3 Pastor s Column March 25-26, 2017 Live in Faith, Give in Love This Fourth Sunday of Lent is known as Laetare Sunday. Laetare is the Latin imperative command, Rejoice! Half-way through our Lenten journey, we set aside our violet vestments this weekend and instead don our beautiful rose colored robes and decorate the sanctuary with flowers as a reminder that Easter is coming soon. And even though the snow and cold weather we have endured the past two weeks may have obscured the fact that the season of Spring has indeed arrived, we live in faith that soon we will be celebrating the joy of our Lord s Resurrection. Inspired by the words of St. Paul our familiar hymn proclaims, We walk by faith, and not by sight: No gracious words we hear, of him who spoke as none e er spoke, but we believe him near. Our readings this weekend are all about living in faith. First, in our Old Testament reading, the prophet Samuel is sent by the Lord to Jesse of Bethlehem to anoint one of his sons as king. But Samuel has a hard time picking out the one God has chosen. The Lord tells Samuel, Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance, but the Lord looks into the heart. Then in our New Testament reading St. Paul exhorts us, Brothers and sisters: You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of the light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. And in our Gospel, we hear about Jesus healing of the man born blind. The healed blind man is able to live in faith. He recognizes Jesus first as a prophet and then worships him as Lord. But the Pharisees are blinded by their own self-righteousness and hardness of heart. Because he cured the blind man on a Sabbath the Pharisees say of Jesus, This man is not from God, because he does not keep the Sabbath. They refuse to see the mighty signs that Jesus is performing all around them. They have no compassion for their brother in need. Rather, they ridicule the healed blind man and throw him out of the synagogue. This weekend we begin our participation in the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal. This year s theme is Live in Faith, Give in Love. Faith leads us to an encounter with our amazing God whose love is unconditional, and faith moves us to live a life of charity and to give of ourselves in service to others. Faith inspires us to see others as our brothers and sisters about whom we must be concerned. As in years past, the Annual Catholic Appeal will continue to support seminarian education and formation, Catholic Charities service to the poor and vulnerable, Catholic Migration Services help to immigrants, and Faith Formation through Catholic School education and catechesis. Your gift to the Appeal make these works possible for our Diocese and impacts countless lives for Christ. And all funds collected in excess of our parish goals come back to us and has enabled us to do the extraordinary work that needs to be done such as enhancing the Lion s Den, putting in a new sound system, and painting the church at St. Mark and moving forward with our plans for an addition to the church that will include a meeting space with a kitchen area and bathroom facilities at St. Margaret Mary. We are off to a great start. With just a handful of parish leaders who have already made their pledges, we are already two-thirds of the way towards our respective parish goals of $40,125 at St. Mark and $2,354 at St. Margaret Mary. Next weekend will be commitment weekend. If everyone does their part, I am sure that our 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal will be another great success, because based on your past generosity, I know that you Live in Faith and Give in Love. -Fr. Upcoming Events Lenten Activities Save the date: Friday March 31st: Julian Cleland will give instruction for adults on making palm crosses 6:30-8:00 pm in the Lions Den No experience necessary! These crosses will be distributed at the Palm Sunday Liturgies on April 8 & 9. Little Bethlehem Christians will be at St Mark this weekend. Wood carvings will be available for purchase after all the Masses. St. Mark will be hosting a model Seder Meal with Rabbi Claudio Kupchik on Wednesday April 5th at 7:00 PM in The Lion s Den All are welcome to attend & learn about the roots of our faith and worship and to participate in some interreligious dialogue. 5 Tuesday we had a bowling outing for Kindergarten to Fourth Grade to Shell Lanes. It was rescheduled due to last week s snow storm. Friday was Family Fun Night sponsored by the Diocese of Brooklyn. A great time was had by all at both events. Third Scrutiny: April 2 at 11:00 Mass Each year, Ash Wednesday & Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.
