3 Pastor s Column February 24 25, 2018 Rabbi, it is good that we are here! When I began my formation for the Priesthood at the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Douglaston, I had the opportunity to meet a retired sports psychologist who also helped out the seminarians from time to time named Dr. Frank Lodato. A pioneer in his field, Dr. Lodato was born in Brooklyn to Italian immigrants in His career as a sports psychologist began at Manhattan College in 1956, working with the school s basketball and track team. He started taking on clients from the professional ranks in 1970, when individuals from the Miami Dolphins approached him looking for a mental edge, and he worked with several members of that undefeated 1972 Super Bowl championship team. In the early 1990s, Lodato worked with Marty Brodeur, when the future Devils goalie was a minor leaguer in Utica, and was employed by the New Jersey Devils when they won their first Stanley Cup in Dr. Lodato was especially known for his use of visualization techniques, helping the athletes to focus and see themselves succeeding to help them through the difficult challenges they faced. Our Gospel reading this weekend is St. Mark s account of Our Lord s Transfiguration, an event which would serve as a visualization exercise for his inner circle of Apostles. Jesus had just begun to teach his disciples that he would have to suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes and be killed, and that whoever wished to come after him must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow him. In order to prepare his followers to face those difficult challenges that lay ahead, Jesus took those closest to him, Peter, James and John, up a mountain and let them see his future glory. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Moses and Elijah represent the Law and the Prophets, confirming Jesus to be the Messiah who fulfills the Jewish Scriptures. In one of the great understatements of all time Peter exclaims, Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Then Peter, James and John heard the voice from heaven tell them what they must do: This is my beloved Son. Listen to him. Just as the Transfiguration of the Lord is a visualization exercise for Peter, James, and John, it is meant to be one for us as well. As Bishop Robert Barron says, For that brief shining moment on the mountain, God revealed the transfigured humanity that will mark the denizens of heaven: beautiful, elevated, dazzling, outside the confines of space and time. St. Thomas Aquinas said that the Transfiguration is meant to give all the followers of Christ, making their way through the difficulty of this life, a burst of hope. And we will be among those chosen ones if we pay attention to those words of the Father and listen to His Beloved Son. And we do just that whenever we come together as a worshipping community to celebrate Holy Mass. First we listen to him by hearing his word in Sacred Scripture, and then we listen to him when we take and eat his Body and drink his Blood as he commanded: Do this in memory of me. Our liturgy is itself a kind of visualization exercise, as it is nothing less than a foretaste of that eternal banquet that awaits us in heaven. If only our non-practicing brothers and sisters truly understood what happens here in our church every time Mass is celebrated, or as one of my teachers in Rome used to say, who happens here at Mass; our pews would be filled to overflowing. During this holy season of Lent, let s pray for them, that someday soon they will come back and join us so that we can all say together, It is good that we are here! This Lent let us all rededicate ourselves to keeping our eyes focused and fixed on the heavenly goal that awaits us. -Fr. Bob

In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. 5 ST. MARK CATHOLIC ACADEMY CARD PARTY APRIL 21, 2018 $25.00 INCLUDES LUNCH, DESSERT & DRINKS TICKETS ON SALE DURING SCHOOL HOURS Now that we are in the midst of the Lenten season, parishes will be offering several opportunities to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is one opportunity to actually ask ourselves how we have acted towards our families, spouses and those around us. While I might call myself a Catholic, have I done what I need to do in living my faith? Lent is a perfect time to give honest answers to these questions. How we approach the reception of God s mercy is important. We are God s children. We come to the father to ask his forgiveness through the mercy of Jesus given by the ordained priest. It s not just ritual. It is life. Simple Steps to Receiving the Sacrament: Examination of conscience. This is not supposed to be a torture session. Actually, our consciences will bring to mind any serious sins we have committed. Even people who have been away from the confessional for many years, even decades, realize that knowing our sins is not the hard part. It s actually owning up to them to another. Keep in mind that God knows the whole past in every detail anyway. We make an honest effort to know ourselves and our failings. But, again, it s God s mercy that is most important. Sorrow for sin. If we are serious about going to confession, sorrow comes almost automatically. After all, we are admitting we are sinners right up front. That truthful admission brings sorrow. But don t confuse sorrow with emotions or feelings. You may still struggle with feelings of resentment and yet tell God you are sorry for the time you were angry with another person. Sorrow is in the heart and in the will. Confession of sin. Confess your sins as simply and as honestly as you can. It is easy to link sin with a commandment: missing Mass (third), anger (fifth), impurity (sixth, ninth). There is no need for great details, nor is the priest interested in detail. If you need help, don t hesitate to ask the priest for assistance. Listen to the words of the priest as he tries to guide you and remind you of God s love for you. Act of contrition. Make a sincere act of contrition. Thanks be to God. Leave the confessional and thank God for his forgiveness and pray the prayers the priest gave you for a penance. Office of Faith Formation Office Hours: Monday: 1 PM 5 PM Wednesday & Thursday: 9 AM 2PM religiouseducation1@verizon.net CHILD LURES One of the requirements from the diocesan office is that we provide a safe and secure environment for all the children in our program. We at St. Mark are committed to providing such an environment, but, we all need to be aware of unsafe and insecure situations our children encounter in their daily lives. Therefore, the Catholic Bishop Conference of the United States has provided us with a program which is called Child Lures. It is mandated by our diocesan office that we implement this program in every parish school and religious education program. This can only be successfully completed if you, as parents, cooperate in this endeavor. Upcoming presentations have been scheduled for the Religious Education program during the month of February. All parents and guardians of children in our program are invited to attend. Letters to the parents are being distributed to the children with the upcoming dates. Please check your child s folder. LENT: a time for new life to appear within us as well as around us. Lent is a season when springtime s rebirth in nature should reflect the growth taking place within us. New attitudes and fresh ways of looking at things are born; old attitudes and unhealthy habits disappear. The dying and rebirth that takes place within our hearts reflect the great mystery of both the death and resurrection of our Lord. FIRST COMMUNION: Upcoming dates: Practice for First Reconciliation March 5, & March 8 (in church) from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. Use side entrances only.
