2 Some thoughts from Fr. Mike Dear Friends, From time to time, especially when the problems and worries of the moment seem to overpower us, it is easy to find life difficult and discouraging. When we feel the ache of stress that can make our bodies sore, our minds weary and souls ache, Jesus invites us to pause and listen to the words that we hear in the Gospel today: Come to me all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Jesus presents himself as the friend and consoler of the weary and oppressed. In the midst of any difficult situation Jesus seems to invite us to come to him with our worries so that he can reassure us that all will be well. In order for Jesus to help us, we must be willing to have complete trust and a childlike dependence, qualities that we may not always retain as we grow into adulthood. When we were young, it seemed second nature to rely completely on the love of those who cared for us. Growing up meant tossing aside this childlike trust and exchanging it for total self-reliance. Outgrowing the paradise of childlike innocence can make it difficult to accept the invitation Jesus gives us to believe that He can sustain us in every situation. So how do we regain that childlike dependency? Perhaps humility is a vital ingredient. In a world where success is too often measured by arrogance, ambition, ruthlessness and self-reliance the importance of humility can be overshadowed. Spiritual humility allows us to admit that we need God. Humility allows us to let go of self and make space for God. When we gather at the Table of the Lord, carrying the troubles and problems of ordinary life, Jesus meets us at our own level. Jesus is willing to give us peace so that we are not overcome by any difficulties we may face. This Gospel passage speaks to us of the tender, personal and practical qualities of Christ s love for us. Jesus reminds us that God is full of mercy and compassion and wants to be a real comfort in times of challenge, pressure and difficulty. God offers us so much because God recognizes the great capacity for goodness that exists in each one of us. To receive the gifts of God we only have to accept the invitation to build up our lives with Jesus as our model. It is a way of life that offers us peace. Peace and prayers, Fr. Mike Mass Schedule + Readings Saturday July - 8 Weekday (Gn 27:1-5, Mt 9:14-17) 5:00pm Jim Hurley r/b The Quigley Family Sunday July th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Zec 9:9-10 Rom 8:9, Mt 11:25-30) Special Healing Intentions of Theresa Munyak r/b Pat & Dick Hileman 11:00am Mildred Vituscka r/b Jane & Ed Baker Monday July-10 Weekday (Gn 28:10-22a Mt 9:18-26) Cendy Lessiohadi r/b Bill & Marie Schubel Tuesday July -11 St Benedict (Gn 32:23-33 Mt 9:32-38) Barbara Texido r/b The Tkachuk Family Wednesday July -12 Weekday (Gn 41:55-57, 42:5-7a, 17-24a Mt 10:1-7) Thursday Nick Costagliola r/b The Legion of Mary July- 13 St Henry (Gn 44:18-21, 23b-29; 45:1-5 Mt 10:7-15) Friday July - 14 St Kateri Tekakwitha (Gn 46:1-7, Mt 10:16-23) Louise Ceriello r/b Lauren & Linette & Family Saturday July- 15 St Bonaventure (Gn 49:29-32, 50:15-26a Mt 10:24-33) 5:00pm George J. 4 SUMMER FAITH ENRICHMENT PROGRAM MOVIE BIBLE STUDY Plan to join us for a Movie Bible Study Program during the easy months of summer. The next gathering will be on July 21 st at 10:00AM. We will be using movies for these gatherings. Not only are movies extremely popular, they are one of the more powerful media expressions of our time. These Bible studies help to harness that power and lead to deeper thought and discussion about the issues and ideas embedded in various films from a Christian perspective. The third meeting will be on August 18 th. FOOD COLLECTION Please remember that our food collections are held on the 1 st and 3 rd weekends of each month. The next food collection will be on July 15/16. Non-perishable food items, paper goods and toiletries are very much appreciated. We are no longer accepting frozen foods as part of the parish food collection. Parishioners can bring frozen food contributions to the Millstone Community Center on any Tuesday mornings between 10:00AM and 11:30AM at the door to the lower level on Stage Coach Rd. You may also contact Greg at to arrange pick up of frozen foods. Thanks for your generosity and support. BABYSITTING/CHILD-SITTING LIST We have compiled a list of parishioners who offer babysitting/child-sitting services. The list is available in a folder attached to the large bulletin board in the vestibule of the church. If you are looking for babysitting/child-sitting services, feel free to take a copy of the list. Remember, the parish is offering this list simply as a service to parishioners. The parish is not endorsing or making any statement about the abilities or qualifications of the individuals on the list. Parents should always check out those they are going to use watch children. SCHOOL SUPPLIES COLLECTION Our parish will be collecting children's school supplies from July 23 until August 6. All donations will benefit the United Way of Monmouth County's "Stuff the Bus" collection drive. Needed are: NEW backpacks, colored pencils, composition notebooks, construction paper, crayons, erasers, folders, glue sticks, pencils, pencil sharpeners, rulers, safety scissors, spiral notebooks, and washable markers. Specially-marked collection boxes will be located in the upper and lower parts of the church - the weekends of July 30/31 through August 13/14. It's never too early to think "school" - and to help kids and families who are having trouble meeting basic needs. Thanks, as always, for your wonderful generosity! * ST. JOSEPH READERS CLUB The next book selected for the Reader s Club is The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens. This book is reviewed as an intelligent and compelling story with characters that will capture you from the start. Set against the backdrop of a brutal Minnesota winter, The Life We Bury is much more than a satisfying, suspenseful novel. The characters are as real as your next-door neighbors, the story compelling, and the writing superb. The next meeting to discuss this book will take place on July 20, 2017 at 7:30PM in the Parish Hall. The theme for refreshments will be All American Food. Newcomers are welcome. Please RSVP your attendance to Fran at ambiofran@gmail.com. BEWARE OF SCAMS Computer scams seem to just be a way of life these days. Trying to avoid them can be difficult. Some scams seem to be reused and given a new push. It seems that an older scam where people call claiming to be from Microsoft is back. Claiming to be responding to error messages from your computer, the caller tries to get you to install software. Microsoft never initiates a call, so you can be certain that it is a scam. p5-604
