11 MEDICAL DECISION MAKING AND END OF LIFE ISSUES ST. PAUL, EVANSVILLE: On Sunday, January 27 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Paul s Catholic Church, Evansville in the lower level, Matt Von Rueden, Development Director for Pro-Life Wisconsin, will present information on end of life issues. Matt grew up in Milwaukee, attended Marquette University High School, and then went on to earn a BA in Theological Studies from Saint Louis University and a Masters in Theological Studies from Boston College. Matt has been involved in the pro-life movement all his life, but became particularly active in college where he served as the president of Students for Life at Saint Louis University. Some of Matt s speaking points will be: Food and hydration are not health care, they are basic means of survival for anyone. There is a steady movement towards less concern for providing the best medical care and more concern for cost containment. In The Euthanasia Society of America introduced... the Living Will as a step toward social and legal acceptance of euthanasia. Pro-Life Wisconsin's Protective Power of Attorney for Health Care (PPAHC) indicates (that) YOUR AGENT shall determine how to interpret the document and your wishes (instead of someone else). The PPAHC states "Nothing in this document shall authorize anyone to approve or commit any action or omission which will cause my death." The POLST - Physician s Order for Life -Sustaining Treatment, and how this will affect your living wills and your power of attorney for health care documents. The one hour talk will start with a light lunch of sub sandwiches, drink and dessert. Please consider bringing a small donation to cover the cost of the meal and speaker. Call Karen at to RSVP for the lunch. Pornography changes the way children and adults think about sex and marriage. A recent survey of American teens showed that they believe not recycling is now a worse issue than watching pornography. It s time to reclaim virtue and protect our young people from the tempting pull of inappropriate online content. 12 Jayme Closs, the 13-year-old girl kidnapped for 88 days in northwestern Wisconsin after the murder of her parents, has been found alive. Prayers for her safe return were answered. But what about over fifty other missing and exploited children from the state? What about terminally ill children, those who follow through on suicidal thoughts, those enslaved by opioid addiction, or plead desperately not to be gay? What about the marriage that s falling apart, or those who have lost a child before birth, either through miscarriage or abortion. Where is the answer to these prayers? Why does President Trump even need to build a wall when God already has an impenetrable barrier, so it would seem, to block out our earnest requests? Didn t Jesus say, Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you (Matthew 7:7)? Of course, the promises Our Lord made in the Sermon on the Mount are not unconditional. It would turn prayer into magic. If every prayer was answered it wouldn't be just the Rams, Saints, Chiefs, and Patriots playing for the chance to advance to the Super Bowl today. Especially the Patriots. Or consider praying for a job. Only one person is going to land it. Does that mean the prayers of those other applicants went unanswered? As it is naïve to expect responsible parents to grant every wish of their children, a similar wisdom should be expected of our heavenly Father. Oh, there are plenty of explanations given: You didn t pray hard enough. You didn t have enough faith. You were asking for the wrong thing. Everything happens for a reason. Something better is coming. While these all might have an element of truth, it often feels of little consolation. The truth is, we may never fully understand God s perspective on this side of eternity. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, the Lord tells us in Isaiah 55:9, so are my ways higher than your ways, my thoughts higher than your thoughts. Jesus knew firsthand the experience of unanswered prayer. On the night before he died, Jesus pleaded repeatedly with God to be spared the suffering that awaited him. Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done. Maybe that last part is the key. Surrendering what you want to the will of God. An apostle s instruction in prayer would seem to confirm this: This is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us (1 John 5:14). Even when prayer doesn t seem to be answered, still the act of prayer is not wasted regardless of the divine response. By ending every prayer request with but let Your will be done in this situation we unite our suffering to the prayer of Jesus. Paul Schultz

15 pretending, and it s a way of lying to ourselves. Week 3: We Lie To Ourselves If we are going to move beyond the lies that our culture tells us, we have to stop lying to ourselves. And not only does God want us not to lie to other people, but he wants us not to lie to ourselves. He wants us to be rigorously honest with ourselves. And learning to be rigorously honest with ourselves is not as easy as it sounds. Think about the next twenty-four hours, how often you lie to other people, how often you lie to yourself, how often you tell other people the whole truth, how often you don t tell other people the whole truth, how often you hold back the whole truth about yourself and from yourself. We ve got to stop lying to other people. We ve got to stop lying to ourselves. from a series of reflections titled, Overcoming the Lie by Matthew Kelly, available in video format at Dynamic Catholic. Based on his book, The Biggest Lie in the History of Christianity, your free Christmas gift from St. Mary and St. Joseph parishes. Do you ever lie to yourself? We all tend to do it. We lie to other people, but we also lie to ourselves. And one of the biggest lies in our culture right now is that it s more important to be perceived to be something than to actually be something. When you look at all that s going on in social media, it s really a great game of pretending. We re pretending to be something other than what we are. We give people these shots, these instances in our lives, where we think, That s a fabulous moment. But that s not a whole life. That s not who we are. It's a game of
