3 Pastor s Column June 3 4, 2017 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. This weekend we celebrate Pentecost Sunday, the great feast of the Holy Spirit. Together with Christmas, Easter, and Our Lord s Ascension, it is one of the most important solemnities on our Church calendar. As the Magnificat magazine so aptly puts it, By the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, Christ s Paschal Mystery was brought to completion. The Holy Spirit prepares us with his grace in order to draw us to Christ. He manifests the Risen Lord to us, opening our minds. He makes present the mystery of Christ. And he reconciles us, bringing us into communion with God. In his homily on the feast of Pentecost last year, our Holy Father Pope Francis said, The central purpose of Jesus mission, which culminated in the gift of the Holy Spirit, was to renew our relationship with the Father, a relationship severed by sin, to take us from our state of being orphaned children and to restore us as his sons and daughters. It is the Holy Spirit who dwells in us by virtue of our Baptism that makes us God s sons and daughters by adoption. It is the Holy Spirit in whom we are sealed in Confirmation that forms us into one body, which is Christ s Body, the Church, so that we may continue to carry out Christ s mission until the end of time. In my homily on Ascension Thursday, I called that event Jesus Mission Accomplished moment. I compared it to May 1, 2003 when then President George W. Bush landed on the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in a fighter jet and wearing a flight suit. A few hours later, he gave a speech announcing the end of major combat operations in the Iraq War. Far above him was the warship's banner stating Mission Accomplished. Unfortunately Bush's assertion and the sign itself became controversial after guerrilla warfare in Iraq increased during the Iraqi insurgency. The vast majority of casualties, both military and civilian, occurred after that speech. While they had a plan to win the war, there was no follow up plan to keep the peace. But God in his infinite wisdom always has a plan. After Jesus victory was won through the shock and awe of his Passion, Death and Resurrection, his mission accomplished he ascended back to the Father, and the next phase of the operation was begun through the sending of the Holy Spirit into the world on Pentecost. When we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, we begin to share in Christ s mission to unite all of creation in Himself. As Jesus tells his disciples in our Gospel reading, As the Father sent me, so I send you. We live in a society, country and world that is sadly divided. Division is the consequence of sin and the work of the Devil, whose very name means to separate and divide. But the Spirit brings forgiveness of our sins and unites us. According to St. Paul in our second reading: For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. This leads Pope Francis to say, The Spirit enables us to enter into a new experience of fraternity. By means of our universal Brother, Jesus, we can relate to one another in a new way; no longer orphans, but rather as children of the same good and merciful Father. And this changes everything! We can see each other as brothers and sisters whose differences can only increase our joy and wonder at sharing in this unique Fatherhood and Brotherhood. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth! -Fr. Bob
