12 The Easter season concludes this weekend with the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles at Pentecost. Two weeks ago, Abbot Marcel Rooney, OSB, called down the same Spirit on a hundred teens at St. Joseph when he confirmed them and sealed them with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. At the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the priest directs the prayer that calls down the Holy Spirit upon the offerings of bread and wine. On this celebration of the birth day of the Church, it would do good to reflect on when this happens during Mass. The term Spirit translates the Hebrew word ruah, which, in its primary sense, means breath, air, wind, the Catechism of the Catholic Church informs us (#691). We see this played out in the Gospel where Jesus appears to the disciples in the upper room and he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the holy Spirit (John 20:22). In the Old Testament, Elijah called down the fire of the Lord upon his offering in order to show the true God when the Israelites had fallen into false worship (1 Kings 18:1-40). In the same way, the ordained priest stands between God and the people calling down the fire of the Lord the Holy Spirit upon the offerings at the sacred altar. This calling down of the Holy Spirit is called the epiclesis (epi-klisis, a Greek word meaning invocation or calling down ) and it happens in two parts. Using the second of the four Eucharistic prayers as an example, the priest says the following while extending his hands, palms downward, over the chalice and host, and traces the sign of the cross over them: Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the Body and Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Following the words of consecration, the epiclesis is completed by asking the Holy Spirit to unify the faithful by their participation in this sacrament. This is echoed by St. Paul in the second reading when he writes in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body (1 Corinthians 12:13). The priest concludes the consecration by leading the entire assembly in these words (again, from Eucharistic Prayer II), Humbly we pray that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. The Catechism sums up this entire process: In the epiclesis, the Church asks the Father to send his Holy Spirit (or the power of his blessing) on the bread and wine, so that by his power they may become the body and blood of Jesus Christ and so that those who take part in the Eucharist may be one body and one spirit (#1353). PASTORAL COUNCIL NOMINEES Terri Borneman: I have lived in Milton since Together with my husband Darand, we have two teenage sons, Alexander and Noah. I am a founding member of the Milton Lions Club. As a food scientist and director of quality assurance in the meat industry, I enjoy serving dinner at the GIFTS Men s Shelter and providing meals for funerals. I will be proud to witness my nephew Andrew receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders this June in Madison. It would be an honor to serve on the Pastoral Council. I am one of the co-leaders for funeral meals, a Eucharistic Minister and have served on the Pastoral Council for the past 3 years. I received my Masters Degree in Education from UW-Whitewater. I taught four years at St. William Parish in Janesville and 30 years at Milton West School with second graders. I also worked at JC Penney part-time in the catalog department for 19 years. My husband is Bill Schrank. He taught music, did Show Choirs and musicals at Milton High School for 32 years. We have 2 sons and 2 lovely daughters-in-law. Our family is complete with 8 grandchildren ranging in age from 6 to 22! Bill and I both are enjoying retirement with traveling, fishing, golf and grandchildren!

14 TRUSTEE NOMINEES Barry A. Brandt: Barry Brandt is the chief executive officer of Janesville, WI based Rock Energy Systems, LLC the leading manufacturer of waste oil fired heaters and boilers and portable radiant heaters. Brandt, along with his family, moved to Janesville in 2009 and has been an active member of St. Mary s since then. Brandt has served several years on the St Mary s finance council, is a member of the Knights of Columbus and is an active usher in the parish. Brandt has a BBA and MBA from UW-Whitewater. Val Crofts: Sandy Tieglman: My name is Sandy Tieglman. I am 54 years young. I was born and raised in West Bend, WI, approximately 35 minutes north of Milwaukee, WI. I am the youngest of two children. I have an older brother, and my dad, Nick Habersetzer, who both live in West Bend. I have two daughters, Stephanie (Fayetteville, NC) and Heather (Orfordville, WI), and two step daughters Lisa (West Bend, WI) and Krysta (Mayville, WI). I am married to Jim Tieglman for almost 12 years. Between the two of us, we have 11 grandchildren, aging between 7 months and 22 years of age. We are also the proud owner of a rescue dog named Mika. I attended St. Mary s Elementary School in West Bend, WI for all 8 grades. I attended St. Mary s Springs High School in Fond du Lac, WI and graduated in I attended UW Eau Claire, WI and Moraine Park Technical College majoring in Accounting. We moved to the Milton area in 1997 where we joined St. Mary Parish. In 2007, we built a new home in Beloit, WI. We are still members of St. Mary s in Milton, because we consider St. Mary s home. I have been an usher and am currently a reader at the 9:00AM mass. I am currently employed at Lemans Corporation for the past 4 ½ years. I work in the Accounts Receivable department. My previous work history has been in banking, Accounts Payable, Shipping and Receiving, and Accounts Receivable. I also run my own craft business out of our home, and do craft shows throughout Wisconsin and Illinois. I have had this business since I was 16 years old. Continued on next page.

Eric Weins: Eric Weins was baptized and confirmed at Nativity of St. Mary Parish in Janesville. He has been a member of St. Mary s Parish in Milton for the past 15 years. Eric has a bachelor s degree in finance from UW-Whitewater and has worked in corporate finance as a financial analyst for more than 10 years, most recently for Alliant Energy. Eric feels he would be a good candidate for the parish trustee position because of his interest and experience in finance. TEEN L!FE CAMP: Held August 6-11 in Green Lake, WI, L!fe Camp includes educational sessions, pro-life speakers, opportunities to make new friends, the Baby Bean Coffee Shop, games and movie nights, swimming, and more! MERCY HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Mercy Hospice needs volunteers to visit with our patients, and provide respite for family caregivers, and do activities such as play cards, do puzzles, watch programs, etc. If you can share as little as 4 hours a month, we would love to have you as part of our hospice team!
