3 Guest Column July 29 30, 2017 Has God Predetermined who Inherits the Kingdom? St. Paul in the second reading today from Romans 8 uses some very tricky, thoughtprovoking language that may jump out at you, as it has for me: For those God foreknew, He also predestined and those He predestined He also called; and those He called He also justified; and those He justified He also glorified (v ) Anytime I come across the term, predestined, it makes me a little uncomfortable. Indeed, the term has made many Christians since the beginning of the Church confused and uncomfortable. Many a religious dispute has been fought over the concept of predestination the idea that God has already predetermined who will inherit eternal life, and who won t and the fact that it is possibly articulated in Romans could still be troubling for some. Make no mistake about it the Church in no uncertain terms teaches that God has already worked out who is going to be saved, and who isn t. The Church teaches that we can bring about our own salvation. So what exactly has been predestined? The highest and most exalted of God s creatures, we are our own agents in determining our salvation, making use of God s gifts of free will, rationality, and the sanctifying grace that is actively bestowed upon us. This pathway to eternal life is cleared for us through the Redemptive Sacrifice of the Cross, which gains our salvation and makes it possible for every human being, past and present, to attain eternal life. What has been predestined and predetermined since before the dawn of time and creation -- is that eternal life would be offered to us. That we were not created for destruction, or as playthings, or as God s folly but rather, so that we could participate in the love and goodness of God, not just of course in this world, but in the next, free of the bonds of sin and the restrictions of our fleshy existence. At the crux of Paul s teaching is that Christ has won eternal life for us because this is what He desires for us! God, in His goodness, does not desire death, but life! We worship a God that claims us as His own and wants to restore us to what sin has taken from us. Paul says a few verses earlier in Romans 8 that we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies (v. 23.) Throughout our lives we do groan for another form of existence -- for a world without problems, or to be with our deceased loved ones. We groan to be with God, not separated from God. Being Christian satisfies this innate groaning. We can and will behold God s face and enter into His glory, transcending any manner we can comprehend here! We know not just hope for or think it would be very nice but KNOW that God has worked our salvation out for us, in the Death and Resurrection of His Son, for all things work for good for those who love God (v. 28.) God has provided this for us. We can be assured of this. St. Paul, by no means, is speaking about individual believers in today s second reading; he is referring to the entire Christian community as being conformed to the image of Jesus Christ so that Christ might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters (v. 29.) Paul here is proclaiming Christianity as what had been intended, had been predestined, by Almighty God. Jesus Christ is the firstborn of the new creation, and we, His brothers and sisters, conformed in His image, bear His likeness in what we do. We take on the identity of Christ in the world. We are called, according to His purpose (v. 28.) This purpose is to redeem to reclaim the world. We are integral in this purpose. Is there, then, any higher calling in this world? -Fr. Michael

5 Depicted immediately to the right of St. David at the front of our church is another warrior, St. Michael the Archangel, whose name in Hebrew means, " Who is like God" ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL September 29, Feast of the Archangels Recorded four times in Scripture, St. Michael s name was the war-cry of the good angels in the battle fought in Heaven against the enemy and his followers. The Book of Revelation tells of the great conflict at the end of time between Michael and his angels against the evil one, which also reflects the battle fought in heaven at the beginning of time. Following Scripture, Christian tradition assigns St. Michael to 1) fight against Satan; 2) rescue the souls of the faithful from Satan s power, especially at the hour of death; 3) champion God's people (the Jewish people of the Old Law and Christians,) as patron of the Church, and of the orders of knights, during the Middle Ages; and 4) call souls away from the earth and lead them to judgment. St. Basil and other Greek Fathers, as well as the Roman Liturgy, place St. Michael over all the angels; they say he is called "archangel" because he is the prince of the other angels. This Spiritual Armor Prayer can be prayed through the intercession of St. Michael the Archangel and is adapted from Ephesians 6:10-18: Heavenly Father, we ask You today for Your truth as a belt tight around the loins of our mind. We put on the zeal to announce Your good news of peace as shoes for our feet. We put on Your righteousness, O Christ, as our breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet for our head. Father, we take up faith as a shield which is able to put out all the fiery darts of the enemy, and the sword of the Spirit, which is Your Word, O Lord. Father, may the love with which You have loved Jesus be in us, and may Jesus be in us. We ask You for the grace of a servant heart. Amen. Thank You for the warmth of the sun and the increased daylight. Thank You for the beauty I see all around me and for the opportunity to be outside and enjoy Your creation. Thank You for the increased time I have to be with my friends and family, and for the more casual pace of the summer season. Draw me closer to You this summer. Teach me how I can pray no matter where I am or what I am doing. Warm my soul with the awareness of Your presence, and light my path with Your Word and Counsel. As I enjoy Your creation, create in me a pure heart and a hunger and a thirst for You. Amen.
