11 Today marks the 15th World Suicide Prevention Day, an initiative of the International Association for Suicide Prevention to join with others around the world who are working towards the common goal of preventing suicide. This whole month, in fact, is recognized as suicide prevention and awareness month across the U.S. Despite the growing understanding of the mental illness often behind suicide, there s still a stigma attached to it which can leave those left behind feeling quite alone in their loss, bewilderment, and grief. How does the Catholic Church view suicide? In the section on the Ten Commandments, the Catechism of the Catholic Church discusses acts against the respect for human life which violate the fifth commandment. Suicide is addressed in # The Church teaches that suicide is a sin against love of God, love of oneself and love of neighbor. On the other hand, the Church also recognizes that an individual s moral accountability for the act of suicide can be affected by mental illness. Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide (#2282). Like all mortal sins, the action must meet three conditions in order to cost someone their salvation: 1) it must be grave or serious matter; 2) the person must know it s wrong; and 3) they must intend to commit this action. In the case of suicide, a person may not have given full consent of the will. The Church makes no judgment about the individual s relationship with God. Only God can read the depths of our soul, to know how much we love Him and how responsible we are for our actions. This is why the Church offers these words of hope to family and friends of suicide victims: We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to Him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary (meaning true or beneficial) repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives (#2283). Taking one s own life is a serious matter. A natural response is to feel responsible that we did not do enough to prevent this tragedy. Yet we just don t know their final disposition, and so we don t consider them eternally lost but continue to pray for them and place all our trust in God s mercy. Having a Mass offered for the repose of their soul, for example, can be advantageous during this time of bereavement. Those who suffer from mental health problems should not bear this cross alone. As Christians, we need to encounter them, to understand them and to bear their burdens with them. This speaks to the theme of this year s World Suicide Prevention Day, Take a minute, change a life. That goes for those left behind, too. Through our prayers and loving concern, we can be instruments of God s healing grace for grieving loved ones. A helpful resource can be found in St. Mary s parish library (aka the Ark ) by Paul Quinnett, Ph.D. titled, Suicide: the Forever Decision, for those thinking about suicide and for those who know, love and counsel them. 18 To the People of St. Mary Parish: I have been impressed with the Ark Library and all the wonderful resources that are lining the shelves of that room. I hope people are using those resources as they deepen their faith life. I would like to add another element to that lending library: films. As most of you know I have a strong love of film and every so often people will ask me to recommend films that would be viewable for families. So I will begin to put movies in the library that I have found over the years to be quality family entertainment. I will also put films in there that are faith-based and inspirational. Periodically I will list in the bulletin new titles that I have come upon and plan to add to the collection. To start off, I would like to inform you of the films that I will be placing in the lending library this week: WE BOUGHT A ZOO: Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson. This film is based on a true story. When a newspaper writer gives up a lucrative job in order to take over a small zoo out in the country, he and his children embark on a fresh beginning. Fun for all ages rating PG. EMPIRE OF THE SUN: directed by Steven Spielberg. This is an inspiring action packed epic of a small boy in a great war. The boy is Jim Graham, a young Briton with an unquenchable spirit that soars high and free above the harsh confines of a Japanese internment camp during World War II. Rated PG THE PASSION OF CHRIST: Mel Gibson's revered film about the last twelve hours of Christ's life. R rated THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION: Starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins this film based on a Stephen King story chronicles convicts in the Shawshank State Prison. R rated THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST. MATTHEW: The Pier Paolo Pasolini classic film is a gripping depiction of the life of Jesus Christ. This film departs from the traditional Hollywood epics. Pasolini's documentary style filming captures Christ's life with an impassioned soundtrack including the music of Bach and Mozart Not rated. Continued...

19 RISEN : Joseph Fiennes stars in this epic biblical story of the Resurrection of Christ told through the eyes of a non-believer Clavius, a powerful Roman military tribune. PG-13 ROMERO: Raul Julia stars in this moving look at the life of Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador. This Archbishop made the ultimate sacrifice in a passionate stand against social injustice and oppression in his country. PG-13 Fr. Dave ADULT CATHOLIC SPIRIT CLUB: Wow! Where did the summer go? Time to greet old friends at our next meeting on Wednesday, September 13 at noon at St. John Vianney Marian Hall. A potluck dinner will be served and you are asked to bring a dish to share, along with your own table service. Our opening program will feature Father Brian Dulli, who will address the topic of Human Trafficking. Some studies have shown that the State of Wisconsin ranks high in human trafficking. This is shocking and something we all shold be concerned about. Blood pressure screenings will be available from 11:30 a.m. to noon. Look forward to seeing everyone. For more information, call Ginny at MEN: Join TMI (That Man Is You) this fall for breakfast, the Catholicism video series and small group discussion. St. John Vianney, Marian Hall, Wednesday mornings beginning September 13 from 5:30-7:00 a.m. For more information, Contact Rick Cummings at teamcummings@yahoo.com or Mark Lessner at lessnermark@aol.com WOMEN S SCRIPTURE STUDY: St. John Vianney will resume their scripture study on Wednesday, September 13 at 9:00 a.m. in Marian Hall and welcome women from all parishes to join us for our weekly one hour reflections on the coming Sunday readings. Our goal is to look at the historical event described in the Old Testament first reading and the New Testament Gospel reading and ask ourselves, What does that mean to me today? Please take this opportunity to open the scriptures within a community of like-minded women. Everyone is welcome regardless of how much or how little you consider yourself to know about our scriptures. We don t attempt to leave you with answers, but hopefully leave you with questions. It s a great opportunity to meet other women, gain new friends and have a cup of coffee. We will supply what you need. Hope to see you!
