11 MARCH FOR LIFE: Why would you take a day to learn about life issues and stand in Chicago s Federal Plaza listening to speakers like Pat McCaskey, co-owner of the Chicago Bears? What can he tell you about valuing life? Do you feel you have heard the pro-life message and not much more can be said? Would you be surprised to learn that abortions are declining? That young people are more pro-life? That pregnancy centers far outnumber abortion clinics? These are causes for hope, but we need to press for greater justice! As we wait in these darkening days of winter, for the joyous coming of the birth of Jesus, do you ever ponder that millions eagerly await this celebration? And yet, less than a month after we celebrate His birth, we face the disturbing commemoration of Roe v. Wade and the death of millions upon millions of unborn babies. How do we hold both truths in our hearts? We honor Jesus in our celebration of Christmas with friends and family. That gives us strength to face the sorrows and struggles in live. As we enjoy to bright, gleaming lights of Christmas, let s also plan to shine a light on the injustice of abortion. Several groups are sponsoring a bus to the Chicago March for Life on Sunday, January 14. You are not just invited to join us, you are urged and encouraged to take a stand for life. There will be a bus pick -up in Madison and in Janesville. Make January 14 a standout day in 2018 and reserve your seat today. WHAT: Chicago March for Life WHEN: Sunday, January 14. Bus leaves Madison at 9:00 a.m., pick up in Janesville at 10:00 a.m. and return around 6:00 p.m. to Janesville and 7:00 p.m. to Madison. 12 TAIZE PRAYER AT NATIVITY OF MARY, JANESVILLE: Taize Prayer began in the little community of Taize, France during the 1940 s following the destruction of World War II. A group of religious men sought to create an ecumenical form of prayer that would foster reconciliation and peace among all people. Today, Taize Prayer is celebrated throughout the world, bringing Christians of all traditions together to sing, to hear God s words in Scripture, and to listen in silence for God s voice in their hearts. In that spirit, we gather at Nativity of Mary, Janesville as we have since February, 1998, to offer this prayer. You are invited to experience Taize Prayer with us on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. You will find it an opportunity to take a few moments from the busy-ness of your life and simply be in God s presence. Christmas is over, and now we can pause and savor the delights of the season and look ahead to a new year. Perhaps this is the time to make a difference in your prayer life. If you have thought about participating in Taize Prayer but just haven t made a commitment to do so, resolve that 2018 will be the year that you say yes to that invitation. Join us for Taize Prayer on Monday, January 8 at 7:00 p.m. As always, our time together will be a chance to un-crowd our hearts and minds and refresh our spirits. Come and bask in the light of candles and the warmth of friendship, raise your voices in simple and prayerful songs, attend to God s message in Scripture, and listen in silence for God s voice in your heart. 15 Did you know that a priest born right here in Wisconsin is the first American-born man to be declared Blessed by the Catholic Church? That is one step away from being called a saint! There was a special Beatification Mass to mark his new status in Detroit, Michigan on Nov. 18, Bernard Francis Casey was born on Nov. 25, 1870 to Irish immigrant parents on a farm near Oak Grove, Wisconsin along the Mississippi River. When he became a priest in 1904, he celebrated his first Mass at St. Joseph Parish in Appleton. Because of academic struggles in the seminary, Father Solanus (he took this name when he was admitted to the Capuchin Order) never received permission to hear confessions or preach a sermon. He was assigned to the post of Porter, or doorkeeper, one of the lowest tasks in the community. He celebrated the Eucharist each day and carried on his apostolic work with humility in a tiny office where people by the thousands visited, seeking counsel and spiritual guidance. He lived an extraordinary life of holiness and the Capuchin Friars of the Solanus Casey Center in Detroit have released a 72-minute film titled EXTRAORDINARY: Stories about Father Solanus Casey for Children. It features eleven different true stories about Fr. Solanus that showcase this humble priest s spirituality and ministry. As each story unfolds, a child colors a large drawing, eventually revealed to be an illustration of the story. It can be viewed in its entirety online and has also been broken up into 5-9 minute segments. On the Faith Formation blog, which you can access on St. Mary s website or directly at saintmarymiltonfaithformation.weebly.com, we ll post a new episode each week that you can watch, along with the featured drawing (that you could download, print off, and color yourself!) and discussion questions.

