No, I tell you, but rather division. Luke 12:51 Living a stewardship lifestyle means stepping out of our comfort zone when needed. Many of us like to play it safe, not cause waves, stay in the middle of the road. In today s world we are called to be informed and take a stance for life, marriage and religious liberty. WORD OF LIFE: The Church always advances between the cross and the resurrection, between persecutions and the consolations of the Lord. This is the path: those who take this path do not go wrong. 8 In a recent article in the July 28 issue of the Catholic Herald, columnist Fr. Tadensz Pacholczyk addressed the practice of cremation in our Catholic funeral practice. I thought it would be good to emphasize some of his points. For Catholics, cremation is considered an acceptable form of handling the human body after death, although as noted in the Order of Christian Funerals, does not enjoy the same value as burial of the body The Church clearly prefers and urges that the body of the deceased be present for funeral rites, since the presence of the body better expresses the values which the Church affirms in its rites. In a 2000 pastoral letter to the faithful in the LaCrosse Diocese, Cardinal Burke pointed out problematic practices that have cropped up with cremation. With the growing practice of cremation, there has also developed a certain lack of care for the cremated remains of the dead. Those who are arranging the funeral rites should see that the cremated remains are interred or entombed at the earliest possible time. It is NOT PERMITTED to scatter remains over a favorite spot or keep them in one s house or place other than a cemetery. Also the cremated remains of one person may not be mixed with the cremated remains of another deceased person or divided up into other vessels or pieces of jewelry. We have an obligation to respect the remains of the dead, even in their ashen state. Another reason to bury cremains in the earth or inter them in a mausoleum is to establish a particular place where people can come and pay their respects or pray for the soul of the deceased. The burial site serves as a point of reference and connection to the embodiment of that individual. By keeping a loved ones ashes at home on a shelf or in a closet or attic easily becomes a way to downplay their human dignity, tempting us to treat the remains as just another item to be moved around like other trinkets. It can be helpful to encourage family members and others who are involved

9 with cremains to think about askes in a manner similar to how we would think about a full body. Would we keep a casket and corpse at home for a few weeks? If not, then we shouldn t do the same with someone s ashes. The sacred memory of our departed family and friends calls us to carefully attend to their remains with authentic and objective gestures and respect. ~~Fr. Dave THANK YOU!!! On behalf of the Milton Food Pantry, I would like to give a huge thank you to everyone who contributed either school items or a monetary donation for our school supply distribution. St. Mary s response was unbelievable. Your participation helped to save the Pantry in both money and time shopping. In the past, it would cost us as much as $ just for supplies. This year we hwill have spent ZERO! Thanks to your generosity, our students will have all their needed school supplies and a certificate for a new pair of shoes. What a nice way to give these students a great start for a successful school year! Thanks again! Gail Slepekis Milton Food Pantry Chairman CODE: 7AH4V4 Have you checked out Formed.org recently? 15 I. He who sees me sees the Father (cf. Jn. 14:9) The Revelation of Mercy (#1) We begin our look at Pope John Paul II s seminal work on mercy, Dives in Misericordia. It was issued as an encyclical, which is a specific category of papal document and considered as a kind of letter concerning some aspect of Catholic doctrine. Encyclicals are typically given Latin titles based on its first few words. In this case, it begins with St. Paul s words to the congregation in the city of Ephesus, pointing out the generosity of God s plan of redemption from transgressions and sins that makes us newly created people in Christ: But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved (Ephesians 2:4-5) Teaching documents released from the Vatican often have numbered sections to use as a reference. They are usually called paragraphs even if the content is lengthy. Dives in Misericordia also has titled divisions to further categorize the material. That is what you see at the top of the page. Let s start, then, with paragraph #1. Rather than the master and slave type of relationship experienced throughout the Old Testament, Jesus reveals God to us as a Father and further declares himself to be an image of His Father. Pope John Paul II uses this to state his goal in this introductory portion. He wishes to build upon this truth expressed unchangingly throughout the Gospels and Church Tradition up to, and including, the teaching of the Second Vatican Council ( ) and his preceding encyclical, Redemptor Hominis. Specifically, he identifies the Church s mission as both concentrated on us as humans and on God as the central aspect to our existence. The world of today at best wants to separate mancenteredness and God-centeredness even putting them at odds with each other and at worst eliminates God altogether in favor of touting human achievement through our own hard work alone. Only by approaching the Father and His love and developing a more mature relationship can we understand who we are as humans. Only then can we see that Christ fully reveals man to himself and brings to light his most high calling.

16 HOLY NAME SEMINARY ALUMNI: As we approach the Grand Opening of Holy Name Heights on August 18, a group of alumni and former faculty are attempting to find as many Holy Name Seminary Alumni as possible for the grand opening and other events. If you are a Holy Name Seminary Alumnus, please consider going to the following site tinyurl.com/j7qgh4q and take a brief survey, or call and let Jill Driscoll know that you would like to be added to an alumni list. Also, please lass this on to any Holy Name Alumni that you know!! KATIE LEDECKY Olympian Gold Medalist My Catholic faith is very important to me. It always has been and it always will be. It is part of who I am and I feel comfortable practicing my faith. It helps me put things in perspective. I do say a prayer or two before any race. The Hail Mary is a beautiful prayer and I find that it calms

17 Dulia This is what we mean when we say veneration. It is honor paid to the saints and angels in heaven. This is what we are doing when seek their intercession with God. Venerating the saints does not detract from the glory given to God, since whatever good they possess is a God-given gift. Why do you Catholics worship Mary and the saints? Worship is reserved for God alone! Have you ever heard this or a similar accusation? The questioner is correct: God alone is to be worshipped. We as Catholics make the distinction, however, between worship and veneration. The Church teaches that there are three types of honor which are due to those who are holy. They are technical terms with Greek names, so strap those seatbelts tight and let s go along for a ride! Latria This is what we mean when we say worship. This is adoration which is due to God alone. It is reverence directed exclusively to the Holy Trinity. Hyperdulia This falls substantially below latria, but is higher than dulia. It is special veneration due to the Blessed Virgin Mary. We give her this high honor because she is unique amongst all God s creation. She has a role, particular only to her, in the mystery of Redemption, and receives exceptional gifts of grace from God which make her preeminent among the saints. Finally, it is good to understand that the dulia we give to the saints and hyperdulia which we give to Mary is ultimately honor given to God. So, in the end, God gets all the glory anyway. Paul Schultz
