2 Page Two Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time February 19, 2012 SHROVETIDE FAREWELL Of Collops, Pancakes and Pączki... To observe the excesses of Carnival and the wanton abandon of Mardi Gras, one could never imagine that the same season has a serious side. Carnival is also known as Shrovetide. To shrive, in Old English, means to pronounce absolution. While the greater part of the populace in pre-reformation England was absorbed in merriment and often gross amusement, the Church urged all to prepare for Lent with a good confession! In fact, on Shrove Tuesday, a bell was rung to call the faithful to the Sacrament of Penance. Oddly, even today, the bell is still rung and the long ago reformed members of the Church of England queue up not for confession, but for pancakes! The bell has been renamed the pancake bell in honor of the custom of serving pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. Shrovetide has a cross-cultural culinary significance. In the days of the strictest Lenten fast, all meat, eggs, and cream had to be used up before Ash Wednesday. Hence, in England, the Monday before Ash Wednesday was called Collop Monday because fragments of left-over meat (collops) were served. At Eton, and other bastions of higher learning, scholars would compose poetry and humorous valedictions to accompany collop banquets. That is why Collop Monday was also known as Poet s Day. Shrove Tuesday, in England and many other places, was Pancake Day. Rich and poor alike feasted on buttery pancakes, then tossed pancakes in a skillet as part of a race! This custom has survived without religious implications, as customs often do. The French term Mardi Gras accurately describes Shrove Tuesday as Fat Tuesday. Butter and oil are a cultural common denominator on the last days before Lent. The Russians call the time Maslenitsa or Butter Week. Without much success, I have tried to trace the origin of the popular Polish custom of Pączki Day. Pączki are jelly doughnuts. In Poland, the Thursday before Ash Wednesday (Tłusty Czwartek), is Fat Thursday. It signals Poland s final indulgence before the great Lenten fast. There is locally no agreement on where to find the best Pączki. Some say Oak Mill Bakery, others Ann s in Ukrainian Village. Still others will direct you to the Old Warsaw Restaurant or other contenders. At the risk of seeming unimpressed or a cultural snob, I have never been impressed by Pączki. In deference to the custom, I like my Pączki dusted with sugar and filled with apricot, raspberry or rose jelly. Where does one find the best Pączki? Hands down, I would say Warsaw! Founded in 1869, Blikle s, on Nowy Swiat St., is a great bakery. I had read about Blikle s before my first visit to Poland in Renowned for tortes and chocolate meringues, Blikle s has an international reputation. My favorite story involves a young French officer who lived above Blikle s from He was a devoted customer. When he returned on a state visit, he greatly praised Blikle s pączki. His name was Charles DeGaulle. As all Frenchmen, he would never have wasted praise on an ordinary jelly doughnut! I brought a Blikle s sampler home to Chicago. They were still fresh after a nine hour flight. On Shrove Tuesday, I know I will enjoy the local pączki, but never so much as those I carried home in my flight bag 39 years ago! 3 Page Three Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time February 19, 2012 Financial Update This week s Financial Update focuses on the Parish s financial results for the first six months of our fiscal year. Through December we are $17,636 AHEAD of our budgeted results. Significant factors leading to this favorable result are: Looking at Income, a $9,966 rebate from the Annual Catholic Appeal has helped to offset shortfalls in our Sunday, Christmas and Deficit Collections. Another $2000 will be received in February, Expenditures are less than our budget due to the elimination of staff positions, lower utility costs, and the unusual lack of snow this winter. Although we are favorable versus our budget for the first six months we still have some major challenges facing the Parish. Sunday Collections continue to lag behind our budget. Through the first week of February we are $3,439 below budget. The total Christmas Collection of $42,698 was $5,302 short of our target of $48,000. St. Isaac Jogues Handbell Choir is about to rise again! The music ministry is looking for people who would like to play the handbells for special Masses and celebrations. You do not need experience with bells, but it is helpful if you have some amount of music reading experience. Even if your last experience with note reading was back in school, we need you! Singers, piano players and band students from 9th grade on up come out and give us a try. I am a handbell instructor of many years and you will learn a lot while having a good time. The plan is to practice on Mondays from 7:00-8:00 PM. The handbells will give you a chance to make music without having to commit to a particular Mass time every weekend. Please come and share your talents. We will meet in the church hall for our first rehearsal on Monday, February 20th at 7:00PM. "Interested musicians should enter through the HFR door and head downstairs for some joyful ringing." LET THE RINGING BEGIN!

