While Christian persecution takes many forms, it is defined as any hostility experienced as a result of identification with Christ. Christians throughout the world continue to risk imprisonment, loss of home and assets, torture, beheadings, rape and even death as a result of their faith. Trends show that countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East are intensifying persecution against Christians, and perhaps the most vulnerable are Christian women, who often face double persecution for faith and gender. According to Open- Doors, an organization serving persecuted Christians world-wide, every month: *255 Christians are killed*, *104 are abducted*, *180 Christian women are raped, sexually harassed or forced into marriage*, *66 churches are attacked*, and *160 Christians are detained without trial and imprisoned* World Watch List is an annually published global indicator of countries where human and religious rights are being violated and those countries most vulnerable to societal unrest and destabilization. According to its research: 215 million Christians experience high levels of persecution in the countries on the World Watch List. This represents 1 in 12 Christians worldwide. North Korea is ranked number 1 (for the 17th consecutive year) as the most dangerous country for Christians. During the World Watch List 2018 reporting period: 3,066 Christians were killed; 1,252 were abducted; 1,020 were raped or sexually harassed; and 793 churches were attacked. Islamic Oppression fuels Christian persecution in 8 of the top 10 countries. THE TOP TEN COUNTRIES WHERE IT S MOST DANGEROUS TO FOLLOW JESUS: North Korea, Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan, Pakistan, Eritrea, Libya, Iraq, Yemen, Iran
11 MAJOR TRENDS IN CHRISTIAN PERSECUTION THE SPREAD OF RADICAL ISLAM: Islamic oppression is one of the most widely recognized sources of persecution for Christians in the world today and it continues to spread aiming to bring many parts of the world under Sharia law. The movement, which often results in Islamic militancy and the persecution of Christians, is expanding in Asia (Philippines, Bangladesh, Indonesia) and Africa (Egypt, Nigeria, Somalia). THE RISE OF RELIGIOUS NATIONALISM: In a resort to preserve power, insecure governments are using the country s majority religion to marginalize Christians and other religious minorities. This phenomenon has been observed in some parts of Asia with Hindu nationalism (India, Nepal) and Buddhist nationalism (Myanmar, Sri Lanka) both gaining ground. INTENSE CHRISTIAN PERSECUTION IN CENTRAL ASIA: Christian persecution in Central Asia is on the rise in countries like Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. There is a grassroots revival of Islam in Central Asia, and that means more pressure from the nationalist pro-islamic governments and within society causing increased persecution levels on two fronts. In addition to these findings, Nicaraguan churches, Catholics and Priests have increasingly come under attack. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS RESPONSES: Since 2014, the KC Christian Refugee Relief Fund has committed more than $17 million to aid persecuted Christians in Iraq, Syria and the surrounding region. In 2016, the Knights led a major advocacy and publicity campaign in support of the U.S. congressional and state department declarations of genocide, producing a nearly 300 page report on ISIS genocide against Christians and gathering 140,000 signatures for a petition calling for the declaration of the genocide. The Knights of Columbus has also advocated for U.S. government relief funds to be directed to those communities targeted for genocide by ISIS. KC support for persecuted religious minorities in the Middle East is consistent with the Order s tradition of standing for religious liberty and diversity since its founding more than a century ago. Among the projects to which Knights of Columbus funding has been committed are: Resettlement of the town of Karamles in Nineveh (Iraq), General relief in Syria, New housing units in Iraq, Assistance for Christians targeted by ISIS in Egypt, Assistance for Christian refugee programs in Lebanon and Jordan, Food programs in Iraq, Rental assistance for displaced Christians in Iraq St. Joseph KC Council supports the work done by the KC Christian Relief Fund and asks the members of St. Joseph Parish to help in this effort. Following the weekend Masses on September 22/23, members of the KCs will accept donations in the church lobbies. St. Joseph Council has pledged to match all funds raised from parishioners up to $500 with all money to be donated to the Knights of Columbus Relief Fund. Please support those around the world who are persecuted because they follow Jesus.

17 "...you will be my witnesses... to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:8) The resurrected Jesus directed the apostles with these words and, as His followers, we have the same instructions. Each year on the third Sunday of September we recognize the importance of the Church s teaching ministry and those who serve in it. The theme for Catechetical Sunday and this year s faith formation focus is Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ. Catechesis is the process of handing on the faith and involves the lifelong effort of forming people into witnesses to Christ, says the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on their website. You ll notice that the theme doesn t just say to be a witness for Jesus which has been our duty since Baptism but to enlist others to do the same. In scripture, Jesus gives us plenty of examples for how to do this, and this weekend s Gospel summarizes the conditions of discipleship: Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it (Mark 8:34b- 35). Being a Christian witness is a rough road filled with potholes, constant construction, and occasional flooding, in a world that grows increasingly hostile to the message of love offered by Jesus. What we say, what we do, and the life we lead present the face of Christ to the world. After all, our dismissal instructions at the end of Mass are to Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. The reason the apostles were credible witnesses was because they had met and knew the person of Jesus Christ, and had formed a personal relationship with him. The influence of a faithful witness cannot be underestimated. I had the privilege of being present when my uncle, Fr. Tom Schmied, died this past Monday evening after suffering painfully from bone cancer. He belonged to the Capuchin order (an offshoot of the Franciscans) and spent most of his priestly ministry as an itinerant preacher in Wisconsin and Michigan, filling in when resident priests took ill or went on vacation or sabbatical. In his final assignment in Saginaw, he ministered to the congregation right up until he was physically unable to so three weeks ago. As he took his last breaths, I bent close to his ear so he could hear what I had to say over the din of the oxygen machine. Thank you for being a witness with your life. Paul Schultz
