Epiphany comes from a Greek verb meaning " to reveal". 3 Pastor s Column January 7-8, 2017 Nations shall walk by your light. For me, one of the highlights of the past year was the 2016 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the 31st Olympiad, when the world came to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Expectations were somewhat diminished because of a perceived instability of the host country's federal government, health and safety concerns surrounding the Zika virus, and a doping scandal involving Russia, which affected the participation of its athletes in the Games. But more than 11,000 athletes from 205 National Olympic Committees, including for the first time a Refugee Olympic Team, took part in the pageantry. I enjoyed watching the athletes march, nation by nation, into the Olympic Stadium under their countries flags and the lighting of the Olympic torch to open the games. And the United States topped the medal table for the fifth time in the past six Summer Olympics, led by a spectacular performance by our Women s Gymnastics team. The modern Olympics were inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, which were religious and athletic festivals held every four years at the sanctuary of Zeus in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. During the Games, all conflicts among the participating Greek city-states were postponed until the Games were finished. This cessation of hostilities was known as the Olympic peace or truce. This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, a time when the world came, figuratively if not literally, to Bethlehem. This feast commemorates the manifestation of Jesus, the Son of God, to the Gentiles, who came to him in the persons of the Magi. Described as kings, wise men, or astrologers from the east, the Magi left their own country and followed the light, not of a torch but of a star, which led them to Bethlehem and to the Christ child, the light of the world. Thus was the prophecy of Isaiah in our Old Testament reading fulfilled: Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance. Raise your eyes and look about; they all gather and come to you Not athletes looking to compete, the Magi came to do homage to the newborn king. Their arrival rivaled the pageantry of the Olympics, as they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold (for a king), frankincense (for a priest), and myrrh (for one who is born to die). Thus the magi s gifts represent Jesus three-fold ministry of Priest, Prophet, and King. And their visit did not lack Olympic style drama, as Herod, jealous and threatened by the talk of a new king, tried to use the Magi to learn the Christ child s whereabouts in order to kill him. But warned in a dream, the Magi departed for their country by another way. This feast of the Epiphany shows us that Jesus is the Messiah for all people, Jews and Gentiles alike. In a world filled with the darkness of evil and terrorism, and the clouds of ignorance, sin and division, Jesus comes to gather everyone together into his marvelous light. But it also demonstrates that we are free to cooperate with God like the Magi did, or to reject God and place our own selfish agenda ahead of God s plan like King Herod did. Let us choose to be wise men and wise women, persevering in our search for God and bringing our gifts to Jesus, in order to bring about not just an Olympic truce, but true peace in our hearts and in our world, which only the Prince of Peace can give. -Fr.
