13 Novena comes from the Latin word novem, meaning "nine," and for Catholics this has come to mean nine days of focused prayer (either public or private) to obtain special graces, to implore special favors, or make special petitions. It originates with the period of time after the Ascension of Our Lord into heaven as the Apostles awaited the descent of the Holy Spirit upon them at Pentecost. Together they devoted themselves to constant prayer. (Acts 1:14a) Since the third century history notes these nine-day periods of prayer and they were commonplace by the Middle Ages. August is dedicated to devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, with several liturgical celebrations honoring the Blessed Virgin during the month. There is a longtime novena spotlighting her Assumption and by starting it this Sunday, you could have it completed by its Solemnity on the 15th. (Then, top it off by attending Mass that day!) When praying a novena, it can either be the same prayer for all nine days (such as the one shown in the column to the right) or a different prayer for each day. Every novena is a bit different in the intention, formation of prayers and practice. Paul Schultz Novena Prayer for the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Mary, Queen Assumed into Heaven, I rejoice that after years of heroic martyrdom on earth, you have at last been taken to the throne prepared for you in heaven by the Holy Trinity. Lift my heart with you in the glory of your Assumption above the dreadful touch of sin and impurity. Teach me how small earth becomes when viewed from heaven. Make me realize that death is the triumphant gate through which I shall pass to your Son, and that someday my body shall rejoin my soul in the unending bliss of heaven. From this earth, over which I tread as a pilgrim, I look to you for help. I ask for this favor: (Mention your request). When my hour of death has come, lead me safely to the presence of Jesus to enjoy the vision of my God for all eternity together with you.

14 Love Begins Here Missionary Nick Richards (4 years) One Service project that stood out: Helping out at the LBH Office at the Catholic diocese, helped me put into perspective how much planning it takes to help that many people. Best experience or encounter: How grateful all the people we helped were when we finished. Encourages my faith: It helps me find God through serving the people.

15 Intro and Background It didn t take Pope John Paul II long to reveal his love for the message of Divine Mercy revealed to Sister Faustina Kowalska (now declared a saint) in his home archdiocese of Kraków, Poland. During the 1930's Sister Faustina received revelations from Our Lord telling her of His infinite mercy for mankind. In his third year as Pope, John Paul II released the encyclical letter Dives in Misericordia (Latin for Rich in Mercy ) on November 30, 1980 with the subtitle, On the Mercy of God. This was only his second encyclical and it continued the examination of world problems brought up in his first, Redemptor Hominis (In English: The Redeemer of Man ), teaching that the only authentic Christian response to these rising difficulties is through love informed by God's mercy, especially as revealed in the love of the Father in the Trinity. The biblical parable of the Prodigal Son is utilized as a central theme. We are deep into the Year of Mercy and in the formal proclamation of this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis calls upon the Blessed Virgin Mary to watch over us (note how she is invoked as the Mother of Mercy in the Hail, Holy Queen prayer) and invites prayer to saints and blessed ones who made divine mercy their mission in life, specifically naming St. Faustina. May she, who was called to enter the depths of divine mercy, intercede for us and obtain for us the grace of living and walking always according to the mercy of God and with an unwavering trust in his love. (Misericordiae Vultus, #24) Dives in Misericordia is divided into fifteen distinct sections. There are fifteen weeks left until the Year of Mercy ends. Coincidence? I think not. Therefore, we will look at one section each week in these pages to reflect on the role of both God's mercy and also the need for human mercy in our daily lives. The encyclical is readily available both online and in printed form if you would like to follow along. It can also be found in books such as The Encyclicals of John Paul II: An Introduction and Commentary by Richard A. Spinello.

16 World Youth Day has concluded in Krakow, Poland and upward of one million people gathered with Pope Francis for the closing Mass on July 31st. The Holy Father s homily focused on three obstacles to building a real relationship with Jesus and how to overcome them. 1) Smallness of stature The pope remarked that we can risk not getting close to Jesus... because we don t think ourselves worthy. But God loves us the way we are, and no sin, fault or mistake of ours makes him change his mind. Our importance comes from our spiritual identity as children of God. In his eyes the clothes you wear or the kind of cell phone you use are of absolutely no concern. He doesn t care whether you are stylish or not; he cares about you! In his eyes, you are precious, and your value is inestimable. 2) The paralysis of shame To follow Jesus there is a chance of being ridiculed, but the risk is rewarded. Dear young friends, urges the pope, don t be ashamed to bring everything to the Lord in confession, especially your weaknesses, your struggles and your sins. He will surprise you with his forgiveness and his peace. 3) Grumbling of the crowd Barriers impeding intimacy with Jesus can come from outside pressure as well. This requires boldness. He demands of us real courage: the courage to be more powerful than evil by loving everyone, even our enemies. People may laugh at you because you believe in the gentle and unassuming power of mercy. But do not be afraid. Practice honesty and seek justice, the pope concludes, and don t be discouraged! 837 Parkview Dr. Milton, WI S. Saint Joseph Circle Edgerton, WI
