3 Pastor s Column October We Are the World! This weekend we celebrate World Mission Sunday. First approved by Pope Pius XI in 1926 and organized by the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith, this day is celebrated in all local Churches as the feast of catholicity and universal solidarity so that Christians the world over will recognize their common responsibility with regard to the evangelization of the world. The word Catholic means universal, and it was Jesus himself who, as he was about to ascend to the Father instructed his disciples, Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age (Matthew 28:19-20). Pope Francis, in his message this year, highlighted that 2016 is the 90th Anniversary for World Mission Sunday. It is a moment of profound solidarity where the whole Church can financially care for Christian communities in need and support the proclamation of the Gospel even to the ends of the earth. Our Holy Father wrote, On this World Mission Sunday, all of us are invited to go out as missionary disciples, each generously offering their talents, creativity, wisdom and experience in order to bring the message of God s tenderness and compassion to the entire human family. One of the reasons I was given for being sent to do my seminary studies in Rome was that I might experience firsthand the universality of the Church. At the Pontifical North American College, I lived with seminarians from all over the United States and from some other English speaking countries like Canada and Australia as well. And at the Gregorian University where I did my Theology and Canon Law studies, I learned together with people from the entire world. Little did I realize then how helpful that would be to me as a priest back home here in Brooklyn. At my previous assignment at St. Mary, Mother of Jesus parish in Bensonhurst, I got to put my Italian to use, celebrating Mass occasionally in that language for what is still a fairly sizable, if somewhat shrinking, population in that neighborhood. But coming here to St. Mark and St. Margaret Mary in Sheepshead Bay and Manhattan Beach, I was amazed at the ethnic and cultural diversity that make up our parishes and school. As the map in the hallway across from the Principal s Office in St. Mark Catholic Academy so aptly puts it, We Are the World. There are pins in 57 different countries representing the place of origin of the families of our students, teachers and administrators. What a great time it is to come together as a parish family this Sunday to celebrate our unity in diversity with our International and Multi- Cultural Festival, beginning at the 12:30 PM Mass and continuing afterward in the St. Mark Catholic Academy auditorium/gym. In a nation and world filled with so much anxiety, mistrust, and sectarian violence, we are a model and a beacon for how people of different nationalities, races, cultures, and faiths can live together in peace and harmony. As Pope Francis said, Faith is God s gift and not the result of proselytizing; rather it grows thanks to the faith and charity of evangelizers who witness to Christ. As they travel through the streets of the world, the disciples of Jesus need to have a love without limits, the same measure of love that our Lord has for all people. We proclaim the most beautiful and greatest gifts that he has given us: his life and his love. May we continue to bear witness to Christ s life and love here in Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach, and beyond. Fr. Bob

We thank you for the privilege of being able to organize ourselves politically and of knowing that political loyalty does not have to mean disloyalty to you. We thank you for your law, which our Founding Fathers acknowledged and recognized as higher than any human law. We thank you for the opportunity that this election year puts before us, To exercise our solemn duty not only to vote, but to influence countless others to vote, and to vote correctly. Lord, we pray that your people may be awakened. Let them realize that while politics is not their salvation, their response to you requires that they be politically active. Awaken your people to know that they are not called to be a sect fleeing the world but rather a community of faith renewing the world. Awaken them that the same hands lifted up to you in prayer are the hands that pull the lever in the voting booth; That the same eyes that read your Word are the eyes that read the names on the ballot, and that they do not cease to be Christians when they enter the voting booth. Awaken your people to a commitment to justice To the sanctity of marriage and the family, To the dignity of each individual human life, And to the truth that human rights begin when human lives begin, and not one moment later. Lord, we rejoice today that we are citizens of your kingdom. May that make us all the more committed to being faithful citizens on earth. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

5 Our students in grades 3 8 have been very busy taking the mandated TerraNova Exams. The Fourth Grade class has been learning about the Four Cardinal Virtues. They were asked to write about what each virtue meant. Temperance means to not say something hurtful or anything that is unacceptable. Temperance is how you should act. Temperance is a great example to set for people. I live this virtue by listening when others talk. Temperance also means turning off devices when talking with others. Bullies need to learn temperance and the wisdom of using words properly. By Maximillion Gray Prudence means that you follow rules and make good decisions. To have prudence you shouldn t disobey an adult. Prudence is important to live by because it will help you not get into trouble because you will make good decisions and have a better life. Prudence is a great example to set for other people. By Grace Madden Justice means to stand up for yourself or someone else. You should not lie and always tell the truth. Justice means to be honest and to not steal. I live this virtue by being truthful and standing up for myself and being helpful to others. I treat others the way I want to be treated. Everyone should live this virtue. By Evan Nikolaev Fortitude means to act bravely in the face of troubles and fears. It also means to speak up for someone who is in trouble. It also means to act when you see someone who is being bullied, especially when they can t speak for themselves. I live this virtue by sticking up for my friend Deanna and my little sister. I stick up for my friends. I believe this is a very important virtue and that is why I choose to live it. THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA) is a process by which people who are considering membership in the Catholic Church come together for weekly classes to experience a journey of faith and share in the Christian Community. FOR WHOM IS IT INTENDED? 1. Unbaptized adults who wish to learn more about the faith and Christian life, with the possibility of becoming a Catholic Christian. 2. Baptized Christians from other denominations who would like to learn more about, and join the Catholic Church. 3.
