9 Ash Wednesday March 6 Lent 2019 begins with the observance of Ash Wednesday on March 6. The Catholic Church asks each member to preserve the penitential character and purpose of Lent by attending to the following fast and abstinence regulations. Lent Fasting and Abstinence Rules for Catholics Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays in Lent, including Good Friday. Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday and are under 59 years of age are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday Fasts: Only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted. John Peterson & Paul Jozwiak TAIZE PRAYER AT NATIVITY OF MARY, JANESVILLE: Lent is a time of retreat before the Easter celebrations. During these forty days, in communion with Christ in the desert, each Christian is called to conversion, to turn our entire being towards God. This quiet and beautiful season offers an invitation to take time apart to reflect and draw closer to God. And, Taize Prayer is a wonderful response to that invitation. This lovely, meditative prayer style combines simple and accessible music, reflective readings, and silence. Plan to be with us on Monday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. for a peaceful and enriching Lenten prayer experience.

16 Since last Monday and right up until Lent starts on Wednesday, the first readings at Mass have been taken from the book of Sirach. If you mention these scripture passages to any non-catholic you might get a blank stare. That is because these sayings of a wise man most likely don t appear in their Bible. The King James Version is the predominant Bible used by non-catholic Christians (Protestants) and it contains a total of 66 books. Pick up any Bible labelled Catholic and you ll note it has 73. Why the difference? And does it make any difference? As the young Church was spreading throughout a world that mainly spoke Greek, their sacred scriptures were adapted into this language from Hebrew and this translation is known as the Septuagint. As these were proclaimed in various far-flung churches some wacky writings got interspersed with the legitimate ones composed under divine inspiration, so by the end of the fourth century an authoritative list was ratified to nip false teaching in the bud. These books that make up the inspired and revealed word of God are called the canon of scripture or Bible canon. This stabilized the Bible readings that were read at church until Martin Luther came along in the 16th century. The former Catholic priest worked on a German language Bible translation that would eventually be published in 1534 and in the process removed seven books from the Old Testament. Gone were Tobit, Judith, Baruch, Sirach, Wisdom, First and Second Maccabees and parts of Esther and Daniel. Although these appeared in the Septuagint they were missing from the older Jewish Bible in Hebrew so he questioned their validity. (Discoveries in the caves near the site of Qumran which produced the Dead Sea Scrolls in the middle of the last century have nullified this qualm. For example, more than two-thirds of the book of Sirach has been found in the Hebrew language.) They also clashed with his developing personal theology. For this reason, Luther also wanted to get rid of James, Jude, Hebrews and Revelation from the New Testament but, ironically, this was protested by his followers. Luther appended these seven books and parts of two others to the end of his Bible and collected them under the disparaging term Apocrypha (writings not considered genuine), declaring them books which are not considered equal to the Holy Scriptures, but are useful and good to read. These same books are called Deuterocanonical (from the Greek meaning belonging to the second canon ) by Catholics and considered just as legitimate as the other 39 books of the Old Testament. Catholics have always had 73 books in their biblical canon. Protestants have decided to drop seven of these books from their Bible, including the one that contains this weekend s first reading. Sunday, March 10 Family Faith lessons will include topics about fear, lying, conflicts, the news, heroes, and nurturing marriage to become a better parent. Youth Ministry morning session meets as normal. Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. we will welcome guest speaker, Mary Kate Van Wagner, on the topic of Reconciliation. Juniors, seniors and parents are welcome to join us. On September 24th, 2018, my oldest sister, Mollie, passed away from a heroin overdose. My sister and I had a complicated relationship. I loved her, but her addiction caused a lot of pain and trauma in our family. I prayed for my sister every day, but I rarely spoke to her. I had forgiven her a long time ago, and made peace with the fact that she would probably die from her addiction. So when I did inevitably lose her, I didn t react very emotionally. I shed some tears when I first found out, and then I went back to work. When people asked how I was, I d say, I m fine, and I meant it (or so I thought).

19 you and I to collaborate with him to answer these prayers. Because a lot of people s prayers don t require some incredible miracle to answer their prayers. A lot of people s prayers just require a little bit of kindness, a little bit of courage, a little bit of generosity. And you and I? We are capable of that. We are capable of collaborating with God to answer people s prayers every day. Week 9: Collaborating With God We can collaborate with God to transform the world, one person at a time. It s time to stop making excuses and start praying intentionally to discover how we can answer the prayers of those around us with our kindness, courage, and generosity. One of the great themes of human history is God s collaboration with humanity. God wants to collaborate with you. He wants to collaborate with you, he wants to collaborate with me, he wants to collaborate with your church, and he wants to collaborate with us to transform the world. But in order to do that, we have to get beyond the biggest lie in the history of Christianity. We ve got to get beyond a lot of lies that we re constantly being taught about Christianity so we can begin to collaborate with God in a powerful way so that, with God, we can answer so many prayers with our kindness, with our courage, with our generosity. from a series of reflections titled, Overcoming the Lie by Matthew Kelly, available in video format at Dynamic Catholic. Based on his book, The Biggest Lie in the History of Christianity, your free Christmas gift from St. Mary and St. Joseph parishes. Every day, the seven billion people on this planet, they re all sending these prayers up to God. Very often, God wants