4 Page Four Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time February 19, 2012 RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION SPIRITUAL LIFE Last evening we received Patricia Gries into the full communion of the Catholic Church as she made a profession of faith, was confirmed and shared at the Lord s Table for the first time. We welcome and congratulate Pat and we pray for God s blessings upon her as she lives her life in Christ with the Catholic Church and with our parish community in particular! This afternoon Anthony Green will participate in the Rite of Election at Holy Name Cathedral with his sponsor, family and catechists. Anthony is preparing to be initiated into the Church (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) at this year s Easter Vigil. Today he will have his name called aloud as being one of the Elect, those called and chosen by God, with the affirmation of the Church, to come to the waters of salvation. During the Rite of Election Anthony will be greeted and welcomed by Cardinal George, who will preside at this first of five Rites of Election that will be held at the Cathedral. Please pray for Anthony to receive the grace, strength, and help he needs to follow the Lord more closely each day. ASH WEDNESDAY: FEBRUARY 22 This week we mark the beginning of the holy season of Lent with Ash Wednesday. It is a day of fast and abstinence (please see Lent overview given out today). Masses will be at 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Word Services will be at 12 Noon and 4:00 p.m. Ashes will be distributed during all four services. PRAYING AROUND THE TABLE The first of our three Soup Suppers and Presentations will be held this Thursday, February. 23 rd at 6:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. The presentation Praying With Icons will be given by iconographer, Melpo DeFotis. Mrs. DeFotis will talk about icons, how icons draw people into deeper spiritual understanding and will guide us in an experience of meditation with an icon. Some of her icons will be available for purchase that night. Mrs. DeFotis has devoted her time to studying and painting/writing icons since the mid-1980 s and is drawn to the Byzantine and Russian style of icon painting. Her icons can be found abroad and in the U.S. in private collections. She completed her BA in Liberal Arts at Syracuse University and studied oil painting with artists in New York City and Chicago. She has taught iconography workshops at the Dormition Orthodox Monastery in Rives Junction, MI, and is a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Glenview. FRIDAY LENT DEVOTIONS The Divine Mercy Chaplet and Stations of the Cross will be prayed at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on all the Fridays of Lent beginning this Friday, February 24 th. PARISH LENTEN MISSION Our Parish Mission during Lent, Where All Roads Lead, will be on Sunday, March 4 at 3 p.m. and Monday Wednesday, March 5-7, at 7 p.m. in church. Our speakers include Fr. Britto Berchmans, Fr. Dennis O Neill, and Fr. Dominic Grassi. You may remember they were speakers for our soup suppers last Lent and were very well received! 5 Page Five Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time February 19, 2012 GORSKIE ZALE Gorskie Zale, The Bitter Lamentations, a Polish/English Lenten Service will be held in Church next Sunday, February 26 th, at 3:00 p.m. It will be led by Fr. Jason Torba, and accompanied by some of The Lira Singers. The service includes Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. All are welcome we hope you will come and experience this prayer tradition! LITURGY BOARD The Liturgy Board will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Rm. 6. Please make every effort to attend as we will be discussing Holy Week and Easter. If you cannot, contact Julie or Dee. The 2013 Mass Book will be opening on Tuesday, February 21, Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so. Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. HUMAN CONCERNS MINISTERS OF CARE A letter with some important dates and requests for assistance will be mailed out this week. Please be looking for it and respond to be best of your ability. JOSEPH TABLE Our parish s St. Joseph Table will be held on Sunday, March 11 th, beginning with Mass at Noon, followed by the blessing of the table and serving of food 1:30-4:30 p.m. While this tradition, begun as an expression of gratitude for the intercession and help of St. Joseph, has its origin in Sicily, it has enjoyed popularity among many peoples. There is no charge for sharing in the table, but donations received will go to our parish s work of helping the poor and needy. Be sure to check the bulletin in the coming weeks to see how you can help with this year s St. Joseph Table with your prayers, your time (set-up, serving food 3:00-4:30 p.m., clean-up), and/or your meatless food or monetary donations (to prepare the table for all the people who will come). The next St. Joseph Table Planning Committee Meeting will be after evening Mass on Ash Wednesday. TEEN GROUP The Teen Group will meet after the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, Feb. 26. We will be baking cookies for the St. Joseph Table and working on some preparations for that event. We ll also discuss ideas for upcoming meetings. All teens are welcome to join us! FORGIVENESS OF SINS Isaiah announced the word of the Lord: [S] ee, I am doing something new! (Isaiah 43:19). And what was this new thing? A promise for a people who did not call upon me and grew weary of me (43:22); a promise of forgiveness. It is I, I, who wipe out... your offenses; / your sins I remember no more (43:25). Paul told the Corinthians and tells us that Jesus is God s yes, and that all God s promises are fulfilled in Jesus. Does that include God s promise to forgive sins? Mark gives the answer when he relates how some people lowered a paralytic through a hole in the roof, seeking a cure. As far as we can tell, no one requested forgiving the man s sins. But that s what Jesus did, exactly as Isaiah had announced. Then, lest anyone doubt his authority on earth to forgive sins, Jesus said, [P]ick up your mat, and go home (Mark 2:11). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today, in the streets of Rio and New Orleans and in the canals of Venice, Carnival reaches its height. We stand on the brink of Lenten discipline and order, of sacrifice and prayer, and like a diver for pearls, we take a deep breath of life s abundance before immersing ourselves. Literally Good-bye to the Flesh, these once were days for clearing out the barnyard and having one last good roast before turning to fish, to eggs and cheese and porridges. In some places, masks and disguises are worn as a reminder that all falsehood must be stripped away in Lent and our true identity as the baptized must prosper. In others, the green, purple, and gold beads tossed in playful salute have their origins not only in the gifts of the magi, but also entwine the liturgical colors of Ordinary Time, Lent, and Easter. The message, sadly missed by many, is: embrace the Lenten journey, and find your life transformed. Dedicate the next few days to savoring life s wonders, to the abundance of tables laden with great food and surrounded by the laughter of dear friends. RE NEWS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION +The RE Students, Catechists and Assistants invite family members and interested parishioners to join them at 7:30 p.m. Monday night for a Pre-Lent Prayer Service. Miss Mallari s Sixth Grade Class will assist with our prayer, which will help kick off our Lent almsgiving for Operation Rice Bowl. +Families are reminded that the rice bowls are for collecting alms throughout the season of Lent. They are to be returned on Monday, April 2 nd. CATHOLICISM SERIES Fr. Robert Barron s beautiful series, CATHOLICISM, will resume being shown on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. beginning Feb. 29 th. We will not meet on Ash Wednesday. The Friday evening showings will resume after Easter. For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put people s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
