Confession & Forgiveness P Washed in water and marked with the cross, we are united with Christ and all believers; yet we continue to turn away from God and from one another. In confession today we return to our baptism where our sinful self is drowned and dies; in the gift of forgiveness God raises us up again to new life in Jesus Christ. P Let us pray. God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Kneel for reflection and self-examination. P For self-centered living, and for failing to walk with humility and gentleness: P For longing to have what is not ours, and for hearts that are not at rest with ourselves: P For misuse of human relationships, and for unwillingness to see the image of God in others: P For jealousies that divide families and nations, and for rivalries that create strife and warfare: P For reluctance in sharing the gifts of God, and for carelessness with the fruits of creation: P For hurtful words that condemn, and for angry deeds that harm: P For idleness in witnessing to Jesus Christ, and for squandering the gifts of love and grace: P God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. 3 Gospel: John 12:1-8 P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twelfth chapter: C Glory to you, O Lord. P 1 Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 2There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. 3 Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, 5 Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor? 6 (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) 7 Jesus said, Leave her alone. C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 3

5 Offering Prayer A Let us pray. God our provider, C you have not fed us with bread alone, but with words of grace and life. Bless us and these your gifts, which we receive from your bounty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Great Thanksgiving P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts, C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give him thanks and praise. P It is indeed right, our duty and our joy... we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Hymn You Satisfy the Hungry Heart #484, v. 4 Eucharistic Prayer P Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, who knelt in service and humility, and who, on the cross opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. 6 Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: this cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. Pour out your Holy Spirit, that by this Holy Communion we may know the unity we share with all your people in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father, now and forever. Lord s Prayer A Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. C Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Sit COMMUNION We serve Holy Communion by intinction from the base of the stairs. The ushers will guide you forward. You will receive the bread and then may dip it in the wine or the grape juice. If you would like to receive communion by common cup, we encourage you to receive communion toward the end of distribution out of courtesy for others. You are invited to move to the rail to pray as long as you desire.
