3 Pastor s Column January 12-13, 2019 He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. This weekend the liturgical season of Christmas draws to a close with our celebration of the Baptism of the Lord. The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by John the Baptist is such a significant event that it is recalled and emphasized by all the Evangelists in their respective Gospels. It was held in great importance by the apostolic community because that event began the public ministry of Jesus. The Church Fathers also dedicated great interest to this feast which is the most ancient of all except for Easter. In October 2002 Pope St. John Paul II s Apostolic Letter, Rosarium Virginis Mariae, introduced the Luminous Mysteries to the Rosary, the first of which is Jesus Baptism in the Jordan by John. In it, our Holy Father of happy memory wrote, Here, as Christ descends into the waters, the innocent one who became sin for our sake, the heavens open wide and the voice of the Father declares him the beloved Son, while the Spirit descends on him to invest him with the mission which he is to carry out. But this feast is not meant to just celebrate an historical event that took place almost 2000 years ago. As Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI points out, there is a strict relationship between the Baptism of Christ and our own baptism. At the Angelus in St. Peter s Square on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord in 2007 Pope Benedict said, At the Jordan the heavens opened to indicate that the Savior has opened the way of salvation and we can travel it thanks to our own new birth of water and Spirit accomplished in Baptism. In it we are inserted into the Mystical Body of Christ, that is, the Church, we die and rise with him, we are clothed with him, as the Apostle Paul often emphasized. The commitment that springs from baptism is therefore to listen to Jesus: to believe in him and gently follow him, doing his will. In this way everyone can tend to holiness, a goal that, as the Second Vatican Council recalled, constitutes the vocation of all the baptized. Baptism is the most important of all the sacraments because it is the gateway to the rest of the sacraments. Baptism is a ritual act that all Christians of all traditions avail themselves of. In fact, it s a sacramental action that the Church even recognizes as valid, when properly administered, regardless of the church in which it s received. This is true even if the baptizer isn t even a Christian or religious at all. Celebrating the Sacrament of Baptism is one of the most enjoyable things I get to do as a Priest. I love telling parents and godparents that just as the Spirit descended upon Jesus at His Baptism, so does God s Spirit come upon and dwell within their child or godchild from the day of their Baptism. And although we may not audibly hear His voice, I am sure God looks down from heaven, smiles, and says, This is my beloved son, or this is my beloved daughter, with whom I am well pleased. Our Holy Father Pope Francis also spoke about the Sacrament of Baptism at an audience he gave in He said, It is in virtue of Baptism that, free from original sin, we are grafted into the relationship of Jesus with God the Father. Our Holy Father emphasized that Baptism is not a formality! It is an act that profoundly touches our existence. A baptized person and a nonbaptized person is not the same! With Baptism we become immersed in that inexhaustible source of life that is the death of Jesus, the greatest act of love in all of history; and thanks to this love we can live a new life, no longer at the mercy of evil, of sin and death, but in communion with God and with each other as brothers and sisters. There is an expression that goes: Today is the first day of the rest of your life. The day of our Baptism is, in a very real sense, the first day of the rest of our eternal life. 5 As we are approaching the middle of the Second Trimester, we are busy planning for Catholic Schools Week. The theme this year is Catholic Schools Learn, Serve, Lead, Succeed. In today s world, parents may wonder why they should send their children to a Catholic School.
