3 Pastor s Column September 29 30, 2018 Whoever is not against us is for us. Some people attempt to prevent a good deed from being accomplished because it is being done by a rival faction. Another man jealously tries to stifle the speech of two others due to a minor infraction of the rules. Are these just two more examples of the tribalism paralyzing our politics or the dissention and infighting taking place in our Church today? Not exactly. The first is about an episode that took place almost 2,000 years ago that is described in this weekend s Gospel reading. And the second happened anywhere from 1,300 to 1,600 years prior to that during the time of Moses which is recorded in our first reading. I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same! In our Old Testament reading from the Book of Numbers, Joshua tells Moses to stop Eldad and Medad from prophesying because they had not left the camp to join the gathering where the Lord had bestowed the spirit on the elders. But Moses recognized that the spirit came to rest on them anyway and told Joshua, Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets! And similarly in our Gospel reading, when John told Jesus that the disciples tried to prevent someone from driving out demons in Jesus name because he was not part of their group, Jesus replied, Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us. By saying, whoever is not against us is for us, Jesus is not watering down the requirements for his followers; rather, he is eliminating all the entry barriers for anyone who is willing to join his cause. Just think of some of the familiar scenes from the Gospels. We see Jesus dining with tax collectors and sinners, defending and protecting the woman caught in adultery whom the people want to stone to death. We hear about Jesus accepting a drink of water from the Samaritan woman at the well and healing the servant of the Roman centurion. In political language, Jesus constructs a big tent for his followers. He is the leader, not of the 1% or the 47%, or even the 99%, but of the 100%. All are called. All are welcomed. But once you say yes to his invitation and become his follower, he expects your total allegiance and commitment. Jesus teaching has two important implications for us. First, we should not be so quick to judge others. We are often too apt to condemn what we do not understand. Like the disciples, we can oftentimes be filled with petty jealousies and blinded by our pride. Second, what really counts is not so much what we say, but what we do. The ultimate proof that we are followers of Jesus is the way we live our lives and the fruit that our lives produce. Jesus preaches a message of tolerance. Not a tolerance that says anything goes, but a tolerance that says all may come. But once we arrive at that point where we have said yes to Christ and become his follower, then we must truly follow him and do as he commands. Once we are for Jesus, once we join his side, then it is incumbent upon us to give witness to him and to help, support and encourage others to do the same. As the rest of our Gospel passage demonstrates, those who assist in furthering the cause will be rewarded, but those who get in the way and lead others astray will be punished. Jesus says that anyone who shows a simple kindness such as giving a cup of water to drink to one of his followers will surely not lose his reward. But then he describes in graphic and frightening terms the fate that awaits those who sin and especially those who cause innocent people to fall as well. Jesus message of tolerance in no way implies indifference as to how we live our lives. Nothing is more important than our eternal salvation. The clearest choice to attain that goal is to follow Jesus and to enlist and encourage others to do the same. Fr. Bob
