2 Page 2 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 19, 2015 THE ROARING TWENTIES A Musical Review in Honor of Buddy Charles Gries the Shiek were part of the stuff that dreams are made of. And the Roaring Twenties was all about dreams - - good and bad. Gershwin s Stairway to Paradise had nothing to do with the Bible. Its dreamscape was the Ziegfeld Follies with angels in sequins and plumes! Far from heavenly, are dark images of gangsters and crime. Speakeasies and night clubs could be a purgatory or a hell. The torch song usually became a prelude to singing the blues. And so the dream often became a nightmare! The real marvel of the Roaring Twenties is that it did not always roar. The songs you will hear at the Buddy Charles concert demonstrate the rich variety of the decade - - everything from the Charleston to Tea for Two to Old Man River, Making Whoopee and Singin in the Rain. The French had a term for the 1920s. They called that revolutionary era the années folles or the crazy years. Commentators like to add up the causes for the decade s unbridled enthusiasm and shocking disregard for tradition. A boom in the economy spawned a new consumerism. Jazz ushered in improvisation and rhythmic dance forms. Modern conveniences - moving pictures, automobiles, radio and electric lights - - became accessible and affordable. Women finally had the right to vote! A sense of adventure and daring seemed to ignite a flaming youth. They were called the Lost Generation or Bright Young Things. Some used their talents to portray disillusionment and a post-war rejection of middle class values. Others seemed to court despair as their muse or nihilism as their only philosophy. Still others were simply amused or intoxicated! Lasting images of the Roaring Twenties include Scott Fitzgerald and his flapper wife, Zelda, jumping into a fountain with a magnum of Veuve Cliquot. Others reveal the star power of Babe Ruth, Charles Lindberg or Rudolf Valentino. The Babe, Lucky Lindy and If there is anything truly enduring about any age - - it is really good music. The late Buddy Charles Gries, his fellow artists, and music lovers everywhere recognize that photographs turn yellow, fashions change, and old recordings sound scratchy or distorted, but great music comes alive when performed by those who have the sensitivity and talent. We are pleased to welcome Buddy s friends and colleagues for the seventh year. It is an honor and joy to share an afternoon of topnotch entertainment, memories of Buddy and just good fun! ISAAC JOGUES DAILY RAFFLE 2016 REPLACE THE ROOF We are preparing to introduce a NEW Raffle that could net $50,000+ for the parish. The Daily Raffle allows booklet holders the opportunity to win 366 days! Prizes range from $50 to $500. Sales begin early September. PLEASE help defray the printing cost by making a donation of any amount and get your name in the booklet. Make your checks payable to St. Isaac Jogues and drop your donations into the Sunday collection, at the rectory, or in the mail marked 2016 Raffle with the name you would like mentioned in the booklet. Contributions must be received by July 29th to be included in the booklet. Any questions can be directed to Kathy Denning, Nancy Winans, Irene Baron or Mary Burke. If you have not had the opportunity to register your children for the Religious Education Program for Kindergarten Confirmation Yr. II (Gr. 8 & older), we encourage you to do so as soon as possible. Kindergarten RE is on Sundays, a.m., and will begin after Labor Day. All other grades meet on Mondays, 6:45-8:00 p.m. and begin at the end of August. Taking care of this important task now will help us to have enough catechists, assistants, and materials ready to make it a good year of faith development for your children and your families! For new families there is a family form, a form for each child and a permission regarding medical attention and photos to sign. We also need a copy of each child s baptismal certificate if they were not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish. Families with children who are older and have not celebrated First Reconciliation or First Communion or who have children with special needs are encouraged to call Dolores Stanton, 847/ , to discuss how we can help them in their education and formation in the faith and preparation for sacraments. If you have a financial concern, please talk to us about it. No one is denied religious education due to financial difficulties. All are welcome! PARISH COMMUNITY PICNIC NEWS **Your help the day of the picnic will be appreciated! Please stop in the Holy Family Room TODAY, see the list of tasks and times and sign up. Many hands will make for an enjoyable time for all! **The next Picnic Planning meeting is this Wednesday, July 22 nd, at 7 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. THANK YOU to Gene for his planting and diligent care of the sunflowers outside the Holy Family Room door, to those helping in any way with the concert (selling tickets last weekend or today, serving beverages, etc.), to those who supported the Fil-Am Organization Fundraiser by buying dinner and/or raffle tickets and to the Fil-Am Organization for making the fundraiser a delightful evening and big success!

The Spiritual Life Commission invites you to Part II of the DVD retreat, Untold Blessing: Three Paths to Holiness, with Fr. This year s special event, Music of the Roaring 20 s, will be at 3 p.m. in the Holy Family Room! Our performers include: Audrey Morris, Bob Solone, Anne Burnell, Mark Burnell, Joel Barry, Bob Moreen, Paul Marinaro, Jeanne Scherkenbach, Steve Heliotes, and Scott Urban as well as Pat Gries (Mrs. Buddy Charles Gries) and Father Luczak! Tickets are $20 per person and will be available at the doors when they open at 2 p.m. It is general seating. For parishioners who did not know Buddy Charles personally, he was a legend in the Chicago cabaret/music scene and performed until a few months before he died. He was an extremely gifted piano man and knew more songs by memory than you could imagine. The performers who are coming, some from a distance, do so because of all that Buddy meant to them as a musician, a friend, and just a great guy! Many people in the parish did not know that side of Buddy Gries. They knew him as the prayer leader for the daily rosary, a catechist in the RE Program for many years, a lector, a friend who listened well and gave wise counsel. He could make you laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time! His wife, Pat, and one daughter, Terry, are still parishioners here and Buddy s other two daughters, Amanda and Tabitha, and one son, Chris, come when they are visiting. Whether you knew Buddy personally or not, he was part of our parish family and his spirit is part of us. So please, come and celebrate! Enjoy an afternoon of great performances and help the parish at the same time. Bring your family members and friends you won t want to miss it! Fall Into Place! Many adult members of our community need help improving basic reading, writing or speaking skills. Fall into place! The VITA Program of Oakton Community College in Skokie needs fall tutors. Barbara is the wife of Nick Sabatello and the daughter-in-law of Tony and Eileen, who are long time members of SIJ. The Sabatello family will be flying into Chicago the week of the memorial mass and would love to see any and all of their old friends who are able to be present for the celebration of Barbara s life.
