3 Pastor s Column March 24 25, 2018 He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end. This weekend we celebrate Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. The Roman Missal states, On this day the Church recalls the entrance of Christ the Lord into Jerusalem to accomplish his Paschal Mystery. This marks the beginning of Holy Week which will culminate in our celebration of the Sacred Triduum: The Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday, the Celebration of the Lord s Passion on Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night. According to the Ceremonies of the Liturgical Year, At the summit of the Church year, the three great days of the Easter Triduum encompass the Paschal Mystery and draw us into the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus our Savior. With his disciples, we enter the upper room to celebrate the Passover. We accompany him to watch at his agony in Gethsemane, and then we follow him through the halls of judgment to his bitter Passion. We take his way of sorrow that leads to Calvary and death on a cross. Then we assist at his burial in the rock tomb. We wait in solemn vigil until he rises again, in our human flesh, glorious and immortal. So we look in hope to our compassionate High Priest returning to the Father and taking us to glory with him in his Mystical Body, the Church. These complex liturgies celebrated once a year require much preparation and practice. As Deacon Paul was instructing our altar servers in their respective duties for the Washing of Feet during the Mass of the Lord s Supper, one to hold the pitcher of water, one to move the basin underneath the feet to catch the water, one to hold the basket of towels to dry the feet, one to hold the basket to collect the wet towels, he told them, Father should not have to hold anything. Immediately I was reminded of last year when on Tuesday of Holy Week I took a fall and fractured my shoulder so that this Father truly could not hold anything, but with the love, help and support of so many people was nonetheless able to preside at this beautiful liturgy. The Mass of the Lord s Supper has a little bit of everything. The Old Testament reading from the Book of Exodus contains the Lord s instructions to Moses as to how the Passover meal was to be celebrated. And then in the New Testament reading, St. Paul recalls how during such a meal Jesus instituted the great gift of his Body and Blood in the Holy Eucharist as a way to celebrate his Death and Resurrection which would soon follow, and also the gift of the Priesthood, so that the Eucharist could be made present throughout the rest of human history. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. But it is in the Gospel reading where all of this is put into action as St. John recounts Jesus washing the disciples feet. As St. John writes, He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end. Our Holy Father Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI once said, When the Lord of the world comes and undertakes the slave s task of foot washing - which is an illustration of the way he washes our feet all through our lives we have a totally different picture. God doesn t want to trample on us, but kneels down before us so as to exalt us. The mystery of the greatness of God is seen precisely in the fact that he can be small Only when power is changed from the inside, and we accept Jesus and his way of life, whose whole self is there in the action of foot-washing, only then can the world be healed and the people be able to live at peace with one another. The model Jesus gives us is the model of self-giving love. He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end. This Holy Week, may you and your loved ones truly come to know and experience God s great love for you, and may he give all of us the grace, the strength, and the courage to put that love into practice by loving and serving one another. -Fr. The wars, unrest, & instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these times of crisis this collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees. When you contribute, you become an instrument of peace & join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Holy Land. PLEASE BE GENEROUS. COME PRAY WITH US TENEBRAE SERVICE Palm Sunday march 25 6:00 PM This service consists of 7 Readings from Scripture & Sacred writings Especially included in the Readings is the Book of Lamentations. There are as many candles as there are readings plus one Christ Candle. After each reading, the reader then puts out one of the candles until the service comes to an end. At the end of the service (after the last reading), the last candle is extinguished and the Christ Candle is then either hidden or put out and the whole church is bathed in darkness. At the end of the Tenebrae either the congregation leaves in silence without speaking or they will beat the pews to make a great noise (symbolic of the earthquake after Jesus death). The noise-making continues until the Christ Candle is taken back to the Altar. Don t miss this beautiful event! MOVIE NIGHT Wed. WAY OF THE CROSS OVER THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE On Good Friday, March 30, 2018, Communion and Liberation will sponsor the Way of the Cross over the Brooklyn Bridge. Participants will congregate for the first station at St. James Cathedral, Brooklyn, at 10:00 am. After a station on the Brooklyn Bridge, the procession will follow the cross to a third station at City Hall Park in Manhattan, and a fourth station near Ground Zero. The final station will be at St. Peter s Church on Barclay Street, concluding at 1:30 pm. At each station, there will be readings from the Passion, a meditation, a reflection and hymns.
