3 Pastor s Column April 21 22, 2018 A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. This Fourth Sunday of Easter is known as Good Shepherd Sunday and is also the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. I would like to share with you just a bit of my own vocation story which is longer than most. I can remember as a child having a fascination for the Mass and a fondness for the Priesthood. I am told that as a child I used to make believe I was a priest. I attended St. Athanasius School where I was an altar server. I went on to Xaverian High school where I played varsity soccer, was a member of the Italian club, had many friends, and often attended Mass with the Brothers in their third floor chapel at the end of the school day. It was while I was on a senior retreat that I recall having an overwhelming experience of God s love, and I promised Him that I would do with my life whatever He wanted. I thought then that I might one day be a priest. However, I never felt comfortable sharing those feelings with anyone. I had been taught by the nuns that a priestly vocation was a gift from God, not something that a person would choose for himself. I felt guilty for wanting to be a priest, not realizing that my desire to serve God was His way of calling me. Never having been asked or encouraged to consider the Priesthood by anyone, I traveled to the woods of New Hampshire to attend Dartmouth College. I was student manager of the baseball team and joined a fraternity, still managing to get to Mass each Sunday. After graduating with honors, I embarked on what soon became a very successful twenty-five year career as an actuary and senior executive for a large international insurance company. I quickly moved up the corporate ladder, becoming Executive Vice President and Chief Actuary. I traveled frequently to offices in London, Paris, Zurich, Hong Kong and Tokyo. I loved my job. I had a steady girlfriend. I was making more money than I could have ever imagined. I had everything the world says will make you happy. And I was happy, yet unfulfilled. I could not escape the feeling that God had something else in mind for me. During this time I stayed close to the Church with great friends made through the Wall Street Catholic Young Adult Club. I became more involved in my parish as a lector and taking adult education classes. I asked one of the priests, Father Bryan Patterson, to become my Spiritual Director. When he asked me why, the best answer I could give was that I wanted to make sure the life I was living was the one God intended for me. Father Bryan helped me to open up to those feelings I had been carrying around inside of me for so long. To the amazement of, but with much encouragement and support from family, friends, and colleagues, in 2004 I left my career behind to enter the Pre-Theology program at the Cathedral Seminary Residence in Douglaston. Despite all my international travel, it took studying for the Priesthood to bring me to Rome in 2005, where I spent six years studying Theology and Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University. In between I was ordained a deacon at St. Peter s Basilica in 2008 and a priest back home at St. James Cathedral in 2009, two of the happiest days of my life. Since returning to the Diocese in 2011, the Bishop has put my academic knowledge and business skills to good use. Besides being your Pastor, I am also Vice-Chancellor and Associate Vicar for Canonical Affairs. I love being a priest! There is nothing like the feeling you get when your will is in sync with God s will. While the Lord asked me to lay down my life in a radical way, as His disciples we are all called to continue His mission through our participation in and support of His Church. One tangible way to do that is by giving to the Annual Catholic Appeal, the lion s share of which goes towards vocation support and providing training and spiritual instruction to our parish and ministry leadership. At this ceremony the candidates are asking to take this final step in their initiation in the Church through the Sacrament of Confirmation.
