their visit. They were so impressed with how we function as a parish well-organized, dynamic and loving. They were amazed by the size and beauty of the places they visited. For me it was a very special time with them because it was my first time in my life that I could spend with them since 1980 when I left home for my studies and my ministry. Here is an opportunity to enrich your faith through St. Patrick s Church Bible Study of the Gospel of St. Luke. We will be using the commentary and study guide by biblical scholar Scott Hahn, journeying through St. Luke s artistic and spiritual masterpiece. This book gives us a clear and convincing witness to the greatness of Jesus Christ from the Annunciation to the Resurrection. We meet Wednesday s from 9:30 to 11:30, starting September 2, This will be our only study this year ending on May 4, For more information, contact Diane Damron or Wendy-Marie Teichert ST. PATRICK STEWARDSHIP Wow! That's all I can truly say! No, I don't think that is quite fair. THANK YOU! A huge thank you to all who attended our parish picnic this past Sunday at the most beautiful fairgrounds in California. It was standing room only at the Pine Tree theater stage complex. God blessed us with a beautiful day. Father Peter celebrated Mass along with Father Bob concelebrating, and Deacon Jim Shea was there to assist. Father Bob's homily was excellent. We are going to have to find out more about his series of talks for all to hear. The picnic and Mass was to be sort of a kickoff for the youth and their upcoming trip next year to Poland for World Youth Day and a chance to greet and meet Pope Francis with youth from all over the world. The fundraising for the event netted just a little over $1,200. THANK YOU ALL! The youth group performed exceptionally well, starting at the very beginning of the Mass with the commentator. It continued on when the choir performed the entrance hymn all the way to the end of Mass. All of the ministries at that Mass were organized and directed just before the celebration started. I think the only assistance they had was from some of the ushers helping to seat people. They were superb. So I had to ruin it! I forgot to mention a "thank you" to a group and also their awesome participation. The Mount St. Mary's crew--they did a wonderful job serving drinks and other treats during the picnic. The booth was overwhelmed with people in line for the entire event and yet they were able to keep all happy. Actually, they do that type of superior work throughout the year! You saw how the youth exhibited their talents at Mass. A vast majority of them were well taught, mentored, and loved at Mount St. Mary's Academy! The entire staff can be proud of what they are doing and have done for us. There is no "who-mility" needed. Good pride is good. We also know that they do not do it for the money or the recognition. Love is awesome! Thank you! Our parish is blessed with so many good people. A lady by the name of Katie O'Rourke has volunteered to help organize the potluck dinners and also the picnic. She stepped up and said it is time for someone younger to do all of this. She wants to do it and is looking forward to making it all happen you will be hearing more from her in the future. Thank you Katie! And she will need help! Lastly, one of our Knights who is always ready and willing to help, whether it be for potluck dinners, picnics, funerals, or just helping to serve Mass, is Spencer McClay. He has a hard time saying no. Most often, he not only is the first person there, but the last to leave. Thank you for all of the many hours serving our parish, especially this last parish picnic. Pondering thought: "God is so good!" --Pat Gerving MERCY ASSOCIATES. I ask that you grant me acceptance of your will. Catherine McAuley
5 RCIA ALUMNI GROUP STARTING St. Patrick and St. Canice will be starting an RCIA Alumni Group. We invite all those who have been received into the Church any time over the past several years to join us once a month to share faith journeys, ask questions, pray, and renew friendships bonded during the RCIA process. Sharing your knowledge, insights, struggles, and growth in your new faith is a vital way to grow in that faith. We will meet at St. Cecelia s Center every second Thursday at 6:30 p.m. beginning September 10. For more information, please call Rich Reader at PARISH BOOK CLUB GATHERING All parishioners are invited to a meeting of the St. Patrick and St. Canice Book Club on Tuesday, September 8, at 7 p.m. in the Angel s Nest. The Angel s Nest is located at the back of St. Patrick s Church and can be reached by walking along the outside right wall of the Church. The meeting will last about an hour and a half. We will be discussing Gray Matter by Dr. David I. Levy. The book is available on line or through your favorite book store. The discussion will be led by Michael Moreland. In addition to stimulating conversation, coffee, tea and cookies will be provided. Learn the Heart of God from the Word of God. Pope St. Gregory the Great WITH OUR CONDOLENCES The St. Patrick parish community extends our condolences to the family of Juventino Lopez who passed away on August 15 at the age of 62. CATHOLIC CULTURE Christ condemned the Pharisees by word and deed. He was merciful, kind and understanding to all sinners. He forgave sin and promised forgiveness to all who would repent of their past misdeeds. Not only that: for He left to His followers for all time His sacrament of mercy and forgiveness, by means of which they could have their sins forgiven by His minister, acting in His name. Should we ever forget all He has done for us and disobey in a serious way any of His commandments, let us remember that we are not excluded from His company as the sinners were excluded by the Pharisees: we have closed the door on ourselves but He has given us the key with which to reopen it. Let us never be so foolish as to fail to use that key. TRADITION Tradition is long human memory set, not in stone, but in human interaction. Without this active memory, the bonds of relationship and affection fray and fall apart. Communities dissolve as surely as neglected buildings do. After participating in events, celebrations, and even small rituals, we remark about how good it is to gather and remember. Today s readings remind us of foundations laid deeper than the human will to relate. Today we hear about God s will to relate to us to be our God as we are called to be God s own beloved people. Today in three readings and three ways we remember the covenant bonds that create us as a people and the obligation and responsibility that express the innermost attitude of soul. You are mine. I am yours. These are God s words that created a people as surely as Let there be light created the sun and moon and all the stars. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. REFLECTING ON GOD S WORD Is someone in your house going back to school? If so there are books and supplies to buy, schedules to plan, transportation to be arranged. There is the worry over new teachers and whether everything that was learned last year has been forgotten. But no matter. Most of the time the school year begins with a review. That s good because sometimes we understand things better the second or third time we learn them. With the scriptures this Sunday all of us are going back to school. The series of selections from the Gospel of Mark and the letter of James that we begin this week will teach us one more time what it means to be a disciple. Lucky for us, since most of us can only learn this lesson if we hear and apply it on a daily basis. Today s first reading also instructs us to hear and observe the commandments of the Lord... that [we] may live (Deuteronomy 4:1, 2). And the psalm reviews the basics: The one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord (15:1a). Virginia Stillwell Copyright 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. MINISTRY DAYS: SEPTEMBER 25 AND 26 Ministry Days is the largest gathering of ministers, catechists and Catholic school teachers in the Diocese of Sacramento. The event is an excellent opportunity to network with others who serve our parishes and schools. The theme this year is Gathered into One by the Holy Spirit and is taken from Eucharistic Prayer II. The work of the Church is a collaborative effort. We are called to be one body as we carry out the mission of Jesus together. As we try to renew our parishes and schools as centers of hospitality, centers of prayer, centers of formation, centers of evangelization and centers of service, we must allow ourselves to be Gathered into One by the Holy Spirit. Find out! Join us for Ministry Days For more information, go to ministrydays.com. We encourage all parish ministers to come and be a part of this very special event! For more information go to
