5 Stewardship: A Way of Life Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide today whom you will serve...as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15 When we commit to serve the Lord, we must be willing to become a partner in the work of the Lord. A partner is a person who invests their time, talent and treasure. If we say we serve God, we must actually do something and not merely talk about it! Please keep these parishioners and family members in your prayers: Jim Jenkins Jeff Kneiert Austin Martin Julie Miller Scot Nelson Val Pakes Gayle Reed Kathy Roberts Brett Urban Ed Windle WORD OF LIFE: Set me a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; For Love is strong as Death. 8 CREATED FOR JOY 2226 Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the child's earliest years. This already happens when family members help one another to grow in faith by the witness of a Christian life in keeping with the Gospel. Family catechesis precedes, accompanies, and enriches other forms of instruction in the faith. Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God. The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privileged place for the catechesis of children and parents. 10 Shechem would later become the capital of the northern tribes after the nation united under King David divided into the Kingdom of Judah to the north and the Kingdom of Israel to the south with Jerusalem as its center (1 Kings 12). Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem The city of Shechem is an important location in Bible history. It is a narrow mountain pass. Because of this geography, Shechem controlled all roads and traffic in the area. Shechem was the first city Abram came to (Genesis 12:6) after the Lord directed him to the land where God would make of him a great nation and blessings to his offspring for generations. There Abram built an altar to the Lord. Abram s grandson Jacob also built an altar dedicated to the God of Israel (Genesis 33:18-20) at Shechem and dug a well to access groundwater for the many animals he tended. This is the same well in the New Testament where Jesus offered the woman from Samaria living water to drink (John 4:4-42). Moses brought the nation of Israel out of their slavery in Egypt to the edge of Canaan, the land promised to them by God. Joshua completed the conquest of Canaan by first defeating five kings of the Amorites (Joshua 10:10) who were occupying the territory, then driving out more Amorite kings beyond the Jordan River (Joshua 11:8). The people assembled at Shechem and Joshua led them to renew their relationship with God (called a covenant). Here Joshua reminded Israel of all the benefits they had enjoyed at the hand of God, from the call of Abram to the liberation from Egypt to the possession of the Promised Land. To worship the true God, Joshua challenged, is to abandon the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. In other words, the choice was theirs whether to follow the culture they lived in and be loyal to their priorities or to pursue the God who loves them and accompanies them even in their darkest times. Sounds like the same decision we need to make for ourselves today, doesn t it? Paul Schultz

11 Since its inception by Saint John Paul II in 1994, the World Meeting of Families has strengthened the sacred bonds of families across the globe. Held every three years it is the world s largest Catholic gathering of families. Each World Meeting of Families has a theme that energizes and enlivens the event while adding great depth of meaning to our understanding of families. The eighth edition will be held in Philadelphia from September with an anticipated visit from Pope Francis. The theme is Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive, emphasizing the impact of the love and life of families on our society. A document of religious instruction on family life has been prepared under this title. Each week for the next ten weeks, our parish will explore each chapter from this catechism, with reflections developed by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia s Office for the New Evangelization. You can order a copy of this beautifully illustrated catechism (or look through one in our parish library) and learn about the World Meeting of Families at WorldMeeting2015.org. There is also a pamphlet in the rack on the wall near the church entrance with more information that you can take home to read. parenting relies on the same rationale as sacramental marriage: love in the shape of service, sacrifice, trust, and openness to God s will. If and when a marriage is blessed with children, love orients parents to their children s education and spiritual formation. Jesus said to his disciples Let the children come unto me, and it is the responsibility of all Catholic adults to shepherd children into a relationship with God and the people of God. The whole parish should be involved in supporting marriages, families and children. We build the future of our society child by child, family by family. Vatican II called the family a domestic church, and the little church of the family takes its orientation from the faith and mission of the larger Church. It is a mother s and a father s responsibility to be with children at home and in church, and to pray together regularly. Children will learn the faith only when they are taught. The way a family responds to adversity, or gathers for meals, or makes financial decisions and sets priorities - these and many other aspects of home economics shape the values and identities of our children. Love is our mission because even in the middle of our humble daily routines, Catholics live with a bold and glorious purpose. - Dr. Christopher C. Roberts, editor, Love is Our Mission Preparatory Catechism Chapter 5: Creating the Future Sexual intimacy between a man and a woman raises the possibility of children. There are many other honorable relationships which include degrees of commitment and affection, but marriage has a unique mission: to integrate the fertility of male and female with the fidelity of God s covenant. 12 Feast day of St. Monica: August 27 Feast day of St. Augustine: August 28 On Aug. 27, one day before the feast of her son St. Augustine, the Church honors St. Monica, whose holy example and fervent intercession led to one of the most dramatic conversions in Church history. Monica was a Christian, but her husband Patricius was a pagan and a man of loose morals. Monica's virtues and prayers, however, converted him, and he was baptized a year before his death. When her son, Augustine, joined the Manichean sect and went astray in faith and morals, Monica's tears and prayers for her son were incessant. She followed him to Milan, where Augustine went to teach, and there continued to storm heaven with her prayers for her son. Finally, she had the joy of witnessing St. Ambrose baptize Augustine in 387. After Augustine's conversion he distributed his goods to the poor and was ordained a priest. He was made bishop of Hippo at the age of 41 and presented the faith in a compelling and intelligent manner, while warning his flock both verbally and in writing about the danger of different heresies. After his death, through the legacy of his writings, St. Augustine became the most influential theologian in the history of Western Christianity. St. Augustine of Hippo is the patron of brewers because of his conversion from a former life of loose living, which included parties, entertainment, and worldly ambitions.
