3 Pastor s Column June 17 18, 2017 Corpus Christi The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ A few days ago, a former seminarian classmate of mine at the North American College in Rome posted a memory on Facebook. It was a picture from ten years ago of the two of us in cassock and surplice walking side by side in the great Eucharistic Procession of Orvieto. Orvieto is about an hour s journey on the main train line between Rome and Florence. The site of the city is among the most dramatic in Europe, rising above the almost vertical faces of the cliffs that are completed by defensive walls built of the same volcanic stone. Orvieto is known for its fine white wine as well as for its magnificent cathedral whose façade is covered in golden mosaics, with a large rose window and three huge sculptured bronze doors. The Cathedral was constructed under the orders of Pope Urban IV to provide a suitable home for the Corporal of Bolsena, the result of a miracle which occurred in the year 1263 in that nearby town. That miracle provided the impetus for the great feast we celebrate this weekend, Corpus Christi, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. A German priest, Peter of Prague, stopped at Bolsena while on a pilgrimage to Rome. While celebrating Mass, Father Peter had barely spoken the words of consecration when blood started to seep from the Eucharist and trickle over his hands onto the corporal, the linen cloth upon which the gifts of bread and wine are transformed into Christ s Body and Blood. At first he attempted to hide the blood, but it became so noticeable that he interrupted the Mass and asked to be taken to Orvieto where Pope Urban IV was then residing. After listening to the priest s account, the pope sent emissaries to Bolsena for an immediate investigation. When all the facts were ascertained, Pope Urban IV ordered the host and corporal bearing the stains of blood to be brought to Orvieto. With Cardinals, Archbishops and other dignitaries in attendance, the Pope met the procession and, amid great pomp, had the relics placed in the Cathedral. The Pope then commissioned St. Thomas Aquinas to compose a Mass, and a year later the Pope issued a papal bull instituting the feast of Corpus Christi. The linen corporal bearing the spots of blood is still reverently enshrined and exhibited in the Cathedral of Orvieto, and every year on this feast it is carried in procession throughout the city. And as great as the experience of participating in that Eucharistic procession was, it pales in comparison to what I experience whenever I say the words of consecration, and by the power of the Holy Spirit bread and wine on this altar become the Most Holy Body and Blood of Our Lord. Every time we gather together to celebrate Mass we witness a miracle as our gifts of bread and wine are transformed into Christ s Body and Blood. No mere symbol, not just a remembrance, our belief in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist is something which sets us apart from most of our Christian brethren. That is why we must receive the Eucharist so reverently, reserve it in the tabernacle so securely, and purify the vessels which hold our Lord s Body and Blood so carefully. If you re going to receive in the hand, the best way is to put one hand down and put the other hand on top of it and make, as Tertullian used to say, a kind of throne for the Lord. When the Eucharist is placed on your hand say "Amen," telling the world you believe it truly is the Body and Blood of Christ, then immediately consume it before returning to your place. If you are going to receive on the tongue, hold your head erect and slightly tilted back, open your mouth and place your tongue over your bottom teeth. And if you choose to kneel for Communion, and it s all right to kneel, it s your right to kneel, remember that when you rise to be careful of the people behind you. Act like you are receiving a miracle, because you are. -Fr. Bob
