3 Pastor s Column February 15 16, 2014 Mardi Gras: Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler! Let The Good Times Roll! The Mardi Gras season, also known as Carnevale, or the Carnival season in English, refers to the celebrations which begin after the Feast of the Epiphany and culminate on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, referring to the practice of the last day of eating lots of rich and fatty foods before beginning Lent, the penitential season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving in preparation for Easter. Back in the days prior to refrigeration, all rich food and drink had to be disposed of before the 40 days (47 if you count the Sundays) of Lent started, which gave rise to a giant community party of consumption. The Italian term Carnevale is said to have come from the Latin phrase carne vale which means farewell to meat, another reference to the beginning of Lent. Some of the best known traditions, including carnival parades and masquerade balls were first recorded in medieval Italy. The Carnevale of Venice was for a long time the most famous Carnival celebration. The Carnival of Venice ends when the Svolo del Leon or large canvas flag with the Lion of St. Mark which is the symbol of that city, is raised up to the bell tower to fly over the Piazza San Marco. From Italy, the Carnival tradition spread to the Catholic nations of Spain, Portugal and France. It was French settlers led by the brothers Iberville and Bienville LeMoyne who brought Mardi Gras to North America. Sent by King Louis XIV of France to the New World to defend their territories in what are now Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi, the brothers sailed a few miles upstream from the mouth of the Mississippi River and on March 3, 1699 set up camp on its West Bank. Since that day was the very one on which Mardi Gras was being celebrated back in France, they named the site Point du Mardi Gras in honor of the festival. The oldest annual Mardi Gras celebration in America belongs to Mobile, Alabama, having started in The best known, however, are the Mardi Gras celebrations of New Orleans. Since Mardi Gras is a time for excess, why not help us celebrate it twice! Our Parish Mardi Gras Party will be held on Saturday, March 1 from 6:30 10:00 PM in the school. It will feature a Pot Luck Supper to help keep the cost down so that more people, especially families, can attend. Tickets are $10 per adult, $5 per school age child, plus a main dish for our Pot Luck Buffet Table. There will be a live band, a DJ, entertainment and fun for the children, a prize for best costume (costumes optional), and other surprises. Two of my best priest friends from Rome are from the Archdioceses of New Orleans and Mobile respectively, and they have sent me some authentic Mardi Gras party supplies to enhance our celebration. Tickets are available at the weekend Masses. The second celebration is Carnevale for the Area Churches hosted by Gargiulo s Restaurant on Sunday, March 2 beginning at 3:00 PM. A little more upscale at $80 per person, it includes hot hors d oeuvres, a four course meal, an open bar, and entertainment by Classie Sounds Entertainment. Gargiulo s will also make a donation back to the parish for each parishioner attending, so everyone wins. For reservations, please leave your name at the rectory office. I plan on enjoying both parties, so why not join me. Let s get all our feasting and partying out of our system before Lent begins. But until then, Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler! that is, Let The Good Times Roll! Fr. Bob Rosary Society: Westchester Broadway Theatre Bus Trip - "Ragtime The Musical". Thursday, March 20, $85 includes the show, lunch and transportation. We have 3 seats available.
