Because of the number of students, our Mass time that morning will be switched with St. Joseph. APRIL IS NATIONAL ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH: A recent study showed that Wisconsin is the heaviestdrinking state in the country. Person for person, we have 3 times the number of taverns and the largest drinking population than any other state. If you know someone who struggles with alcohol addiction, they can turn to Hope Haven for help. Hope Haven is a program of Catholic Charities and is located in Madison. Each year our professional staff helps hundreds of people with residential alcohol and drug addiction treatment. Contact us at or for more information. Treatment programs are licensed by the State of Wisconsin and are affordable and effective. WORD OF LIFE: Assisted suicide may sound like it provides choices for individuals, but instead, it s taking choices away from people by radically weakening the promise of care and support at the end of life for terminally ill patients like me. 12 Prayer for the Church to be the Mother of Vocations ather of mercy, who gave your Son for our salvation and who strengthens us always with the gifts of your Spirit, grant us Christian communities which are alive, fervent and joyous, which are fonts of fraternal life, and which nurture in the young the desire to consecrate themselves to you and to the work of evangelization. Sustain these communities in their commitment to offer appropriate vocational catechesis and ways of proceeding towards each one s particular consecration. Grant the wisdom needed for vocational discernment, so that in all things the greatness of your merciful love may shine forth. May Mary, Mother and guide of Jesus, intercede for each Christian community, so that, made fruitful by the Holy Spirit, it may be a source of true vocations for the service of the holy People of God. Amen. From Message of His Holiness Pope Francis on the Occasion of the 53rd World Day of Prayer for Vacations, April 17, 2016

the model of our Lord Jesus Christ. (from Optatam Totius, the Decree of the Second Vatican Council on the training of priests) For a group of teens from St. Mary in Milton, St. Joseph in Edgerton, St. Pius X in Cambridge, and Oaklawn Academy, it is Confirmation Day. But this Sunday has many names. It is the Fourth Sunday of Easter, nearing the midway point of the festive Easter Season between the Solemnities of the Resurrection of the Lord and Pentecost. It is also referred to as Good Shepherd Sunday because of the Gospel reading from St. John where Jesus gives us the image of himself as a loving shepherd who cares for us, his sheep. Finally, it is the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, an occasion of worldwide prayer to God the Father instituted in 1963 by Pope Paul VI, asking him to continue to send workers for his Church (Matthew 9:38, Luke 10:2). It makes sense that these last two titles should be tied together since priests are called to be true shepherds of souls after Each year the Holy Father issues a message for the event, and for 2016 its theme is the Church as the mother of vocations. By definition, vocation means a call, an invitation by God to each person to love and serve him and his Church in a particular state or way of life. God calls us to become a part of the Church and, after we have reached a certain maturity within it, he bestows on us a specific vocation, writes Pope Francis. He notes that vocations are born and grow within the Church and are sustained by the Church. He points out that experiencing different ministries together with other members of the community will help open perspectives as we determine our vocation. The World Day of Prayer for Vocations is a day when we publicly and personally invite our own children to consider whether God may be calling them to become a priest or a religious. As some of those children are taking their faith to another level through the Sacrament of Confirmation, let us offer the prayer Pope Francis closes his message with, which can be found on the opposite page. May those who are discerning their life vocation listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd to guide them. Paul Schultz

St. Joseph Pastoral Council Elections It's that time of year again and the St. Joseph Pastoral Council elections are right around the corner! This year we will be electing two new members to the Pastoral Council, as well as the Secretary Trustee position. We are looking for energetic and passionate parishioners to help fill these very important roles in our church. What exactly is the Pastoral Council? In a nutshell, the Pastoral Council assists and consults with Father Dave about decisions regarding parish life. By working with Father Dave, they are able to develop an ongoing plan for the parish, as well as foster communication, cooperation, consideration and coordination throughout the parish as a whole. The Pastoral Council meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. and is a great way to learn more about our parish and become an active participant in its formation. The Secretary Trustee serves on behalf of the parishioners, as an advisor and counselor to Father Dave and the Pastoral and Finance Councils of the parish. This person sits on the parish corporate board and is considered a member of both the Pastoral and Finance Councils. The Finance Council meets quarterly to discuss the financial stability and monetary needs of the parish. Do you know someone in the parish that would be a great fit for either of these positions? Please nominate them by filling out a form at the back of church. Or if this sounds like something you, yes you, would like to be involved in, don't hesitate to nominate yourself. Lastly, if you're on the fence about getting involved, trust in the Lord and take a leap of faith.

