INFORMATION THE PUBLIC SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PLANNED PARENTHOOD Planned Parenthood 2015 annual report shows increases in abortion numbers and taxpayer funding in 2015, alongside decreases in contraception, breast exams and overall patient numbers. Planned Parenthood continued to maintain its status as the largest abortion provider in the United States (and again, increased its market share of that industry). The abortion group performed 328,348 abortions on unborn babies, 4,349 more than the previous year, according to the report. At the same time, it saw 2.4 million patients, about 100,000 fewer than the previous year and about 500,000 fewer than five years ago. Contraception services, which the abortion chain touts Meanwhile, the abortion chain received more taxpayer funding. The report shows Planned Parenthood receiving $554.6 million, up from $553.7 million the previous year. This pattern is consistent with its annual reports from the past several years. Abortions and taxpayer funding keep going up, while patient numbers and other services go down. Recent polls also indicate Americans support the defunding efforts. New polling found 56 percent of Americans in battleground states want Planned Parenthood defunded. (From LifeSite News) A person is a person no matter how small. Dr. Seuss

16 In the Church s liturgy for October 16th there is an optional memorial of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visitation nun in France who, in the 17th Century, experienced apparitions of Christ. These four visions of Our Lord provided the catalyst for the promotion of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. For example, the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus occurs every June, and the Church proposes dedication of that month to its devotion. Jesus expressed His desire for people to practice this devotion, to honor and consecrate themselves to His Most Sacred Heart. He also asked for acts of reparation, frequent Holy Communion, especially on the First Fridays of the month (nine consecutive in a year), and to observe a Holy Hour of devotion to Him. He also gave St. Margaret Mary twelve promises to those who practice this devotion. At a time when sacramental communion was very rare among the faithful, notes the Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy, the first Friday devotion contributed significantly to a renewed use of the Sacraments of Penance and of the Holy Eucharist. Sacred Heart devotion existed quite independently of St. Margaret Mary. In the Jewish religion, the heart symbolizes a person s core where spiritual activity occurs. Therefore, the Bible is full of symbolism and metaphors regarding the importance of the heart (a few verses that demonstrate this are Deuteronomy 6:4-6, Matthew 22:36-40, Luke 2:51, and Luke 12:32-34). As early as the 11th Century Christians meditated on the Five Wounds of Christ, private devotions which helped them to focus on the passion and death of Christ, and thus to grow in love for the Savior who had suffered and died for us. From this sprung devotion to the wounded heart of Jesus. In 1673, Jesus showed St. Margaret Mary a vision of His Sacred Heart surrounded by flames of love which has now become associated with the devotion. The Catechism of the Catholic Church also spells out the reason this devotion is important: Jesus knew and loved us each and all during his life, his agony and his Passion, and gave himself up for each one of us He has loved us all with a human heart. For this reason, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, pierced by our sins and for our salvation, is quite rightly considered the chief sign and symbol of that... love with which the divine Redeemer continually loves the eternal Father and all human beings without exception (#478). The appearance of Jesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque is a private revelation (and as such isn t necessary for belief, versus the public revelation of the Bible, which is) that is based on longstanding tradition and provides rich material for contemplation. Prayer to the Sacred Heart can be as lengthy as a novena or litany, or as simple as a spontaneous, Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. It can involve personal consecration or family home enthronement. Learn more about this beautiful devotion, to grow in your love for the burning heart of Jesus. Paul Schultz

18 FROM THE RELIGIOUS ED DEPARTMENT AT ST. JOSEPH: Hello, my name is Paul Jozwiak. I am excited to be the new Coordinator of Religious Education at St. Joseph s Edgerton. I wanted to introduce myself. I was raised in Lodi, Wisconsin which is not known for much other than holding a special day to celebrate Suzie the Duck, the town mascot. I first knew I wanted to work in the Catholic Church towards the end of high school so I made that was my goal all through college. After college I wanted to get more involved in religious education and youth ministry and I started volunteering at my local parish, helping out wherever I could. 19 33 DAYS TO MORNING GLORY STUDY AT ST. MARY: Join us for a study on 33 Days to Morning Glory beginning Sunday, October 22 and continuing each Sunday after mass for 6 weeks. Registration fee is $15 for materials. Contact Vicki at to sign-up! About 33 Days to Morning Glory Days to Morning Glory is an extraordinary 33-day journey to Marian Consecration by Fr. Michael Gaitley. It is done in a retreat format: reading daily and meeting weekly for DVD teaching by Fr. Gaitley and group discussion. The book takes you to the heart of Jesus through Mary by learning about four spiritual giants: St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Pope St. John Paul II. Fr. Gaitley masterfully summarizes the teachings of these 4 saints, making it easy to grasp and simple enough to put into practice. He weaves their thought into a user-friendly, 6-week retreat that will bless the busiest of people. What is Marian Consecration to Jesus through Mary? The basic premise set forth by St. Louis Marie de Montfort is simply that Jesus came into the world through Mary and that for us to always be assured of being close to Jesus, even closer than ever before, we should go through Mary. Initially, this idea may seem strange to some. Why consecration? And why consecration through Mary? What does that even mean? Consecration means to set aside for a sacred purpose. Mary s life was set aside for the sole purpose of serving our Lord. By following her example, we, too, can completely give ourselves to Christ in a fundamental way that consecrates us to Him. We give our lives to Him in service and love. Consecration to Jesus through Mary according to the method of St. Louis de Montfort is a method used by Pope John Paul II and it is this consecration that lead to the founding of Rosary Army in Why do this? We consecrate ourselves in order to be more devoted to the Lord and His Blessed Mother. It helps us grow in holiness and increase our faith, hope, and love. It is a prayerful and focused method of drawing closer to Jesus than ever before.