18 At the beginning of a new year, it can be beneficial to review the basics for being a Catholic in good standing. God has given the Church the authority to make laws to direct our efforts toward achieving eternal salvation, and, in addition to the biblical call to practice works of mercy (Matthew 25:41-46), the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17), the two great commandments (Matthew 22:37-40), and the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-11), has given the following obligatory laws as the basis of living a moral life as a Christian: What are the precepts of the Church? 1 They are: 1) to attend Mass on Sundays and other holy days of obligation and to refrain from work and activities which could impede the sanctification of those days; 2) to confess one's sins, receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation at least once each year; 3) to receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season; 4) to abstain from eating meat and to observe the days of fasting established by the Church; and 5) to help to provide for the material needs of the Church, each according to his own ability. The second precept originates with priests acting as mediators of forgiveness, going as far back as the third book of the Old Testament (Leviticus 19:20-22). In the New Covenant, Jesus Christ delegated authority to his ministers to act as instruments of reconciliation as well. He did this after his resurrection, when he appeared to his disciples, breathed on them and said to them, Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained (John 20:22-23). This power to forgive sins is exercised in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that this second precept ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation, which continues Baptism's work of conversion and forgiveness (#2042). It further clarifies our duty: According to the Church's command, after having attained the age of discretion (generally held to be about seven years of age), each of the faithful is bound by an obligation faithfully to confess serious sins at least once a year. Anyone who is aware of having committed a mortal sin must not receive Holy Communion, even if he experiences deep contrition, without having first received sacramental absolution (#1457). Absolution is obtained after contrition, confession, satisfaction (explain -ed in # ). Of course, this isn t to suggest that it is desirable to postpone the confession of a grave sin for a period of an entire year. This is to help us fulfill the third precept, which we will discuss next week. We also need to remember that this obligation does not fall upon those who are unable to fulfill it due to age, infirmity or some other good reason. It is not enough to simply pray to God yourself for acquittal of your sins.

19 Divine forgiveness for the sin may already have taken place; the contrition of the penitent may have been such that he or she has indeed been pardoned by God. Nevertheless, the obligation remains to submit oneself to the power and ministry of the Church in the sacrament of reconciliation 2. Confession not only confers the grace of absolution, but also the grace to avoid sin in the future. This is why would shouldn t save up only our mortal sins before partaking of this sacrament. Without being strictly necessary, confession of everyday faults (venial sins) is nevertheless strongly recommended by the Church. Indeed the regular confession of our venial sins helps us form our conscience, fight against evil tendencies, let ourselves be healed by Christ and progress in the life of the Spirit (#1458). Things that we consider valuable we take care of, don t we? If we only brushed our teeth once a year, what kind of shape would they be in (if they haven t already fallen out!)? What if we only washed our car once of year, letting the corroding salt cling to it until then? How much more valuable is our eternal soul? Pope John Paul wrote that it would be foolish, as well as presumptuous, to wish arbitrarily to disregard the means of grace and salvation which the Lord has provided and... to claim to receive forgiveness while doing without the sacrament which was instituted by Christ precisely for forgiveness" 3. Paul Schultz 1 Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, question New Commentary on the Code of Canon Law, commenting on Canons 988 and 989 3"On Reconciliation and Penance," #31 Follow-up to the first precept For further reading regarding the doctrinal foundations of this precept and how to renew this age-old tradition and teaching of the Church, seek out Pope John Paul II s Apostolic Letter called Dies Domini, subtitled On Keeping the Lord s Day Holy. For example, he writes on the importance of refraining from unnecessary labor: Through Sunday rest, daily concerns and tasks can find their proper perspective: the material things about which we worry give way to spiritual values; in a moment of encounter and less pressured exchange, we see the true face of the people with whom we live (#67). When missing Mass for a grave reason or for something over which you had no control, the pope instructs that the faithful who, because of sickness, disability or some other serious cause, are prevented from taking part, should as best they can unite themselves with the celebration of Sunday Mass from afar, preferably by means of the readings and prayers for that day from the Missal, as well as through their desire for the Eucharist (#54). One way to express a desire for the Eucharist is through an Act of Spiritual Communion, like the prayer shown below.

21 TO THE PEOPLE OF ST. JOSEPH: During the last days of advent, Mary Ann Ivey, our parish office administrator and bookkeeper experienced some medical issues that required a hospital stay. It turns out that while Mary Ann is recovering she will have to leave her job at St. Joseph. We want to thank her for her 5 years of service to our parish and hope that she recovers and goes on to do good things for others. This means that we are searching for a new office manager for St. Joseph. The meat of the job includes manning the front office of the parish: answering phones, opening the mail, scheduling masses, recording sacraments, working with Father Dave and the religious education program and the various committees of the parish. The person would need to be in the office Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. If you know of anyone who might be interested in applying for this position, please have them contact the office and submit a resume of their past work experience.
