3 Pastor s Column December 22 23, 2018 Over the river and through the woods Over the river and through the wood to grandfather s house we go. The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh through the white and drifted snow. These words were originally published in the poem The New England Boy's Song about Thanksgiving Day by Lydia Marie Child in That poem was eventually set to a tune by an unknown composer. The song version switched grandfather to grandmother and was recorded as A Merry Christmas at Grandmother's by Danny Kaye and the Andrews Sisters in From the very beginning, travel has always played a big part in the story of Christmas. Our Gospel reading for the Fourth Sunday of Advent tells the story of the Visitation, when just after having been told by the Gabriel that she was to become the Mother of God, St. Luke tells us: Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. St. Luke makes it sound like Mary slipped out the front door, opened the gate, turned right, took a walk beside a park for a block or two, and showed up on her cousin Elizabeth s doorstep; nothing more than a stroll. But it was a 90 mile walk from Nazareth to Ein Karem, John the Baptist s traditional birthplace about 5 miles southwest of Jerusalem. Mary travels alone, Luke implies, although most likely as part of a caravan. She was newly pregnant (think morning sickness), and the hill country is the Judean mountains, so her journey would have been no walk in the park. When Elizabeth heard Mary s greeting she was filled with the Holy Spirit and said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb (John the Baptist) leaped for joy. But that is what Mary always does bring us to Jesus and bring Jesus to us. Mary stayed with her cousin for about 3 months before returning home to Joseph in Nazareth. Roughly six months later, Mary made a very similar trip to the mountains south of Jerusalem again, this time with Joseph to Bethlehem. In our Christmas Midnight Mass Gospel St. Luke writes: Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her first-born son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Assuming an average pace of 2.5 mph, 20 miles a day, would mean a trip of four 8-hour days. Some speculation puts it at seven days, or ten. Mary was in her late teens, strong, healthy peasant stock; even pregnant and near delivery she could have managed walking it. Images usually depict Mary seated on a donkey, but a donkey would have slowed them down. Even if they did have a donkey, Mary likely walked a good part of that 80 mile journey as donkeys aren t fit for riding long distances. The Christmas Mass at Dawn Gospel has the shepherds traveling after hearing the message of the angels. Let us go, then, to Bethlehem to see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us. So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. And then there are the Magi from the East (probably Persia) in our Epiphany Gospel who would have traveled some 800 miles or more to find the Christ child. Like Kate McCallister s frantic travels to get back to her son Kevin who is home alone at Christmas, many go to great lengths to be with family and friends. But our most important homecoming is to come home to Christ here in church. Have a Merry and Blessed Christmas! -- Fr. Bob
