Drew Holland A LOOK AT JULY 29 1,068 Worship Attendance 693 Sunday School Attendance Going for the Gold Sermon Series We joined a billion others on Friday night to watch the opening ceremonies for the London Olympics. I must confess, that I get caught up in Olympic fever every four years. I find myself watching sports that I never watch, some of which I have never heard of. I mean, who knew that walking was an Olympic Sport? What captivates me about the Olympics, whatever the sport, is the human story behind every athlete in every event. Each of these men and women have reached the highest level in their particular sport. Each of them has a story of the dedication, the drive, the hard work, and the sacrifice that has brought them to this event. Each of them are already winners. These athletes will be on stage for a brief moment in their quest to become Olympic champions, but years of preparation to maximize their potential have gone into that moment of competition. What does it take to arrive at that level of peak performance? How do we become the best we can be? What motivates and prepares these athletes? These are questions that can be asked not only of athletes but of all of us. How do we become the best we can be? Scripture often uses the metaphor of athletic training and competition to describe the Christian journey of becoming all that God intends for us to be. In I Corinthians 9:24-25 Paul writes: Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Coffee with the Pastors Sunday, August 5 10 AM LARGE PARLOR This is a casual time for guests to meet the pastoral staff. During this hour, you will learn about the mission statement of the church as well as Trinity s core values. This is also an excellent time to ask general questions and learn more about the church family. CWP is held the first Sunday of the month at 10 AM in the Parlor. Welcome Bishop Wallace-Padgett In September, Bishop Willimon will retire and return to Duke University. At that time, our North Alabama Conference will be receiving it s new Bishop, Rev. Dr. Debra Wallace-Padgett. At the time of her election, Dr. Wallace-Padgett was serving as the Senior Pastor of St. Luke s United Methodist Church in Lexington, Kentucky. Her previous experience includes six years as a District Superintendent in the Kentucky Conference and work with numerous church committees and agencies. She is a graduate of Berea College and the Lexington Theological Seminary. Bishop Wallace-Padgett has provided strong collegial leadership wherever she has been. Her strengths in leadership include facilitating a sense of team work, enabling systemic change, and being open to the work of God s grace. She is a widely respected leader not only in her own Conference, but at the national levels of our church. Bishop Wallace-Padgett s husband, Lee, is a Deacon in the church, serving as the head of a church camping program. They have a 20 year old daughter and a 17 year old son. We look forward to welcoming Bishop Wallace-Padgett to our Conference and to Trinity.
