3 Pastor s Column September 2 3, 2017 My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. It s hard to believe, but the Labor Day weekend is here, marking the traditional end of the summer vacation season. I hope everyone had some time for rest and relaxation. We at the parish and at St. Mark Catholic Academy have been busy getting ready for a new Pastoral Year and School Year to begin. Father Mike has settled in nicely. He and I have been interviewing candidates to fill our St. Mark Music Director vacancy created by Pat Marvello s retirement. And along with Father Sergiy, the three of us are eagerly looking forward to the return of our teachers and students next week. As I tell our students often, we miss them when they are not here. We have a class at daily Mass each day, so that every student in grades one through eight has the opportunity to encounter Jesus in a special way each week. Our school is a great blessing. It brings life and vitality to the parish. Since 1924, first St. Mark School and now St. Mark Catholic Academy has provided a quality faith based education and has been faithful to its mission to instill in the future leaders of our community and our society Christian values taught in the Catholic tradition. We are extremely proud of the academic achievements and success of our students, but even more importantly our school s nurturing and caring environment allows them to reach their full potential as the loved, beautiful, and unique children of God that He has created them to be. In our Gospel reading this weekend Jesus tells us that there is nothing more important in life than the salvation of our soul. He says, What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father s glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct. Man s goal does not consist in accumulating worldly goods or enjoying the good things of life. Those things can never fully satisfy us. We will always want a bigger house, a nicer car, a more luxurious vacation. It s not that these things are bad. It s just that they cannot be our final end but rather a way or means to achieve our end. As St. Augustine, whose feast day we celebrated earlier this week once famously said, Our hearts are restless until they rest in God. Our last end, our ultimate goal, whether we realize it or not, is God himself. It is easy to become confused, distracted and lost by listening to the lies of this world. St. Paul warns us in our second reading, Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. And Jesus himself shows us the path we must take to reach our hoped for destination denying ourselves, saying no to selfishness and self-centeredness, to attachments to material goods and comforts, and to sin, and taking up our cross. Every good gift that we have comes from God: our life, our family, our intellect, and our possessions. But no earthly, impermanent good can ever compare with the Creator and Giver of those goods and our soul s eternal salvation with Him in heaven. Thus we proclaim in our Responsorial Psalm, My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. So as we return to school and work, let s pray for the children in our school and in our religious education program, and for those who teach and form them. Help us celebrate our past and provide for our future by participating in and supporting our first ever St. Mark Homecoming on September 30 th, the details of which can be found in a flier in this weekend s bulletin, and please spread the word to your family members and friends. 5 Up next to the right of James the Less is a saint who was married and had two sons before entering the convent, and who is known for her great devotion to the Passion of Christ. ST. RITA OF CASCIA, Widow Patroness of Impossible Cases May 22 Born in Spoleto, Italy, in 1381, Rita begged her parents from an early age to allow her to enter the convent. Instead they arranged a marriage for her. She was a good wife and mother, though her husband had a violent temper, and often mistreated her. He also handed down his evil ways to their two sons. Throughout her difficulties, Rita performed her familial duties faithfully and prayed and received the sacraments frequently. After nearly twenty years of marriage, her husband was fatally stabbed by an enemy of his. Before he died, he repented of his sins, because Rita prayed for him. Their two sons also died shortly afterwards. Left without her family, she focused on prayer, fasting, a variety of penances, and performing good works. She eventually acted on her childhood desire to enter religious life and was admitted to the convent of Augustinian nuns at Cascia in Umbria, Italy. As Sr. Rita, she lived a life of perfect obedience and manifest charity. As her devotion to the Passion of Christ grew more and more pronounced, she experienced an extraordinary occurrence. In one instance while praying before a Crucifix she requested to Christ, Please let me suffer like You, Divine Savior. Suddenly one of the thorns from the Crucifix struck her on the forehead, leaving a deep wound which did not heal. It caused her much suffering until her passing from this life on May 22, St. Rita is often depicted with a Crown of Thorns hovering over her head, clutching a Crucifix, with the wound on her forehead emerging from her habit. PRAYER: God, through the prayers of St. Rita, may we learn to bear our crosses in life in the same spirit in which she bore hers. Amen. BACK TO SCHOOL PRAYER God of knowledge & wisdom, bless all students young & old, as they begin a new school year. Help them discover & develop the gifts you have given. As they grow in knowledge, help them also to grow in kindness & compassion, learning respect for themselves and others. We ask your blessing on parents, teachers and all those who care for students. Strengthen them to surround our students with encouragement, support & love. Remind us that wherever we go, you are always with us. Fill us all with the joy of learning so that we may be better equipped to be your servants. Amen
