3 Pastor s Column November 17 18, 2018 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory In our two parishes of St. Mark and St. Margaret Mary, we are blessed with two very beautiful churches, each in its own right. There is the simple elegance and intimacy of St. Margaret Mary Church with its exquisite woodwork, the visible interior cross-beams holding up the roof, and plain stained glass windows, sitting in the seaside community of Manhattan Beach like a country chapel. And then there is the majestic grandeur of, its tower modeled after San Marco in Venice rising high above Sheepshead Bay, with all its marble, the spectacular mosaics of holy figures around the ceiling, the stained glass windows depicting scenes in the lives of Jesus and Mary, and gorgeous Stations of the Cross. But what I usually notice first is the magnificent mural painted in the apse above the sanctuary. The mural is a portion of a work by the great Renaissance artist Raphael known as the Disputation of the Holy Sacrament. Also known as The Triumph of Religion, it was painted between 1509 and 1510 as the first part of Raphael's commission to decorate with frescoes the rooms of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. At the time, this room was the private papal library where the supreme papal tribunal met. The Disputation was probably the first fresco that Raphael, the then 27-year-old artist from Urbino, painted at the Vatican. It is also his most richly theological work. Christ seated on the clouds is surrounded by an aureole, flanked by the Blessed Virgin Mary and John the Baptist to his right and left. Other biblical figures such as Adam, Jacob, and Moses holding tablets of the Ten Commandments are to the sides. God the Father sits above them all in the golden light of heaven and adored by angels. Below Christ's feet is the Holy Spirit, to whose sides are books of the four Gospels. A representation of Christ s Second Coming, it is reminiscent of the words in this weekend s Gospel, And then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory, and then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky. Interestingly enough, our mural in St. Mark shows only the top half of Raphael s painting. It leaves off the bottom half which depicts an altar upon which sits a monstrance containing the Most Holy Eucharist. The altar is flanked by theologians including the Fathers of the Western Church St. Gregory the Great, St. Jerome, St. Augustine, and St. Ambrose who are discussing the miracle of Transubstantiation, ordinary bread and wine transformed into the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus in the Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist at every Mass and reserved in the tabernacle. This portion of the painting is left out, because we make it up! Our actual altar and our tabernacle containing the real presence of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament, and you and me every time we gather to celebrate the Eucharist, complete that fresco painted by Raphael. As our liturgical year begins to come to a close, our attention is drawn by our readings to the end times when Christ will come again. In his Disputation, Raphael created a scene spanning both heaven and earth. The Second Coming of Christ above is meant to draw one s focus to the Eucharist on the altar below. Where the two axes are crossed in the painting the unity between God and man is preserved through the image of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who continues to be physically with us in the Eucharist. May we never take this precious gift for granted, and may it always remind us of the future God has planned for us with Him, Mary, and the Saints in heaven. And as we approach our great civic holiday of Thanksgiving, always remember that Eucharist means thanksgiving. - Fr. Bob

5 Office of Faith Formation As we are nearing Thanksgiving, the students of Saint Mark Catholic Academy have been very generous in helping those in need. We collected hundreds of cans of food for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry as part of our yearly Thanksgiving Food Drive. Our wishes are simple a Blessed Thanksgiving to All! The gold buyers will test your gold and silver and determine its value. You will be paid in cash based on that days market value of the precious metal you are selling. While you the customer are being paid full price, the gold buyers give 50% of their profits to the church. Please spread the word to your family and friends. It is a good practice to offer thanks before meals as Jesus did. Encourage each other to mention something specific for which he or she is thankful for. Don t forget to thank God even in the hard times as well as the good times. Be grateful what we have and give thanks to God. THE GIVING TREE It is that time of year again! Once again we will be helping less fortunate children & adults during Christmas. The Advent Giving Trees will be displayed in the church beginning Sat., Nov. 24 through Sun., Dec. 16. The tags are prepared by some of our candidates preparing for Confirmation and St. Vincent de Paul members. PLEASE FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS ON THE TAG AND TAPE THE TAG SECURELY TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE GIFT.
