First, we are called to be generous with our encouragement and hope,. As God shows us mercy, we must be merciful to others. Second, joy is contagious! The joy we receive from doing good works not only strengthens us, it encourages others as well. WORD OF LIFE: Suicidal individuals with or without a terminal illness typically do not want to die: they want to escape what they perceive to be an intolerable situation, and they inaccurately believe that suicide is their only way out. That is not a good path. A good Catholic meddles in politics, offering the best of himself, so that those who govern can govern. But what is the best that we can offer to those who govern? Prayer!" -- Pope Francis "Pray before you vote vote in the name of God. Pray that we will once again be a nation under God. Be brave, speak out for Jesus tell the world how wonderful He is. Visit him! By your example will all men know. Words don t mean much, example speaks a thousand words. I love you but God loves you lots. Don t forget that." Mother Angelica

12 Every November 2nd on the liturgical calendar is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (also known as All Souls Day) and, in fact, the entire month is dedicated to the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Though separated from the living, we are reminded in the official book used at funeral Masses, the dead are still at one with the community of believers on earth and benefit from their prayers and intercession. (Order of Christian Funerals, #6) This hasn t always been our understanding and that s the point of this weekend s first reading from 2 Maccabees which would seem to only be at first glance an excruciating story of the torture and murder of a woman and her seven sons. God revealed in stages to His people how the afterlife worked. In this reading there is a progression in the way the brothers address the king which reveals the belief that the just will rise and evildoers will be punished. The first brother notes that a just person would rather die than sin because God will reward them. God will raise them to a new life and they will rise with their bodies restored. For those that do evil, however, there will be no resurrection to life but eternal torment. Finally, when just people suffer it is because they are being punished for their own sins. Over twenty-one hundred years later, the Catechism of the Catholic Church gives the name Purgatory to describe the disposition of a just person: All who die in God s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. (#1030) Why must we be purified? Elsewhere in the Bible we see that nothing unclean enters heaven (see Revelation 21:27) and Your eyes are too pure to look upon wickedness, and the sight of evil you cannot endure. (Habakkuk 1:13) To the question, What is the ultimate goal of your life? I will sometimes answer, Sneak into Purgatory through the back door. That will mean I am on my way to heaven, working out the temporal debt (called satisfaction) still owed to God for my plentiful (though forgiven) sins. Souls in Purgatory rely on the prayers of souls still on Earth to relieve some of their temporal suffering and speed their journey to heaven. Let us pay attention to the faithful departed especially this month and pray for them. Here is a beautiful example from Eucharistic Prayer I that you ll sometimes hear at Mass: Remember, Lord, those who have died and have gone before us marked with the sign of faith, especially those for whom we now pray. May these, and all who sleep in Christ find in your presence light, happiness, and peace. Paul Schultz

13 VII. The Mercy of God in the Mission of the Church The Church Professes the Mercy of God and Proclaims It (#13) In the face of modern society, the Church is always pondering the words of Mary which speak of mercy from generation to generation and applying them to the sufferings of the great human family. The Church has the duty to call upon the mercy of God in view of the threats to humanity today. The truth about God s mercy is expressed in the life of the Church in the Scripture readings of its daily liturgy and in Sacred Tradition. People perceive this truth by various expressions of personal and community piety too numerous to summarize. All these provide proof that mercy is the greatest of the attributes of God. Everything that brings us nearer to Christ brings us closer to the Father and the holiness of His mercy. The Church lives that mercy authentically when meditating on the Word of God and especially in the Eucharist and Confession. The celebration of the Eucharist, which is the re-presentation of the Sacrifice at Calvary, is an act of imploring God's mercy, and joining in that mercy. The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation is the individual celebration of the mercy of God, in which each person discovers the infinite love that God has for each of His children. That mercy and power of forgiveness is, indeed, infinite and only a lack of good will can limit it, a lack of readiness to be converted and to repent which can oppose this grace and truth even in the face of the witness of the Cross and Resurrection of Christ. Conversion consists always in discovering God s mercy and knowing and seeing God in this way helps us live in a state of continuous conversion. The Church professes and proclaims this conversion in order to encourage all humanity to discover the mercy that God extends through the Incarnation and the Sacraments. The contemporary Church knows it must humbly rely on the mercy of God, and that love which is more powerful than the weakness of human divisions to carry out the task of uniting all who confess Christ.
