February 18, 2018 First Sunday of Lent The theme of safe passage through destructive waters to a place of life and hope spreads throughout our understanding of this baptismal season of Lent. The Sisterhood of Saint Elisabeth was founded in For more than 15 years our sisters have been rendering spiritual, social and financial support to the sick and the suffering at the National Psychiatric Clinic, the boarding home for children with special needs and mentally challenged adults, & a TB clinic. It is of great importance to give spiritual support and consolation to people in need. In recent years a rehabilitation center for the homeless, drug and alcohol addicts, & ex-prisoners was established 20 miles away from the Convent. About 160 residents live here today. Many lost and struggling people get a chance to tackle their problems and start a new life with God. To help these people, workshops were established on the grounds of the Convent. Many of these residents have a possibility to express themselves in art for God; working together with the sisters and making beautiful articles (hand painted icons, crosses, crucifixes, woodcarvings, embroidered and ceramic gifts, vestments). All these goods are made with love and prayer and bring blessing to home. 3 Pastor s Column February 17 18, 2018 This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. This past Wednesday we celebrated the confluence of three big events. First, it was Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the holy and penitential season of Lent. Second, it was St. Valentine s Day, a day for celebrating love. I read somewhere that this was the first time that Ash Wednesday and Valentine s Day coincided since And third, it was the day that pitchers and catchers reported to camp, marking the beginning of Major League Baseball s Spring Training. And after the dismal seasons that the Jets and the Giants had, and that the Knicks, Nets, and the Rangers are having, Spring Training comes none too soon. Lent is modeled after the story we hear in this weekend s Gospel. Mark tells us, The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days tempted by Satan. Jesus was getting ready to begin his public ministry during which he would spend three difficult and challenging years preaching, teaching, healing, and calling people to conversion. He prayed, he fasted, he resisted the temptations of the Devil, and after the forty days were over said, This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel. When you think about it, there are a lot of similarities between Spring Training and Lent. Both are meant to get us into shape. In Spring Training, baseball players run sprints and lift weights to get themselves into good physical shape. During Lent, we try to get ourselves into good spiritual shape through prayer, the reading of Scripture, and frequent reception of the Sacraments of Confession and Holy Communion. Spring Training is a time for baseball players to work on the fundamentals of their sport: hitting, fielding, throwing, and running. Players go through various drills. Pitchers will practice breaking off the mound to cover first base on a ball hit to the right side of the infield over and over again until they build up muscle memory and it becomes automatic. Hitters will use a batting tee and hit ball after ball into a net until they get their swing down just the way they want it. Coaches will fungo hundreds of ground balls to the infielders and fly balls to the outfielders so that fielding becomes second nature to them. In Lent, we too work on the fundamentals of our faith. The Church gives us three spiritual tools in particular, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, to build up virtue so that our practice of the faith becomes second nature to us. Lent should be a time of increased prayer, both public, by making the effort to get to Mass more often, as well as private. Reading and meditating over the Scriptures, a practice called Lectio Divina, can be a beautiful and most helpful practice. And if you are not already praying the Rosary every day, Lent is a great time to start. Fasting is all about sacrifice and self-denial. Giving up something we like for Lent, or doing something positive that we should do more often but perhaps do not enjoy doing, may seem childish, but it helps us discipline our will to help fight against the temptations that come our way. And almsgiving and other acts of charity towards those most in need help us remember that while, like baseball, the practice of our faith involves lots of individual battles, ultimately we are part of a team, forming one Body in Christ. This year Lent and Spring Training not only begin on the same day, they also end on the same day. Baseball s Opening Day is March 29th which also happens to be Holy Thursday, the beginning of the Sacred Triduum which ends Lent and begins our celebration of our Lord s Passion, Death and Resurrection. And just as baseball players hope that their hard work in Spring Training will bring them closer to their goal of a World Series victory, we pray that our Lenten observance will bring us closer to our goal of sharing Christ s other worldly victory in heaven. For info: Kathy: or Maria: Lenten Regulations: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection.

5 The beginning of Lent is a time for us to prepare for the long road ahead to Easter. Thankfully the weather has not been bad and we hope this will continue! We are looking forward to our February break. When we return, we will have a long stretch until Easter break. Our second trimester ends in mid-march. Office of Faith Formation Office Hours: Monday: 1 PM 5 PM Wednesday & Thursday: 9 AM 2PM religiouseducation1@verizon.net CHILD LURES One of the requirements from the diocesan office is that we provide a safe and secure environment for all the children in our program. We at St. Mark are committed to providing such an environment, but, we all need to be aware of unsafe and insecure situations our children encounter in their daily lives. Therefore, the Catholic Bishop Conference of the United States has provided us with a program which is called Child Lures. It is mandated by our diocesan office that we implement this program in every parish school and religious education program. This can only be successfully completed if you, as parents, cooperate in this endeavor. Upcoming presentations have been scheduled for the Religious Education program during the month of February. All parents and guardians of children in our program are invited to attend. Letters to the parents are being distributed to the children with the upcoming dates. Please check your child s folder. LENT: a time for new life to appear within us as well as around us. Lent is a season when springtime s rebirth in nature should reflect the growth taking place within us. New attitudes and fresh ways of looking at things are born; old attitudes and unhealthy habits disappear. The dying and rebirth that takes place within our hearts reflect the great mystery of both the death and resurrection of our Lord.
