Join us to browse through the many books and videos that our Ark Library has to offer. BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING: Camillus Ministry blood pressure screening is held this weekend in the parish center after all Masses. KC MEMORIAL MASS: A reminder that the annual Knights of Columbus Memorial Mass will be held this Tuesday, November 11 (Veteran s Day) at 6:00 p.m. NOVEMBER 15 9:00 a.m. IT S ALMOST HERE!!! 242 volunteers and just over $9,000 collected in donations so far (donations are still being accepted). We have meals to package next weekend have been ordered. If you didn t sign-up but want to participate, we still need help with filling bins, taping boxes, loading completed boxes on the trucks, registration table, etc. We are also in need of volunteers to help unload the truck on Thursday evening and cleanup on Saturday after the event. 6 Meet our Seminarians There are currently 33 men studying at various seminaries throughout the USA or in Rome, to become priests in the Diocese of Madison. Each week we will feature a seminarian in this section for you to get better acquainted with these men. We ask you to pray for them as they continue on their journey of faith. Additional information on our seminarians can be found on the Diocese YouTube site: list=pl2bjxqbqe8m3yyisz5sfeqnuteaibt2lp and the Diocese blog: Joseph Baker: I am originally from Chippewa Falls, WI. I am the youngest of four; I have an older sister and two older brothers. An important part for me growing up and my decision to eventually enter the seminary to study for the priesthood, was serving as a child. In 7th and 8th grade, I remember a coming over to the church and serving for adoration, mass, a funeral. That was important for me to see the daily life of a priest and the things that priests did from very happy moments in peoples lives to sad moments, and moments where they just pray in silence; covering the spectrum of the things that we all encounter in life. After high school I attended UW- Madison. My faith, that I was given as a child, was important because it gave me a sense of boundaries; of things I should and shouldn t do. I credit that with my time starting off at the University in a very secular culture of enjoying everything that life has to offer in excess, to keep me within reasonable bounds and giving me a certain sense of what was right and what was wrong. After my first year, I started to reflect more and more about my own life. I left room for God in that equation and maybe what God had in store for me. A big step was to then tell a priest that I was interested in the seminary. It was something I was very reluctant to do. At the end of the day, I feel I made a lot more out of it; made it a lot more painful than it should have been. But just talking to a priest and telling him I was interested and then praying on a regular basis was an important part. Eventually, with the help of this priest and working with the Vocation Director, I made the decision mid-way through my sophomore year to leave the University, to get out of that environment and go into the seminary so I could pray more and grow in virtue and grow an awareness of myself. 7 (...continued from last page) After a year and a half I received a call from the Bishop asking me to apply for a program in Washington, DC where I would take extra courses in philosophy. That ended up adding additional time on my training, but looking back,it s something that I m really happy I applied for and was accepted to,. I think philosophy is a very useful skill to reach people and bridge the gap between where they are and try to bring them to God. I have now spent some time in Rome and it s been a wonderful opportunity. One thing I ve been able to do is give tours underneath the Basilica of St. Peter and the scavo, which is a fancy word for the excavations. I ve been able to see the bones of St. Peter myself and to hold the Plexiglas box they are in. One of the bones that pilgrims can see, a very powerful reminder that the apostles weren t cartoons or figments of our imagination, is the jawbone of St. Peter. I think it s so important because it s the same jawbone that when Christ asked, Who do you say that I am?, responded You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. It s so powerful that sometimes its hard for me to even say that to people when I m giving tours. To see how moved people are and to see the church and the rock, Peter, buried underneath St. Peter s. And then up to the day with Pope Francis, the wonderful witness he s given us seminarians studying there and his concern for the poor, all sorts of social justice issues, and really going out and meeting the people of the City of Rome has just been so beautiful. 8 Over the past several years, our local Church has been blessed by the Holy Spirit with a tremendous growth in seminarians. In 2004, we had six seminarians for our diocese; today we have 33. We have prayed fervently for these seminarians; God is generously answering our prayers. This growth in vocations has exhausted our existing resources that we use to meet the costs of educating and forming our future priests. The vocation program expenses currently cost about $1.4 million to support the recruitment, education and formation of future priests for the Diocese of Madison. Priests for Our Future: The Church Is Alive! campaign seeks to raise $30,000,000 to ensure a permanent source of support for our seminarians preparing to serve us as priests. Every family in our diocese will be invited to prayerfully consider a pledge in support of this campaign. I am gratified by the generous response from our parishioners to date. Our parish has raised 32% of our $345,000 goal through 21 pledges totaling $126,100! This response of sacrificial generosity has been inspiring. In the coming weeks, you will be contacted about the campaign and invited to consider your own response. Please do not make a decision until you have been contacted and learned all the details about this historic undertaking. We are still in need of additional volunteers to help share this important campaign with their fellow parishioners. If you are able to give of your time, we would greatly appreciate it.
