2 Page Two April 23, 2017 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR, FR. THOMAS KOYS, M.A.,S.T.L. We say it so often, but we really should correct ourselves. How often do we say, No one s perfect. We re right of course. No one is perfect. Jesus even said, Why do you call me good, no one is good but God alone. But, the reason we should be cautious of saying this, is that it diminished the reality of right and wrong, of good and evil, of virtue and sin. The loss of the sense of sin can be attributed to the replacement of sin with the idea of a mistake. There is a line in the popular modern act of contrition that goes: in choosing to do wrong and failing to do good. Years ago, when I first heard this new version I sensed a problem. In a nutshell, if you choose to turn left when you should have gone right, you make a mistake. But that is not a sin. To correct this faulty spiritual mentality, let s listen to a message from the instrument of Divine Mercy. "I, Sister Faustina Kowalska, by the order of God, have visited the Abysses of Hell so that I might tell souls about it and testify to its existence...the devils were full of hatred for me, but they had to obey me at the command of God, What I have written is but a pale shadow of the things I saw. But I noticed one thing: That most of the souls there are those who disbelieved that there is a hell." (Diary 741) "Today, I was led by an angel to the Chasms of Hell. It is a place of great torture; how awesomely large and extensive it is! The kinds of tortures I saw: The First Torture that constitutes hell is: The loss of God. The Second is: Perpetual remorse of conscience. The Third is: That one's condition will never change. The Fourth is: The fire that will penetrate the soul without destroying it. A terrible suffering since it is a purely spiritual fire, lit by God's anger. The Fifth Torture is: Continual darkness and a terrible suffocating smell, and despite the darkness, the devils and the souls of the damned see each other and all the evil, both of others and their own. The Sixth Torture is: The constant company of Satan. The Seventh Torture is: Horrible despair, hatred of God, vile words, curses and blasphemies. These are the Tortures suffered by all the damned together, but that is not the end of the sufferings. There are special Tortures destined for particular souls. These are the torments of the senses. Each soul undergoes terrible and indescribable sufferings related to the manner in which it has sinned. I would have died. There are caverns and pits of torture where one form of agony differs from another. I would have died at the very sight of these tortures if the omnipotence of God had not supported me. No One Can Say There is No Hell. Let the sinner know that he will be tortured throughout all eternity, in those senses which he made use of to sin. I am writing this at the command of God, so that no soul may find an excuse by saying there is no hell, or that nobody has ever been there, and so no one can say what it is like...how terribly souls suffer there! Consequently, I pray even more fervently for the conversion of sinners. I incessantly plead God's mercy upon them. O My Jesus, I would rather be in agony until the end of the world, amidst the greatest sufferings, than offend you by the least sin." 3 Divine Mercy Sunday Page Three DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY, CELEBRATED ON THE OC- TAVE OF EASTER (the eighth day of Easter; that is, the Sunday after Easter Sunday), is a relatively new addition to the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar. Celebrating the Divine Mercy of Jesus Christ, as revealed by Christ Himself to St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, this feast was extended to the entire Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II on April 30, 2000, the day that he canonized Saint Faustina. Christ's Divine Mercy is the love that He has for mankind, despite our sins that separate us from Him. affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. 'Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!')." A partial indulgence (the remission of some temporal punishment from sin) is granted to the faithful "who, at least with a contrite heart, pray to the merciful Lord Jesus a legitimately approved invocation." THE HISTORY OF DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY The Octave, or eighth day, of Easter has always been considered special by Christians. Christ, after His Resurrection, revealed Himself to His disciples, but Saint Thomas wasn't with them. He declared that he would never believe that Christ had risen from the dead until he could see Him in the flesh and probe Christ's wounds with his own hands. This earned him the name "Doubting Thomas." A week after Christ rose from the dead, He appeared once again to His disciples, and this time Thomas was there. His doubt was vanquished, and he professed His belief in Christ. Nineteen centuries later, Christ appeared to a Polish nun, Sr. Maria Faustina Kowalska, in a series of visions that took place over almost eight years. Among those visions, Christ revealed the Divine Mercy Novena, which He asked Sister Faustina to pray for nine days, beginning on Good Friday. That meant that the novena ended on the Saturday after Easter the eve of the Octave of Easter. Thus, since novenas are commonly prayed in advance of a feast, the Feast of Divine Mercy Divine Mercy Sunday was born. INDULGENCES FOR DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY A plenary indulgence (the forgiveness of all temporal punishment resulting from sins that have already been confessed) is granted on the Feast of Divine Mercy if to all the faithful who go to Confession, receive Holy Communion, pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, and "in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the BENEDICT XVI CELEBRATES 90TH BIRTHDAY WITH BEER THE RETIRED POPE WAS JOINED BY HIS BROTHER, MGR. GEORG RATZINGER, AT THE CELEBRATION: Benedict XVI has celebrated his 90th birthday with a glass of beer and the company of visitors from his native Bavaria in Germany. Benedict sipped the beer alongside his brother, Mgr Georg Ratzinger, and received a gift basket that included pretzels. The retired pontiff was born on April 16, 1927, in southern Germany. But since the birthday coincided this year with Easter Sunday, the occasion was celebrated on Monday. On a sunny, mild day, guests sat outside the monastery on Vatican City grounds where Benedict has lived since he became the first pope to resign in 600 years.
