Matthew 25:40 Most of us are generous when it s convenient for us. We are generous when we have the time or the money. But, generosity is the opposite of that. It means giving of one s time, money, compassion, forgiveness or mercy when it s not convenient; when it s not on our schedule, but on the other person s schedule. 13 IMAGINE...You re five years old. Christmas is coming soon. Your friends are talking eagerly about presents, cookies and candy and delicious meals. But at your house, you'll be lucky to have a bowl of cereal. Maybe this year, you hope, you won't have to imagine your Christmas being hungry. 16 My dad was recently hospitalized. Shortly after being admitted, the doctor came into his room and posed a frightening scenario. If he had a heart attack right there in the hospital bed and died, should healthcare providers administer CPR and try to bring him back to life? If so, that sequence of events could include a tube being inserted down his throat, and rib-cracking chest compressions, with the possible result still being severe brain damage that would necessitate continual care for the rest of his life. Since my dad had no other directives on file, the attending physician was trying to determine whether or not to issue a do-notresuscitate order. In the heat of the moment, a rash decision could be made on the part of the patient without the opportunity to take into consideration the morality of such medical treatment in light of his Catholic faith. It doesn t have to be this way. The National Catholic Bioethics Center provides a clear and concise four-page publication that addresses these concerns called A Catholic Guide to End -of-life Decisions: An Explanation of Church Teaching on Advance Directives, Euthanasia, and Physician Assisted Suicide. In it, the redemptive nature of suffering is articulated, distinctions pointed out between what is morally required and morally optional in endof-life situations, and the role of advanced medical directives and health care proxies is explained. No one likes pain and suffering, yet Our Lord endured both even to the point of death so that we might be eternally saved. Because of this, our pain and suffering can be joined with the same that Jesus experienced for the benefit of ourselves and others. Therefore, pain and suffering is not useless (or doesn t need to be). In the face of pain and suffering, there are ordinary and extraordinary means of conserving one's life. Generally, says the Guide, a medical procedure that carries with it little hope of benefit and is burdensome is deemed extraordinary and is not obligatory. Routine treatment, including pain management, is considered ordinary and we would be morally bound to accept it. Providing food and water, as an example, even if through a feeding tube, would be deemed ordinary care. When the body can no longer process it, however, there is no benefit and it may be withdrawn. If a patient becomes incapacitated or otherwise unable to make health care decisions, there are legal

17 documents that can make known what medical procedures he or she would like to receive or avoid. In an advanced medical directive, specific wishes can be spelled out. A health care proxy specifies a person who will make medical decisions on the behalf of the patient. A proxy is preferable to an advanced medical directive since that individual will be able to make informed choices based on the particular case. When a certain quality of life fails to be maintained, an increasingly popular option today seems to be euthanasia or so-called physicianassisted suicide. The Guide explains how this violates the dignity of the body and short-circuits efforts to allow suffering to be redemptive. The Guide concludes on a note of hope in the reunion of our soul and resurrected body at the end of time, and as a nice reminder during this month dedicated to the holy souls in purgatory our need to continue prayer even after death: When our loved ones have passed on from this life, we should remember our obligation in charity and justice to pray for the repose of the souls of the faithful departed and in this way remain in communion with our beloved family members and friends. You can get a copy of this Guide, complete with a ready-to-be-filled-out Advanced Medical Directive form and Health Care Designation Proxy form, just by asking the parish office for it at St. Mary s. These two forms can be prepared without the assistance of an attorney and filed with your primary care physician. Please don t wait until a time of serious sickness or an unexpected incident to make sound moral decisions regarding your medical treatment known. For further reading on these issues, there is an excellent book in the parish library at St. Mary (aka the Ark ) that you can check out called A Will to Live: Clear Answers on End of Life Issues by Archbishop Jose H. Gomez. Paul Schultz Reasonable, practical, and best of all in question-and-answer format, this 68-page book can be of valuable assistance and comfort for those with important medical decisions to be made in accord with church teachings. Sample queries include, What is palliative medicine? and How much suffering must a terminally ill Christian tolerate?
