3 A Message from The Administrator Page 3 January 6, 2013 Sunday, January 6, 2013 The Epiphany of the Lord A Message from Father Jim Drew Dear Parishioners, Father Charles Pokoo returned to Ghana on Friday, December 28, I am most grateful for his 15 years of service to you, the pastors and other clergy at Our Lady of the Snow. I am especially grateful to him for his pastoral expertise and support during my 18 months here. He spoke eloquently using his Kindle during the 12 Noon Mass on December 16, after which parishioners provided a reception in his honor. As you and I begin a new year, his final words Seven Things are worth taking to heart. How about making them our New Year s resolutions! Seven Things I Leave With You for Consideration and Practice Before I See You Again The Call of the Church! From Rev. Charles Pokoo 1. Prayer for faith (Faith opens us up to the gift of God, which invites us to the banquet of life for He is the way, the truth and life) 2. Forgive yourself and forgive those who hurt you! 3. Confess your sings regularly: Examine your conscience related to all the dimensions of your life physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual and social. 4. Participate constantly in the Eucharist. In the Eucharist you become more like Him Jesus. 5. Practice self-denial. It is in little things that you can finally master yourself. Your success in life greatly depends on that. 6. Be vigilant with any occasion of sin. Sin takes away your peace and well being. 7. Fill your heart and mind with the truth (Know Jesus, for he is truth!). [Study the bible and the teachings of the Church from the catechism of the Catholic Church, especially during this Year of Faith.] Remain faithful until death and He will give you the crown of Life. [Rev 2:10]

4 JANUARY Your Faith and Pilgrimage In January we celebrate the great pilgrimage of the Magi to Bethlehem. They make a new start; their faith directs them beyond the familiar into the unknown, landing them eventually in the city of Jerusalem. These pagan pilgrims know something the religious establishment do not: that the king of the Jews has just been born in their neighborhood. On hearing this, King Herod and his court gather in an aristocratic huddle of discontent. The outsiders have unsettled the institution. The pilgrims learn something from the locals: the town where the new king will be born. Off they go again: their destination is not a palace but a child; their journey s end is not the institution of power but a figure of powerlessness. They bend down before this child, offering him their curious gifts. A journey that started in wonder now leads to worship. The Magi are the patrons of all those who see signposts to God that others neither see nor follow. Most of us travel to God by familiar routes, but we should be hesitant to condemn those who take other roads in search of the same God. If we are all pilgrims in life, we can learn from each other. We may seem strange to each other, but what if the outsider is the one who is heading for God s new address? THE YEAR OF FAITH October 11, 2012 November 24, 2013 The True Meaning of the 12 Days of Christmas? The 12 Days of Christmas is one of the best known and most enduring carols. You will hear it blasting out in every shopping centre up and down the land between now and the 25th of December. But some historians believe it has a far deeper significance and that it was actually written as a catechism song to help young Catholics learn about their faith at a time when the religion was banned. They say the gifts listed are coded references to the teaching of the Church and that the true love mentioned is God himself. No one knows for certain when the song was written, by whom or for what reason, and we are not very likely to find out at this late stage! So here s the secret interpretation which might just give the song an added dimension next time you listen to it. A Partridge in a Pear Tree = Jesus Christ, Son of God Two Turtle Doves = the Old and New Testaments Three French Hens = Faith, Hope and Charity Four Calling Birds = the Four Gospels and the Four Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John Five Gold Rings = the first Five Books of the Old Testament Six Geese A-laying = the six days of creation Seven Swans A-swimming = the seven Sacraments Eight Maids A-milking = the eight Beatitudes Nine Ladies Dancing = the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit Ten Lords A-leaping = The Ten Commandments Eleven Pipers Piping = the eleven faithful Apostles Twelve Drummers Drumming = the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle s Creed PRAYER God our Father, you have called us to tread a pilgrim s path here on earth as we head for the day when we can look on you face to face. Guide us on our journey through this world; defend us from all perils; and give us grace to endure faithfully to the end, through the mercy of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Source: Your Diary for the Year of Faith Author: Dennis McBride CSsR Used with Permission of the Author 11/12/12 It is right and good to pray so that the coming of the kingdom of justice and peace may influence the march of history, but it is just as important to bring the help of prayer into humble, everyday situations; all forms of prayer can be the leaven to which the Lord compares the Kingdom. Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2660
