January 21, 2018 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Sometimes God calls us out of the patterns of our day to day existence to take on something new. Though we hesitate because we are content with life as it is, the call to new life must not be ignored. 3 Pastor s Column January 20-21, 2018 "Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men." Everyone who attended Mass at St. Mark last weekend heard Father Sergiy s vocation story. In this weekend s Gospel, St. Mark tells us the vocation stories of two sets of brothers, Simon, later to be known as Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James and his brother John. If you recall, in last weekend s Gospel John the Baptist pointed out Jesus to Andrew and John saying, Behold, the Lamb of God. They followed after Jesus and spent the day with Him. Andrew was so excited he immediately went and found his brother and told him, We have found the Messiah, and he brought him to Jesus. So the encounter described by St. Mark as Jesus passed by the Sea of Galilee where Simon and Andrew were casting their nets into the sea and said to them, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men might not be quite as stark and abrupt as it sounds; nevertheless, it is remarkable that they immediately abandoned their nets and followed Him. And the same goes for James and John who were in a boat mending their nets when Jesus called them. They even left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed Jesus. The call of Jesus to his first disciples has a number of important messages for us. First, we should notice who they were. Peter and Andrew, James and John were simple fishermen, a very common occupation for those who lived by the Sea of Galilee. They did not come from the schools and colleges, they were not drawn from the religious elite or aristocracy; they were neither learned nor wealthy. They were fishermen; that is to say, ordinary people. No one ever believed in ordinary people as much as Jesus did. Second, we should notice what these men were doing when Jesus called them. They were doing their day s work, catching fish and mending their nets. Jesus came to them and called to them in the ordinary course of their day. The call of God comes to us not only in church or sacred places or secret places, but most often in the ordinary course of our everyday lives. Jesus meets us where we are and how we are, and then Jesus transforms us and gives us what we need to perform the task he has in mind for us. Third, we should notice how Jesus called them. Jesus invited Peter and Andrew, James and John to simply follow Him. Come after me. Jesus did not say to them, I have a theological system I would like you to investigate. He did not say, I have some new ethical and moral way of life that I want to discuss with you and teach to you. Jesus call is personal. It all begins with a personal reaction to and relationship with the person Jesus Christ. Following Jesus is like falling in love. It has been said that we admire people for reasons, but we love them without reasons. We follow Jesus not just because of what He says and does, but above all because of who He is. Lastly, we should notice what Jesus offered them. He offered them a task. I will make you fishers of men. He called them not to a life of comfort and ease, but rather to a life of service. Jesus called Peter and Andrew, James and John to a task wherein their reward would be realized in giving themselves totally to Him by putting themselves at the service of others. He called them to be heroes. And He continues to call young men and women to be heroes in our world today by serving His Church in the Priesthood, Diaconate, and Consecrated Life. Pray that during this Year for Vocations they might respond generously and courageously. Fr. Bob

Upcoming Events Altar Servers Training Schedule Sunday, Jan 21: 1:30 to 3 Friday, Jan 26: 4:30 to 6 Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion. As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms. The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a throwaway culture. However, we have great trust in God s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. It is designed for adults who, after hearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ proclaimed, freely desire to seek the living God and enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. The journey is one of conversion, preparation and formation which at the proper time leads towards reception of the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) that are received at the Easter Vigil. Perhaps, you are already baptized as a Catholic or received a valid baptism from another Christian denomination (Lutheran, Methodist, Episcopalian, Anglican, Presbyterian or Orthodox) and are seeking to prepare to make a profession of faith and full communion with the Roman Catholic Church.
