4 Traveling Chalice A Program of Awareness and Prayer for Vocations This week our parish gratefully acknowledges Helen Goerke as she hosts our Traveling Chalice General Announcements PARISH STAFF: As we continue to adjust to the shock of Mary Therese s announcement that she is leaving us to pursue other endeavors, we also continue to plan for life here in the parish after her departure. We all realize how irreplaceable she is there s simply no one else like her to be had! This staff change provides us with the opportunity to make some changes in our staff configuration and to prepare ourselves for the day when our cluster plan will be implemented. The plan for our parish is as follows: Vicki Kersten, who has been our parish administrative assistant, will become our full-time business administrator, assuming responsibility for much of the administration of the parish, under the pastor s direction. (This is a key component in our cluster plan, when our cluster will have one less priest.) This will allow our pastor to take on more of the pastoral responsibilities many of the things currently being done by Mary Therese. We will hire a part-time secretarial assistant to assume some of the secretarial work currently being done by Vicki. For the time being, Sabrina will take responsibility for our entire Faith Formation program at least until we are in a position financially to reinstate the other position. Angie will continue as our Coordinator of Liturgy and Music, and also take on a few things connected to the liturgy currently being done by Mary Therese. Maggie will continue to be the administrative assistant for the Faith Formation program. We may find that we need to hire someone on a part-time basis to handle some of the administrative details currently done by Mary Therese, but we ll delay this decision for the time being. This plan was developed by our Finance Council and approved by our Pastoral Council. Keep us all in your prayers as we make this important transition.

5 The Bazaar Leadership Team is looking for some good people to join us in planning to make this year s Bazaar a success. We specifically need a co-leader for Mini Raffles and someone to be Leader for Decorations. Contact Vicki at the office if interested ( ) or vlkersten@centurytel.net. Next meeting of the Bazaar Leadership team is Sunday, June 27 at 7:00 p.m. in the Ark Room. Join us. SMALL GARDEN: The small Ark Garden on parish property is being cared for by Michele Peternell. Stewardship: A Way of Life Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time As our parishes have become more diverse culturally, we have tried to make diversity a positive thing. Our liturgies and rituals are often separated by language. Our formation programs and even our community involvement, and our giving reflect separation. We often hear remarks such as those people (who speak a different language), they do not give their fair share. In the reading from Galatians today, Paul would call this biting and devouring one another. (5:15) Paul reminds us that the greatest commandment is to love our neighbor as ourselves. What a challenge that is when we often cannot get along with family or friends. As Christ s disciples, everyone who comes to our parish is by definition a brother or sister in Christ. Everyone. No exceptions. For Better, For Worse, For Good! Better a dry crust with peace than a house full of feasting with strife. Proverbs 17:1

8 Powered by Prayer Lectionary Themes for July 2010 As we celebrate the sacred texts that plot our path this month, the Lucan Jesus invites our companionship on his resolute walk toward Jerusalem. We walk with him, privileged to listen and learn as he continues to school his first followers in the way of discipleship. With every step we take and every word we hear, it becomes clear that Jesus way and that of his followers is fraught with challenges. Jesus sends forth his followers like lambs among wolves (July 4). They will be far from the security of their hometowns, where they have been supported by family and friends. Unencumbered by even the barest essentials, the disciples are to have their hands free for reaching out to others. Their empty purses help them realize that the gift of themselves in service of others is greater than any monetary donation. If they are refused in any place, they are not to give up in despair but to move on with the hope that their message will find a welcome elsewhere. Then, when they have spent themselves, they are to give an account of themselves and their efforts to Jesus, to God and to the community in whose name they are serving. Journeying further toward Jerusalem, Jesus will call on his disciples to rethink their obligations to others. We expect people to care willingly for family, friends and others who have been accepted into their inner circle, but Jesus extended those obligations to include all people, especially those in need. Even a beaten victim of robbers is to receive our care, despite the risk and the messiness. A priest might pass the victim without helping, and a Levite might do likewise, but disciples of Jesus cannot pass by without betraying the Lord to whom we belong. Moreover, Jesus chose an enemy as an exemplar of the gracious behavior that should become the identifying quality of his followers. By his actions toward a stranger, the Samaritan we call good challenges every disciple of Jesus to leave the baggage of prejudice behind and travel the journey of Jesus with hearts and hands open to all (July 11). Such unencumbered journeying may seem so impractical and idealistic that we call it impossible. If so, we need not worry; the Lucan Jesus also offers us the means to meet these challenges of discipleship. Before all else, before any mission, before any act of service, disciples of Jesus are to find their center and source of nourishment in the word of God. We encounter this truth in the uniquely Lucan Martha and Mary narrative (July 18). While Martha spent herself by seeing to the needs of Jesus and his traveling companions, Mary sat beside the Lord at his feet, listening to him speak (Luke 10:39). Martha s resentment at being burdened with all the

9 work spilled over in a complaint to Jesus. But Jesus, who was all the while teaching his disciples by word and example, held out Mary s action as exemplary. She assumed the attitude of a disciple (i.e. of one willing to be taught), and she drew near to Jesus to be fed by the word he spoke. She had, as Jesus affirmed, chosen the better part. We who would be Jesus disciples are to learn from Mary s choice that even the most ambitious agenda and the busiest day must begin with the word of God. That word, which nourishes and enlightens, will also direct the efforts of every listening disciple. On the last Sunday of the month (July 25), the Lucan Jesus will share with his followers the source of his power, the means by which we can meet the challenges of discipleship. Prayer, intimate and bold prayer; prayer that believes that God is nearer than our heartbeat, that God hears, that God loves and cares this is the resource on which disciples can draw and on which they can stake their lives. Jesus invites his followers to address God as he does, as a beloved child calls upon a loving parent. Full of trust and free of doubt, the disciple can surrender every want, every fear and every worry to the God who hears and heals all brokenness. Jesus will also offer the example of a friend who knocks at midnight. The friend is fully aware that his request and his timing are inconvenient, but he knocks nevertheless; he continues to knock until his request is granted. Through his action, the disciple learns that God is never gone fishing or out to lunch. For those who answer God s call, every moment is graced by God s absolute availability and accessibility. Thus prepared, disciples of Jesus are ready to meet anyone or anything that comes into their lives. Centered on the word and powered by prayer, we can rise to any challenge with faith, courage and hope.
