2 Power of For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life? John 3:16 From the desk of the pastor Dear Sisters and Brothers, It is with great admiration and love for you that I write this letter. After four weeks of Advent, and with great preparation, we celebrated the Christmas season. The church in her wisdom is preparing us to become holy. The love that is manifested in the Christmas season is awesome. God becoming like us, so we can become like him. Jesus listened to the father of love. Sisters and brothers, listening demands our response. Mary listened; Joseph, Peter, James & John listened; and the list goes on. In this new year, let us listen to the voice of God. Let us pray for a spirit of obedience. May our new year resolutions lead us all to a new life conversion. Some things we can do to bring about the conversion are praying daily, reading the Bible, daily Mass, confession, praying the rosary and an act of charity. In this new year, may God uncover his face to you and your family. May God be gracious to you and your family and give you peace. P: In Christ, Fr. Anthony Abraham Pastor Page2 x Page

5 Senior Spotlight Lea Hippolyte T herep: are few in Our Lady of Mount Catholic Carmel P.O. Box Church on St. John that can recount those earlier Heart. It took me a little time to know the people. 241 Sacred St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands We used to go to the meetings for Sacred Heart and Legion of days of growth and transformation that has led us to the Mary. Many of the friends I have today I met at this church. OLMC we cherish today. It was the small friendly nature of OLMC that motivated Lea One of our oldest church members, Lea Hippolyte, born to keep participating heavily in church activities and in the January 1, 1932, on the island of St. Lucia in Dennery, recounts upkeep of the church. During her younger days at the church, those days when OLMC was just a little red building with no Lea prepared meals for priests and helped at the Tuesday hall or priest of its own. It was in that time of movement and growth on St. John that Lea found soup kitchen along with other parishioners. Her other ministries included being a cantor; singing in the choir; serving as a Eucharistic herself there with her now late husband Minister; cleaning the church with the Joseph Hippolyte, whom she married help of her husband Joseph; helping on Dec. 19, 1956, in the cathedral in organize the first church bazaar, and Castries. Lea was baptized in the whatever else she was able to help in Dennery, St. with in the church. It was only in Lucia after more than 40 years It was January 1969 when Lea of continuous service when her came to St. John to join her husband fell ill, did she truly step husband, Joseph. As we sat in the down and let the new generation living room of her home in Enighed, take up these tasks. she recounted the first day she looked These days, 87-year-old Lea still attends for the church. 7:30 a.m. Mass every Sunday but is more I knew there was a church. Joe told me where it was, and I walked from the Creek and I got there, Lea said. It was not church time, but I wanted to know where it was. The first person she met was Bernice Boynes. When I was going in, I saw Ms. B. She was right across the street. She was the first person I met. After we introduced ourselves and she brought me in and showed me all over. She told me there was Mass every Sunday morning at OLMC and the priest, [Father than happy to see a younger generation take over. There are new people now, younger people. Lea approves of the direction that the church is going and is proud of her parish. From the time we got this priest [Father Anthony], he has respected me. He has done a lot of good for me because every Tuesday morning he used to come and visit Joe when he took sick. He didn t even ask me. He did that until Joe was gone. Roddy] would say a special Mass for people working at Caneel January 2019 makes 50 years since Lea first saw that little Bay, Lea said. Those Masses were held at 6 a.m. on Sundays red building in the middle of Cruz Bay that would become her for Caneel Bay employees that had to start their shift by spiritual home. 7 a.m. Lea worked at Caneel Bay for 23 years. Lea is the mother of four children and has 10 grandchildren. Whenever she had a day off, Lea would attend Mass at OLMC as well as the first Friday of the month as a member of the Article written by Aisia Crooke Page 5 Page 7

6 Michael Jackson Sr.'s Ministry with Catholic Charities Fr. Yacob Fopa Lonfo Fr. Yacob Fopa Lonfo was born in He came from a family of six. Father Yacob comes from Cameroon, Africa. He was ordained to the sacred priesthood on Dec. 15, 2018, by Bishop Herbert Bevard at Sts. Peter & Paul Cathedral. Fr. Anthony: Father, when did you know God was calling you to the priesthood? Fr. Yacob: After high school, I wanted to dedicate my whole life to God. Fr. Anthony: What advice would you give to a young person discerning the vocation toward the priesthood? Fr. Yacob: Commit to it. It must not be an afterthought. To serve God is the best thing. The reward God gives is the best. Fr. Yacob is presently serving at Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral on St. Thomas, V.I. Msgr. Jerome Feudjio, the vocation director of the Diocese of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, is instrumental in helping men on their journey to the sacred priesthood, including Fr. Yacob. Let us keep our priests in prayer. St. John Vianney, patron saint of priests, pray for them! My name is Michael Anthony Jackson Sr. I have been married for 36 years to my beautiful wife, Cheryl Boynes-Jackson. We have a son and daughter and five grandchildren. I am a convert to Catholicism. I had a desire to be more active in the Catholic faith. This desire led me to become an acolyte. It also increased my love for the faith. Serving with the three Deacons of our parish inspired me to pursue the vocation of a deacon. Presently I am installed as a lector. I am a case manager with Catholic Charities on St. John. We serve the homeless and needy here on St. John. At present, we serve about 100 meals per day, Monday to Friday, which includes breakfast and lunch. On October 28, 2018, I was deployed to Florida for two weeks to assist hurricane victims affected by Hurricane Michael. I was put in charge of the disaster distribution center in Quincy, Florida. There we served 200 families. This number increased daily. I was able to bring my experience and love to my sisters and brothers in need. Working with Catholic Charities has helped me to become more sensitive to the needs of others. Page 6

7 OLMC Prayer Meeting OLMC St. Therese Chapel has purchased land in Coral Bay (image below) to build a chapel, which will be named, St. Therese. Donations are being accepted. To make a donation, make checks payable to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, memo line: Coral Bay chapel. OLMC Prayer Meeting is held on Thursdays at 7 p.m. We try to have a topic every Thursday where someone will give a teaching or talk. In the prayer meeting, everyone is invited to give thanks to the Lord for what he has done for them. We also have a prayer team group that assembles before the prayer meeting. Normally there are about 25 to 30 people in attendance. Our goal is to have more people to join us. No matter who you are, we welcome everyone. You are invited to come and make a good change where we all can give God all he deserves. Prayer meeting lasts about an hour and a half. Our prayer team can also pray with you one-on-one or a personal prayer. Also, if you would like to be part of our prayer group, please feel free to let us know. Deacon Cassius Mathurin is the president of the Prayer Group. Mission Statement will provide support to all through the liturgy, worship and education. We pledge to provide our parish community and our visitors a prayerful experience in an environment of friendliness and courtesy. We are committed to proclaim the Word of God in unity and love towards each other. Our mission is: Evangelization: to evangelize ourselves, our families, our parish and our local community. Liturgy: to celebrate our faith with joy through vibrant and prayerful worship. Education: to educate and become educated in the truths of the Gospel and in the formation of conscience. Service: to reach out in love and service to those in need. Stewardship: to develop the material, financial and human resources of the Church and to manage them as faithful servants.
