3 Pastor s Column October 21-22,2017 Repay to God what belongs to God. This weekend we celebrate World Mission Sunday. Instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1926, the first World Mission collection was taken up in October 1927, so for 90 years now our parish and our diocese has been supporting the young missionary dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, an area that covers more than half the territory of the globe. Through the work and witness of mission priests, religious and lay leaders, the poor receive practical help and experience God s love and mercy, His hope and peace. This day is celebrated in all the local Churches as the feast of catholicity and universal solidarity so Christians the world over will recognize their common responsibility with regard to the evangelization of the world. How appropriate it is that in our gospel this weekend, St. Matthew tells us how the Pharisees plotted together with the Herodians to entrap Jesus in speech by asking his opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? The Pharisees were extremely orthodox keepers of Jewish law who resented the payment of the tax to a foreign king as an infringement of the divine right of God. The Herodians, on the other hand, were the party of Herod, king of Galilee, who owed his power to the Romans and who worked closely together with them. If Jesus says it is lawful, those zealous Jews who oppose Roman rule and their supporters will turn against him. But if he says it is unlawful, the Herodians and their followers will report him to the Roman officials who will in turn arrest Jesus as a revolutionary. But Jesus deftly avoids their trap by asking whose image and inscription are on the coin used to pay the tax. When the crowd replies, Caesar s, Jesus utters his often quoted line: Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. With these words Jesus changes the subject and moves the debate into a different realm. All too often we tend to focus only on the first part of Jesus statement, repaying to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. And while it is true that Jesus deserves credit for being the first to promote true religious freedom and the separation of Church and State in the best sense of that term, it is the second part of his answer, repaying to God what belongs to God that really stops his critics in their tracks and shows us where our priorities must lie. While our passage ends with Jesus reply, Matthew s Gospel continues with the line: When they heard this they were amazed, and leaving him they went away. Jesus point is that if the Pharisees and Herodians are so concerned and so careful about their responsibilities toward paying taxes to the state, an institution of human creation, how much more concerned and careful should you and I be about our obligations to the God who created us, saved us, and loves us? How do we go about repaying to God what belongs to God? Simply by responding to that great love God showers upon us by loving Him in our brothers and sisters most in need. The separation of Church and State does not mean removing any and all aspects of religion from the public sphere. It does not mean relegating our relationship with God and the practice of our faith to the purely private realm. For our faith is not just something that we do or say behind closed doors, it is who we are, and all our actions must be guided by that faith and give witness to that faith. As our responsorial psalm says, we must tell God s glory among the nations; among all peoples, his wondrous deeds. So as we celebrate World Mission Sunday this weekend, let s try to be both good citizens and good evangelizers, proclaiming the truth that is Jesus Christ to the world. -Fr. Bob

5 Our Middle School students have now been given their ChromeBooks to use at school and to bring home to complete classwork and homework assignments. This one-to-one program is brand new for us and we are one of the few schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn who have this program. Continuing our commitment to integrating technology into the classroom, we will be giving our younger students ipads to use in the classrooms. Our Academy was awarded a grant from DeSales Media of 100 ipads, with a case, protective glass and a data plan. This generous grant will now enable our younger students to use technology every day! Grades K, 1 and 2 will have class sets so that the teacher can support lessons with educational technology! The remaining grades will have access to the remaining ipads to use in their classrooms when needed. Right now, we are busy installing apps to the ipads so that the classes may begin using them as quickly as possible. Our Academy family raised $1024 for children who were affected by the various hurricanes. The money raised will go to the NCEA Hand to Hand student program to be used to get these students back to school with the necessary supplies needed.
