Originally, the source of our Paschal Triduum was but a single liturgy extending from Saturday sundown to sunrise on Easter Sunday. The two days leading up to the liturgy were days of fast, not only for the elect, but for the church preparing to baptize them. A fifth-century pope explained that the church imitated the apostles, who were in hiding with their grief from the arrest of Jesus, and therefore sacraments, even penance, were forbidden. Inevitably, though, people wanted to come together, and so eventually a Liturgy of the Word developed for Good Friday. This was the first step toward today s shape of the Triduum, and gradually new ideas were embraced, including the veneration of the cross and a simple Communion service. Interestingly, the Word remained central, since we know that in those days the pope did not receive Communion at this liturgy, even though the faithful had that option. In the other churches of Rome, priests and people received Communion under both species. Although the custom of Communion on Good Friday took hold, it did not endure past the Middle Ages. The central liturgies of the year slowly unraveled and disappeared from parish life. Remember that there were no seminaries in those days, and books were a rare luxury. Most priests could only manage to celebrate a simple low Mass, and few parishes could afford the ritual books that would guide a priest through the complex forms. 3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Says one humorist: "Life is unfair. I lost my car keys at a ball game and never found them. I lost my sunglasses at the beach and never found them. I lost my socks in the washing machine and never found them. I lost three pounds on a diet -- I found them and five more." As the New Year started, I was singing a part of the song Smoke Gets in Your Eyes : Something here inside (pounds) cannot be denied! Indeed, I have gained a few pounds in my body, but I just hope I also gained a few pounds spiritually. New Year s Day did not start well for me. I missed the 7 am boat trip to my island (Bohol) after officiating at a wedding and spending New Year's Eve on the nearby island of Cebu, Philippines. The regular 8 am trip was cancelled and I had to wait for the 9:30 am ride. Since it was New Year s Day the food stores inside the Pier Terminal were closed. I took a cab and went to nearest McDonald's, only to find out that it was also closed. Luckily, Jollibee, a local food chain like McDonald s, was open for business. The service was slow, the line was long and a bus boy had just dropped and spilled a glass of Coke on the floor next to the customer just in front of me. I started to curse the day! After finishing my food, I still had 2 hours of time to wait before my trip. I could either spend my time or waste it. I could either continue to curse the day or bless it by doing something good. I decided to break the spell and cut the string by thinking of others more than myself. To enjoy the first day of the year, I had to walk the way of humility, and humility is not "thinking less of yourself" but "thinking of yourself less" so you can think more of others. Our life is not made for oneself but for others. I left the food store and started walking along the street when street children came to me begging for money and food. A little further on there was a blind man with a cane extending his hand to me. A crippled man, who had lost his left hand, also followed me. A mother holding her infant called me out, "Sir, sir, help me." After talking to them, I went back to the store and bought food for them. After feeding them, some others came and there were too many of them. Although giving cash was not a good idea, since some of them might just have been used by some "syndicates," it was a matter of doing something rather than doing nothing. I went back to the pier terminal with the joy in my heart that took away my earlier pronouncement of a bad trip (literally and figuratively). For every bad thing in life, there is always good that comes out. I hope and pray for this New Year that we will spend and use our time wisely. Never waste your time with regrets and hatred in your heart. A giving heart is a caring heart; a caring heart is a loving heart. But my holiday misfortune was nothing compared to Peter Gerald Mellett, who goes to our 7:30AM mass almost everyday. He lost his wife Veronica on Christmas evening, during family trip to Lake Tahoe He is left behind with 5 young children ages Despite the big loss on the special day of Christ s birth, Peter remains strong in his faith declaring: God has a reason for everything; He is the architect of our lives. Please pray for Veronica and her family. Thank you Peter for the inspiration! Like Peter, may we journey in faith, hope and love this New Year! Lending Library in the Pastoral Center This initiative is taking shape. If you have spiritual reading books, religious DVDs, meditation books, etc., please give them to Sr. Cristina. There are five Canossians who served in various ministries in this large city. Escuela Morelos is for children from low-income families. The school is from Kindergarten to 8th Grade. Another important ministry is EDYFICA (Educacion y Formacion Integral Canossiano), which is a human promotion and social center, offering nonformal education and after school programs for women, youth, and children. The Center is located in an impoverished area of Chihuahua. We thank the Lay Canossians and our friends in the parish for donating baked goods, and being present to the people who came to support this worthy cause. We pray for you and your families through the intercessions of St. Magdalene of Canossa and St. Josephine Bakhita. 13 th Walk for Life West Coast 2017 will be held this coming Saturday, January 21, This is an unmatched opportunity to experience the reality of the social teaching of the Catholic faith. Prior to the Walk there will be Mass at St. Mary s Cathedral, to be concelebrated by many Bishops from throughout California. Please come and join us. Pope Francis on Active Non-violence: From his message for the World Day of Prayer for Peace January 1, 2017 To be true followers of Jesus today also includes embracing his teaching about non-violence Jesus Himself lived in violent times. Yet he taught that the true battlefield, where violence and peace meet, is the human heart: for it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come (Mark 7:21) But Christ unfailingly preached God s unconditional love, which welcomes and forgives. He taught his disciples to love their enemies. Jesus marked out the path of non-violence. He walked that path to the very end, to the cross, whereby He became our peace and put an end to hostility (Ephesians 2:14-16).
