A Perfect Gift USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities CODE: 7AH4V4 Register today! Stewardship: A Way of Life Second Sunday of Lent I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession. Genesis 15:7 Just as the Lord gave Abraham, Moses and the Israelites a land to possess, He has also given each of us a home. Whether our home is grand or humble, it is a gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him. How do we show our gratitude to God for the home He has given us? Do we make a sacrifice of any kind? Do we return any of our finances to God, investing equally in our eternal home just as we invest in our earthly home?

8 Without some knowledge of the historical and cultural background this weekend s passage from Genesis describing God s covenant with Abram could be a trippy read. Animals cut in half with a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch floating between them. Really? Really! The Bible is full of symbolism and this ceremony is loaded with meaning. God reveals his plan of loving goodness in progressive stages, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) explains it. By sinning we have separated ourselves from the eternal love of God, preferring instead the temporary pleasures of this world. Therefore, God our loving Father uses the concept of covenant to deliver us from sin and its consequences, the very definition of salvation. A divine covenant is different from a human covenant. The first is a sacred bond while the latter is a contract. Covenants between God and humanity began with the first between Adam and Eve as One Holy Couple. Then they occur in an everexpanding way with Noah (family), Abram (tribe), Moses (nation), and David (kingdom). God chose Abraham and made a covenant with him and his descendants. By the covenant God formed his people and revealed his law to them through Moses. Through the prophets, he prepared them to accept the salvation destined for all humanity. (CCC #72) Jesus delivered on that salvation by establishing a new and eternal covenant at the Last Supper. In it He alone assumes the penalty for breaking the covenant, just as the Lord did with Abram many years before. It was common practice in the desert communities of the Middle East at the time of Abram in which a covenant of mutual agreement was reached through a ritual ceremony where several sacrificial animals were split in two and the participating parties walked between them. This is where we get the term cutting a deal. The message was that if either party broke the covenant they would end up like those animals. As far as the symbols in Abram s covenant ceremony with God, smoke is understood to represent the presence of God and fire symbolizes the Lord s glory (for example, check out the tongue-twisting verse Psalm 29:7). In Scripture, birds sometimes represent the action of Satan (like in Jesus parable of the sower) so that is why Abram had to stay with the dead animals to keep the birds of prey from swooping down on them. Abram did not pass through the carcasses during his covenant ritual only the Lord did, thereby taking all the consequences upon Himself. God sentences Himself to die in the place of Abram and his descendants if they ever sin... which is exactly what happens with Jesus. Paul Schultz

11 All life has inestimable value even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor, are masterpieces of God s creation, made in his own image, destined to live forever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect. Pope Francis July 28, 2013 St. Mary parishioner, Mary Kate O Leary, is currently volunteering in Kenya, Africa at the Nyumbani Village. Nyumbani means home in Swahili. Nyumbani was founded in 1992 by an American priest, Father D Angostino, along with Sister Mary Owens, when they realized the orphanages in Kenya were turning away infants with HIV/Aids. Father D. died in 2006, but Sister Mary continues on as the executive director. Mary Kate is a recent graduate of UW Madison and chose to volunteer at the Nyumbani Village, where up to 1,000 children and 100 grandparents who are displaced by Aides, live in small cottages. Nyumbani is the first self-sustainable village. It provides a stable home for healing and self-reliance. Their needs are great. Your help is needed to provide basic personal care items, such as underwear. You can read more at their website: nyumbani.org. Mary Kate is requesting donations to help the village. Donations can be made directly through the website, or by sending monies to her parents: Bill & Mary Ellen O Leary, 377 Fairway, Milton, WI % of the money received will be deposited into her account and used directly for the projects she is working on in Kenya. All donations are tax deductible. Most of all, we are asking for your prayers for the children/elders at the village and the safety of our daughter as she volunteers. Questions? Call us at Bill & Mary Ellen O Leary

12 Section Two (11-16) Did you ever stop and think about the fact that you are made in the image and likeness of God? In the story of Creation we read: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27) What does this mean? According to Pope John Paul II it means that we have the capability to love others and enter into communion with them. In marriage, we are able to enter into communion with our spouse. Sex is not simply a biological act, but it concerns the innermost being of the human person. (11) It communicates a total gift of self to the other. The only place where an authentic gift of self is possible is in marriage. Why? It is because in marriage the couple freely chooses to enter into a covenant bond where they promise to live in fidelity to one another. A marriage should be a sign of the love that Christ has for his people. Jesus Christ suffered and died on the cross for us, the Church. We are called to imitate this love. Our marriages should reflect this love. Jesus will be with us always (Matt. 28:20) and he will never abandon his bride. In the same way, married couples can never abandon each other. Because love is a gift, it is fruitful and capable of the gift of a new life! Children are a permanent sign of the unity and faithfulness of a married couple. There are also those, such as priests and religious, who choose not to get married in order that they might give themselves completely in service to the Church. They help us anticipate Heaven where we will neither marry, nor be given in marriage. (Matt. 22:30) Questions for Discussion 1. What does Pope John Paul II call the fundamental and innate vocation of every human being? (11) 2. Find the qualities of a Christ-centered marriage in paragraph 13. Can you think of a couple in your life who exemplifies these qualities? 3. Can you describe how someone who has chosen celibacy can still become the father or mother of many? (16) See John 15:12-13 and CCC Adapted from High School Study Guide on Familiaris Consortio by Theresa Simeo.

14 Light in a Dark World When was the last time you experienced a miracle? When was the last time you heard the story of someone else s miracle? MOME Women from the Milton United Methodist Church celebrated 5 years of this ministry last Friday! When I dropped off the St. Mary donations at 9:00 a.m., many of the tables were already filled with clothing, but the women greeted me with smiles and thanks. Director JoLynn Stankus, holding the cake with her daughter, arrived after working the night shift ready to sort donations. She began this ministry when she found there was a need in Milton. Eight families attended the first exchange in February 2011 and in September 2011 there were 86 families! The numbers continue to grow. The exchange is held on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed to pack up the remaining donations at the end of the exchange. They are always open to new volunteers joining them! The women meet the Friday before at 9:00 a.m. to set up their fellowship hall. The young moms bring their young children to help, too! Check it out! they are a light in a dark world! Last weekend s Family and Youth ministries heard Rod Montanye share a miracle experienced by his family involving his daughter-in-law and grandchild who is now 15 months old. Ask Rod or Lynn about it! We watched videos of a couple Eucharistic Miracles that make you think about the next time you go up to receive Communion at Mass. We thought about God choosing us at our Baptism to follow Him. The Stations of the Cross which hang on our walls all year long...do we look at and acknowledge their presence and remember Jesus sacrifice for us? Jesus is a light in a dark world. We who follow Jesus are a light in a dark world. Others with whom we share our faith may become a light in a dark world. Witness the miracle of the Eucharist with your children every time you get the chance! They may complain now...but when they need Jesus, they will know where to find him. ~Sabrina

Join our group and bring your idea with you! Current Members: Marci Brandt, Linda Groeschl, Jessica Schafer-Locher, Mike Sessler, Gail Slepekis, Rick Tomten, Mike Tracey, Steve Vicenzi, Mari Anne Warren, Mark Warren.
