3 Pastor s Column November 3-4, 2018 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This weekend starts National Vocation Awareness week. The word vocation comes from the Latin verb vocare which means to call. A vocation is a call from God to pursue holiness in a specific way, involving a public and permanent commitment. And before you put aside this column thinking it does not apply to you, let me assure you that everyone has a vocation. Each of us has been created by God for a special purpose and to play a unique role in his plan of salvation. In our Old Testament reading we hear Moses tell the Israelites, Hear O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. Therefore you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. And in our Gospel Jesus affirms this as the first commandment and adds to it as the second, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. We are brought into existence by a God who is love, out of love, for love. And since we are created to love, our souls are at peace only in love. Your vocation is the answer to the question, In what specific way is God calling me to love? Some people spend their entire lives trying to figure out the answer to that question. I am reminded of a scene from a favorite movie, City Slickers. For those of you not old enough to remember it, Billy Crystal s character Mitch and a couple of friends are celebrating his 39 th birthday as they experience their own midlife crises by participating in a cattle drive. While Mitch is alone with Curly, the tough and intimidating Trail Boss played by Jack Palance, Curly offers Mitch some life advice. Curly asks Mitch, Do you know what the secret of life is? This. And Curly holds up one finger. Your finger? answers Mitch. No, says Curly. One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and the rest doesn t mean anything. Mitch: But what is that one thing? Curly replies, That s what you have to find out. Your vocation is that one thing that will bring you true peace and happiness. I can tell you from personal experience, when your will is aligned with and in sync with God s will for your life, great things happen. Most people are called to marriage. Marriage is a vowed union of a man and a woman who out of love give themselves totally to each other and cooperate with God s divine love to bring new life into the world. The Church Fathers of the Second Vatican Council said, Authentic married love is caught up into divine love and is governed and enriched by Christ's redeeming power and the saving activity of the Church. Some people are called to the single life. In my family, I had a single Aunt on my mother s side and a single Uncle on my father s side, and each was the favorite Aunt and favorite Uncle to me, my siblings, and cousins because of their ability to love so freely and so generously. But others, for reasons known only to God, are called to serve Him in a special way in the Priesthood, Diaconate, or in the Consecrated Life. Priests share in the High Priesthood of Jesus that we hear about in our second reading. They are ordained to devote their lives to serve the people of God through preaching and the sacraments. Deacons are ordained to serve by assisting the Bishop and his priests as ministers of God s Word and at His table. The Consecrated Life includes men and women who follow Jesus in a radical way taking vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, often in religious orders which exhibit the gifts or charisms of their founders such as the Franciscans, Dominicans, or Benedictines. As a Spiritual Director of mine once put it, it is as if every so often when bringing new life into the world God says, And this one is for me. God does not choose those who are qualified for this task; rather, He qualifies those whom He chooses. Don t say, I am not worthy. None of us are. Do not be afraid. Be open and pray. It s all about love. Redouble your efforts to love and God will reveal your vocation. Fr. Bob

LISTENING SESSION ON RACISM Since the tragic and horri c events of Charlottesville, Virginia just one year ago, we have seen the effect and impact that racism has had on our society. The Bishops of the United States has formed a committee to focus and address the sin of racism. Here in the Diocese of Brooklyn, Bishop DiMarzio has formed a commission on Racism and Social Justice. The goal of this commission is to deal with the social and religious problems that racism in all of its forms presents to us. The commission would like to hear from all of the faithful of the Diocese of Brooklyn. To that end, we will be hosting an open listening session for all the faithful of the diocese to attend. This session is meant to be an opportunity for us to share how racism has impacted our parishes and the church as a whole. This session will be held on Saturday, November 17th beginning at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark Parish located at 2609 East 19th Street. All are invited. Our Annual Christmas Dinner will be held on December 10th at 7:00 p.m. at Gargiulos. The cost is $55. 5 Office of Faith Formation Our saints marched into church on Thursday, November 1st in celebration of All Saints Day. My thanks to all who participated in the mass. Our 8 th Graders took the TACHS Test for admission to Catholic High Schools this past Saturday. Congratulations to the students chosen by their teachers as Students of the Month for October. They were recognized for demonstrating tremendous efforts in academics.