CLEAN-UP DAY: Saturday, April 30, is our spring clean up of the church beginning at 8:45 a.m. We need window washers and wood polishers; cleaner provided, but please bring rags. We will also rake the grounds, so please bring rakes as well. More jobs will be listed on a sign up sheet in the vestibule of the church. This is a chance to spruce up our building and grounds and enjoy fellowship. Please join us! AND FROM EDGERTON COMMUNITY OUTREACH: Thank you for your generous donation of $ for ECO s programs and services. Your support is greatly appreciated: Sincerely, Howard Christiansen ECO Volunteer PARISH DINNER PLANNING MEETING: Our next parish dinner planning meeting will be held on Sunday, May 15 right after Mass. This meeting was originally scheduled for April 26 but has been moved to May 15.

Each candidate for the Sacrament of Confirmation this weekend is anointed on the forehead with chrism in the form of a cross. This is one of the three sacramental oils used for various church functions. They are kept in bottles that can be seen in any church, usually in their own cabinet. The Bishop blesses these holy oils for use in the coming year at the Chrism Mass which was held in our diocese at St. Maria Goretti Church in Madison on the Tuesday before Easter. Holy Oils 1) First oil is Chrism, marked with the letters: S.C. (sanctum chrisma for Holy Chrism), a mix of oil and perfume and is used at holy moments baptism, confirmation, ordination, and the dedication of a church and altar 2) Next, we have the Oil of the Sick, marked with the letters: O.I. (oleum infirmorum for Oil of the Infirm or sick). This oil is used to anoint those who are ill. 3) Finally we have the Oil of the Catechumens, marked with the letters: O.S. (oleum sanctum for Oil of the catechumens) used to anoint the Catechumens (individuals who are seeking to come into full communion with the Catholic Church)

We have completed our study of Pope John Paul II's Apostolic Exhortation, Familiaris Consortio, which explains the role of the family in the modern world. This document was the result of a 1980 Synod of Bishops which assembled to address the question of the human family and marriage. Another meeting of bishops occurred last October in Rome to discuss the theme of the vocation and mission of the family in the Church and in the contemporary world. Pope Francis has now issued his reflections on the results of this gathering in a publication called Amoris Lætitia (English title: The Joy of Love ). Given the rich fruits of the twoyear Synod process, this Exhortation will treat, in different ways, a wide variety of questions, the Holy Father writes in paragraph #7 of Amoris Lætitia. This explains its inevitable length. Consequently, I do not recommend a rushed reading of the text. The greatest benefit, for families themselves and for those engaged in the family apostolate, will come if each part is read patiently and carefully, or if attention is paid to the parts dealing with their specific needs. As with all documents circulated by the Vatican, Amoris Lætitia should be contemplated with deliberation and considered in context with the whole body of church teaching. The go-to guide for understanding church teaching is, of course, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and # , # , and # speak on the unity of man and woman and the purpose of marriage and family. The following are other resources on the same topic for further study: Gratissimam Sane ( Letter to Families ) was written by Pope John Paul II for the Year of the Family in Casti Connubii ( Chastity in Marriage ) is a 1930 encyclical by Pope Pius XI. Charter of the Rights of the Family which was addressed to governments to present foundational principles for use in formulating marriage and family policy and legislation. A Family Perspective in Church and Society, a 1988 report by the U.S. Catholic bishops. Arcanum Divinae, an encyclical letter on Christian marriage by Pope Leo XIII. Humanae Vitae ( On the Regulation of Birth ), encyclical by Pope Paul VI on the purposes of married love, the gift of fertility, and responsible parenthood.
