May 20, 2018 Pentecost Sunday The Holy Spirit is the actor who drives the acts of the apostles. He urged them and always urges us onward to bring the Good News to new places and new people. 3 Pastor s Column May 19 20, 2018 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit In my Ascension Thursday homily, I compared Jesus triumphant return to the Father in heaven to that day just over 15 years ago, May 1, 2003, when President George W. Bush gave a speech beneath a giant banner titled Mission Accomplished aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln marking the end of major combat activity in Iraq. In many ways, the great Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord might very well be called His Mission Accomplished moment. Having defeated the Devil through the shock and awe of His Passion, Death and Resurrection, Jesus continued to appear to his disciples over the course of the next forty days to continue to teach them and to convince them that he had indeed risen from the dead before returning to His Heavenly Father in glory. Unfortunately for President Bush, his Mission Accomplished moment became somewhat controversial, because while we might have won the war, there was no plan to win the peace. Guerrilla warfare in Iraq increased and the vast majority of casualties, both military and civilian, occurred after that speech. But God always has a plan, and His plan for winning the peace was to send the Holy Spirit into the world upon Jesus disciples at Pentecost to begin Phase II of His great story of salvation, in order that we might have the strength and courage to give testimony on His behalf and continue His mission in time and space. It is by virtue of our baptism when we first receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, and of our Confirmation when we are sealed in the gift of the Holy Spirit, that we are called to be Jesus witnesses in the world today. Sticking with my military analogy, while Baptism may be compared with the day of our enlistment when we join Christ s Army, Confirmation is our day of deployment when, after being well trained and equipped for battle, we are sent out into the fray as fully initiated Catholics armed with the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, knowledge, understanding, counsel, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord. When I was Confirmed as an adolescent, I can remember being told that we became soldiers of Christ. I am not sure why we don t use that language much anymore. Even though Jesus has already won the war, there is a great spiritual battle going on in this world of ours that is filled with the sin, lies, deception, and darkness of the Evil One, and it is up to us fight against that in order to win the peace. The great Patron Saint of Parish Priests, Saint John Vianney once said, The Holy Spirit is light and strength. He teaches us to distinguish between truth and falsehood, and between good and evil The eyes of the Christian see deep into eternity. To the man who gives himself up to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, there seems to be no world; to the world there seems to be no God We must therefore find out by whom we are led. If it is not by the Holy Spirit, we labor in vain; there is no substance nor savor in anything we do. If it is by the Holy Spirit, we taste a delicious sweetness Those who are led by the Holy Spirit experience all sorts of happiness in themselves. The role of the Holy Spirit in our lives and in our world cannot be overstated. The gift of the Holy Spirit is truly a game changer. It is nothing less than God s own divine life which dwells within us. The Holy Spirit can be a powerful transforming agent in our lives and in our world if we open our hearts and minds to him and give him free reign over our lives. When was the last time you prayed to the Holy Spirit? Anytime we have a major decision to make in our lives, or are seeking to understand a person or situation, or need strength and courage to face a particular challenge, is a great time to simply pray, Come Holy Spirit. If you have not yet been confirmed, I urge you to contact our Religious Education office and look into receiving this wonderful sacrament. Our parish needs you, the Church needs you, and our world needs you to make Christ present by his Spirit dwelling within you. -Fr. Bob
